Although the Federalists had strong can- didates and good campaign promises, the Nationalists seemed to suit the voters better for they made a clean sweep of the election. This award, presented by the Irvington post, is given to the outstanding junior girl and boy for citizenship, scholarship, and leader- ship. The junior class and the faculty choose the recipients of the award. Their names are engraved on a plaque which hangs in the main hall. It has been a tradi- tion that the two welcome the incoming freshmen of the following fall semester. Each year the local Irvington chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presents an award to Howe's outstanding senior girl. On the basis of scholarship, citizenship, and leadership, Susan Stirling was chosen by the senior class and the fac- ulty to receive this award. The seniors also selected Susan as Howe's representative to visit the UN in October along with representatives of the other city high schools. Susan spent several days in New York watching the UN in action. On her return, she spoke to the student body over the PA system, telling of her ex- periences. FK ,E7 Page eleven
