Who is seen at basketball games, the Pleas- ant Run Revue, the music festival, and most of the activities here at Howe involving tickets and general managing? It could be none other than Mr. Paul Klinge's business managers. These hard working boys see that everything runs smoothly. Their duties are many, but they always seem to get them accom- plished. Pictured at the left go- ing over the day's receipts are Dick Miller, Jack Callon, Bob Luke, Jim Bowman, Roderick Macy, and Jim Hollenbeck. in 7957 7 honor and glory In 1951 Violet Queen Judy Spring- er reigned over the annual May Pageant of Achieve- ment which portrays the achievements of the year at Howe and marks the school's birthday. Federalist candidate Dick Miller became Governor of Howe State by defeating the Nationalist's candidate Ralph Johnson. At top left Ralph congratulates Gov- ernor Miller . Rival party members wish each other luck on Election Day at the polls in the picture at top right. An unusual scene in any convention, but it's only the beginning. All is quiet for now but wait until later. Then the speeches will begin. As is the custom, the rules, platform, and cre- dentials committees make their reports to the convention. At the lower left the rules com- mittee report is being given. During the confusion of the convention, the tabulators keep a record of the votes cast. The picture at the lower right illustrates the conven- tion in full swing. Jo Ann Meyer was crowned Hi-Y Sweetheart on February 9 at the Sweetheart dance. She is pictured above with her court. Miss Brooks and Hugo spend a great deal of time arguing with each other. Then Miss Brooks discovers that to arouse Hugo's interest, she should become interested in his hobby, sailing. She does, with hilarious results. At the same time she is directing the school play, Lost Hor- izon. Despite interterence from the principal, Mr. Wadsworth, a rival teacher, Miss Audubon, and Mrs. Allen, a member of the school board, Lost Horizon is a success, and everything turns out all right. The freshmen find out, on the first day of school that they don't need the bookstore tickets the upperclassmen sold them. lt's still first come, first served in the line for school supplies. Intramural Sports Have Good Year Howe's intramural sports program is rapidly develop- ing into a well rounded, semester-round activity. The program has grown so that it now includes football, bas- ketball, softball, badminton, volley ball, bowling, track, and baseball. Any boy who is not on any of the school athletic teams may participate in this program. Mr. Lyman Combs is head of the program and does a very capable job in handling the various activities. Boys may organize their own teams and then submit the name of the team to Mr. Combs who will enter their team for league com- petition. Everything is in fun, and this is demonstrated clearly in the names of the teams, which include such monickers as Hot Shots, Fancy Pants, lrish. The basketball leagues, perhaps, are the most popu- lar since their seasons are the longest. All winter the gym was used on Monday and Thursday nights as the boys went after the league championship. There are two leagues. One is for the freshman and sophomore boys, and the other for junior and senior boys. The members of the team which wins the league champion- ship receive medals designating the sport in which they won them. These medals are of the keychain variety and may be displayed easily. A lot of congratulations should be given Mr. Combs because he has developed the intramural program into a worthwhile and entertaining asset of our school. Icontinued on page 931 Here is a typical intramural scramble for the ball under the basket. lt looks like it might be Bob Henninger tipping the ball, but we're not sure. UPPER LEFT: In a league game encounter Bob Henninger is shown tiring a shot at the basket while Bob Kouns and Ward Powell eagerly await the rebound, if any. UPPER RtGHT: This picture really shows the spirit of the intramural games. Everyone was so interested in getting the ball that he didn't care to smile for the birdie. 57 rl 'F' M'f9 ' W ,,...,-H 'm A5 f wffvk' M Vg.. Off On The Right Foot Service, loyalty, trienolship-these ideas express the purpose of the freshmen girls' club, Selotra. Club colors are represented by 'those that most people call to mind when they think ot a freshman-green and light green. Activities for the year included a talk on good grooming by the head of CI beauty college, a Hallowe'en Party, a style show given by the members, a Welcome Party tor January fresh- men, and other activities that the four girls' clubs participated in together. Officers of this club were: Carole Pryor, president, Nancy Endicott, vice-president, Helen Houser, secretary, and Marilyn Hughes, treasurer. This year's sponsor was Miss Ellen O'Drain. Oh, To Be A Sophomore Again! LaNina, the sophomore girls' club, under the sponsorship of Miss Jerry Motley, was very busy this year. They took part in the fall Welcome Party, the Christmas Party, and the Competitive Sing, which, this year, was combined with the Mother's Day Tea, and took the place of stunt day. These activities were done in cooperation with the other three girls' clubs. Among their own individual activities there was a Valentine Party. At one meeting, Miss Shirley Diehl, from the Physical Education Department, demonstrated some new dance steps to the