Proving powerful both on offense and defense, our Hornets fielded one of the best teams ever to play for Howe. Led by Leroy Thompson, who scored 105 points and was city-county champ in scoring Csetting a new school recordjg the pass combination of Ronnie Fox to Bob Schrier, which accounted for sb: touchdownsg and the brilliant defensive work of Tom Bruce, Bill Moore. Norman Mohr, and Bill Larsh, our Hornets rolled through the 1952 season losing only to Tech and XVarren Central. Tech scored two touchdowns in the opening minutes which proved to be the downfall of our Hornets. Howe completely outclassed Southpo1't's Cardinals to post their initial win of the season. Howe started a six-game winning streak with this victory. The victims included Manual, Broad Rip- ple, Attucks, Anderson, and Ben Davis. In the Anderson game, Dick VVood, a senior guard, in- jured his knee and was lost to the Hornets for the rest of the season. VVarren struck for two touch- downs in the last half to come from behind and pin a 25-18 defeat on our Hornets. Thompson, the city scoring champ, and Jack Shirey, the county scoring champ, each scored two touchdowns. In the final game of the season. Howe downed a weak VVashington team by the score of 26-0. Bob Pirtle and Bmce both scored their first touchdowns of the long season. At the annual athletic banquet, Thompson was voted the team's most valuable player. Ronnie Cooper, who did the punting during the season, was selected captain. Wood won the Kiwanis award for the best mental attitude. Thompson and Cooper won berths on the all-city football team. TOP-Armand Roach brings down a Manual player. Ronnie Cooper C143 is coming in fast. CENTER-Leroy Thompson HSD cuts through the line. Don Rees C 125 prepares to throw a block.
