I call this 1953 Nationalist conven- tion to order! Dele- gates to the National- ist convention listen attentively to the campaign platform of their party read by Jim Billingsley. Mock election teaches I promise bubble gum machines in all classrooms if I'm elected g Vote for me and I'll have cokes installed in the water foun- tains. These were just a few of the many campaign promises one could hear at the political conventions held early in November. All loyal members of the two opposing par- ties listened to such promises and speeches as they chose their parties' candidates for the mock election. John Bowden and Bill Walton were candi- dates for the offices of Governor and Lieu- tenant Governor from the Federalist party. These lasses are working hard on their projects, hop- ing they will be good enough for exhibition in the alcove show cases, or for entrance in one of the many contests open to art students. Oh my aching ballot, replies Ginny Stuck to the news of Sue Stow. Winners of the mock election gather here to discuss their recent victory. The girls must be talk- ing woman-talk for Phil Steckley, Jay Frank- lin, John Schutt, Lonnie Tillery, Bill Walton, and Dick Ponti Cleft to rightl don't look very interested in their conversation. ag: 'L government by doing Lonnie Tillery and Jim Billingsley. Candi- dates for lesser offices were also chosen at this time, and as soon as the conventions were over, the election procedures and cam- paigns got underway at full speed. The annual mock election is an outstand- ing event at Howe as it brings with it not only a better knowledge of our government but many exciting, fun-filled days. Noisy campaigners in the halls, colorful posters decorating the cafeteria and classrooms brought Howeites to the peak of excitement Hey! How do you get out of this thing? A freshman voter puzzles over the complex voting machine, wondering which lever he should pull for his favored candidates. as election day drew nearer. Then the day came and passedg the polls closed and excited office-seekers quieted down to await the re- sults of the balloting. For the first time in Howe's history a split was registered when Nationalist Lonnie Til- lery and Federalist Bill Walton were elected governor and lieutenant governor, respec- tively. Remaining state oiiices were also equally divided between Federalists and Nationalists. Put up your dukes and fight like men!