members. Club colors are really prettier than they sound-red and light pink. Officers this year were: Alice Ray, president, Eleanor Van- Dyke, vice-president, Jeanette Wills, secretary, Carol Carmichael, treasurer. - .. l. l fq 4' A sri S J .Ox I if ii' ' . id f I-23 ToP PICTURE l BACK Row-wyand, Leel Henderson, Harrison, Sheets, N Kee, Eddy, Bergen, Founta' McMillan, Anderson. ' 1 r 1 1 Junior Queens Howe's violets were a very active bunch this year. They par- ticipated in a number of activities. Among these, the most well known is that of choosing the candidates for Violet Queen. Every year the Queen of Violets comes to Violet Hill to see the progress made by Howe students. It is this club's honor to have one of its members chosen Violet Queen. Other activities of the club were a joint meeting with the Hi-Y for a discussion on dating problems, a fashion talk by a repre- sentative trom a local department store, and a iitterbug contest. Club colors are symbolic of royalty-violet and deep purple. Olticers who served the club this year were: Nyna Morton, president, Angie Evans, vice-president, Cathie Mosiman, secre- tary, Cynthia Hatfield, treasurer. Mrs. Ruth Reed was the club sponsor this year. l ' ' ' . - - in Big Women on Campus When girls at Howe reach their final year of school, they are eligible to belong to Hosegi, the senior girls' club. Club colors are navy and light blue. Hosegi members are so busy with studying CTU and other senior activities, that they meet only during the tall semester. These girls decorate for the football and cross country ban- quet,.and participate in the activities with the three other girls' clubs. Of special interest to Hosegi members are college guid- ance and vocational speakers. Interesting lectures are given on sororities, also. AND THE BAND PLAYS ON What a thrilling sight it was to see the Howe Band, under the able direction of Mr. Robert Burford, come marching down the field at football games last fall. It was equally thrilling to sit spellbound while the band entertained with its exciting interpretations of concert selections. This year, the band has been raising money towards the purchase of new uniforms. The money received from the annual Band Festival, held this year on March 2, went to further this cause. Also at the Festival, a Mr. and Miss Music were chosen. Warren Roth and Beverly Weevie were elected to receive the titles. Other candidates were Larry Phillips, Bob Bron- strup, Ronnie Joyce, Alice Ray, Mary Bergen, and Charlotte Owens. The orchestra this year was especially well-trained, and again it had the distinction of being one of the top high school orchestras in the state. It has performed for the senior play, the Footlight Revelers' play, and assembly programs. In addition the orchestra presented its own concert on December I. Paul Jump was featured as piano soloist on this program. He played the first movement of Beethoven's Concerto in C. Also on the program were vocalists Larry Phillips and Beverly Weevie. Wat- kins, did its customary good work ot selling Howe to the public. By singing at various programs in and outside of school, the choir has made itself known not only to Howe patrons and students, but also to the whole city and state. Among the many performances given by the choir this past year were ap- pearances at the Monument Circle at Christmas, Downey Avenue Chris- tian Church, Brightwood Methodist Church, and Howe's Community Christmas program. Besides ap- 70 pearing at assemblies honoring speakers and special events, the choir has given assemblies of its own. May 4 was the date ot the Vocal Music Festival. At this time the choir, assisted by the various glee clubs, gave a varied program of classical, semi-classical, and popu- lar music. Among selections tea- tured were Showboat Medley, The Holy Ci1y, and a dramatized version of Little Red Riding Hood. Phill Stevens served as accompa- nist this year. If the girls' octet with their director, Mr. Frank Watkins, seem a wee bit smug, it's be- cause they've had a wonderful year, high- lighted by singing at the governor's mansion. Their theme song is When You're SmiIing. Close running with the octet are the Choralaires, a newly organized group of advanced girls' glee club members, also di- rected by Mr. Watkins. These girls are doing a wonderful iob and made their first radio appearance on February 'l8. The string quartets are directed by Miss Alberta Denk. HORNETS FINISH The veteran-laden gridsters of Howe pooled their talents cmd, under the crafty guidance of Coach Sam Kelley, produced one of the most successful gridiron seasons our school has had. Some of the boys had won varsity letters as early as their sophomore year, so experience undoubtedly was a helpful asset. The scor- ing parade was led once again by our swivel-hipped halfback Leo Ahearn. This was the third consecutive year in which Leo took scoring honors. The Hornets also placed two men on the all-city teams picked by the newspapers of lndianapolis. These two were quarter- back Frank Fox, and end Ed Dwyer. Other three-year men were Mac Laetsch, who filled a slot on the line, Earl Lewis, a halfback, and Dick deLanglade, who was chosen by his teammates at the end of the season as honorary captain. Now for a brief review of the season. In their season debut the Hornets journeyed up to the home of the Logansport Berries and came home with a 'I9-7 victory