National Honor Society Zvwlewla dl March l5, l958, marked a big day for 96 juniors and seniors who were tapped at as- sembly to be the first members of Howe's chapter of the National Honor Society. Pur- poses of the society are to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to serve others and to develop character and leader- ship. Fifteen per cent of the senior class and ten per cent of the junior were nominated on the basis of these purposes. Mr. Robert Turner was named as the society's sponsor. At the March Z7 formal induction, Mr. A. R. Mahin, sponsor of the Broad Ripple Chap- ter, welcomed the Howe Chapter and Miss Margaret Coombs, co-sponsor, gave a brief history of the National Honor Society. Howe candidates were led in the society pledge by Charles Taylor, president of the Ripple chap- ter. Other Ripple members participating in the ceremony were Judy Heavenridge, John Sims, John Kingdon, and Marilyn Weil. By in- stalling Howe's chapter Ripple observed its own chapter's 2Oth anniversary.