attached to their belts. This was the first time Howe had ever played Logansport in any kind of athletic contest. Next for Howe was the annual battle with neighboring arch-rival, Technical. This was a closely matched contest, marked by fumbles on the part of both teams. The Hornets took the lead, 2-0, when end Bob Mogle tackled a Tech ball-carrier behind the goal-line 80 THIRD IN CITY -or a safety. The lead was held for about two quarters until, in the last minutes of the game, a Greenclad talunged over for a touchdown and Tech won the game, '-2. Steamed up by their loss to Tech, the Kelley-men 'ten rolled over Southport. Cardinals, 32-13. Leo xhearn was the scoring feature of the evening as he on wild through the Southport defense for four touch- lowns. Manual's Redskins then tried to halt the Hornets tut proved no match for the high-scoring Irvington 1achine, losing by a 31-12 score. The next game was the one everyone wanted des- terately to win. No Howe eleven had ever defeated a road Ripple team and the Hornets wanted to break the nx. The Rockets bottled up Ahearn but Frank Fox got CENTERS KNEELING-Snider, Moore, Coach Pierson. Howe finished the seasor by downing Crispus Attucks at the C. Y. O. field, T3-O. The Hornets ended the season with the envia- ble record of 8 wins against 2 losses. Ed Dwyer was chosen by his teammates as the most valuable player and Grant McBroom was se- lected as the player having the best mental attitude. RESERVE FOOTBALL Following the pattern set by the varsity squad, the reserve team also had a very succesful season. Sev- eral of the boys who played on the reserves dressed or saw action in a few varsity games, thus partly accounting for the high caliber of football displayed by the two teams. In seven games the reserves were only beaten once, that defeat coming at the hands of Southport. The reserves scored 119 points, opposition, 18. Three of these victories came in the Indianapolis sectionals when the Hornets defeated Beech Grove, Manual, and Southport. Their last defeat was handed the Hornets by Crispus Attucks in the final game of the sectionals. In the opening game of the 1950-51 season, Howe lost to Tech. The following week, however, saw a much improved Hornet team rally in the fourth period to defeat the Washington Conti- nentals. Coach Yeager's squad next played host to Franklin, winning by 15 points. Kenny Wood led the scoring with 13 points. The Hornet sting then struck down the Ben Davis Giants. Wilbur Zobbe led the team with 13 points, while Fahrbach and Wood contributed 9 each. In a four team invitational tourney in December, Howe, sparked by Fahrbach's scoring abilities, won a 67-53 victory over Broad Ripple, only to be defeated by the Green Wave again, in the second game. Crispus Attucks, the Hornets' next victim, saw their winning streak broken by good Howe teamwork and excellent strategy on the part of Coach Yeager. Fahrbach with 16 points and Wood with 14 were high scorers for the game. Wabash gave the Brown and Gold a setback at Wabash, but Howe came home the next day to defeat Connersville by 4 points. Colum- bus then caused another loss, shading the Hornets by 2 points. McMullen C511 goes way up in the air for a shot against Ripple. Fahrbach C52i charges in for the rebound. Howe's track team had a very successful 1950 season, climaxed by an upset victory over Tech in the City Track Meet. The first meet, indoors, was held with Broad Ripple. Howe, being in very good con- dition after a long, hard practice, beat Ripple by more than 40 points. K Howe then downed Crispus Attucks by more than 60 points. Jack Wellman scored in the mile run. Ernie Phelps and Don Franz placed first and second, respectively, in the high hurdles. The Warren Central Warriors met the Hornets on the Howe track. Warren had a good team, but not good enough. They were downed by more than 60 points. In the Hoosier High School Relays, with 17 other schools participating, Howe took third place. Shortridge and Jefferson of Lafayette ran against Howe in a three-way meet here. Howe triumphed over Shortridge by a 48 point margin, with Jeffer- son placing third. The meet began with the crown- ing of the Track Queen, Janet Graves. When the City Track Meet rolled around, every- one thought Tech would win. But the Hornets had diFferent plans, and proved their ability by knocking the defending champs, Tech, into second place. 88 VARSITY TRACK TEAM BACK ROW-Merchent, DeWitte, Bolmer, Koons, D. HORNETS HUSTLE THROUGH THIRD SEASON Howe's third baseball season had two strikes on it before the season started, in, that it was riddled by graduation the year before. We lost the boys who had been mainstays the two preceding seasons, and Coach Roscoe Pierson had to build the team around 5 returning lettermen: captain Wayne Engleman, Loren Potter, -Jack Young, Farrell Patrick, and Louis Faenzi. The hustling Hornets started their season by losing 3 in a row, to Shortriclge 7-4, Washington 8-I, and to Cathedral I4-0. Howe then won its first game by downing Manual 5-2. Crispus Attucks had to come from behind to win, 7-5, before Franklin Township ran over the Hornets, i4-8. Shortridge did better in their second game against the Hornets than they did in their first, punishing the Irvington diamond men by a 22-8 score. Broad Ripple's veteran pitcher Forrest Reehling threw a 2-hitter at the Hornets in the next game, to Rockets win- ning, 7-I.
