A surprise ending was in store at H320 College Avenue for everyone who at- tended the Senior Play this year. Held in suspense for three acts, the audience was then informed that the characters were presenting a play within a play, and that nobody had been murdered. Many hours of study and rehearsal went into the production of H320 College Ave- nue, but the finished product was Well worth the efforts of the entire cast. The Senior Class is proud of the principal play- ers, supporting cast, prompters, stage- hands, house management, make-up, and all other committees that aided in making Howe's tenth year Senior Play a huge suc- cess. Three performances were given on Ian- uary 13, 14, and 15. The play, written by Fred Ballard and Mignon G. Eberhart, was directed by Mr. Darrell Gooch. This was Howe's fifth year of grid- iron competition and was undoubtedly the most im- pressive season. Howe started its campaign with a hard fought victory over the Greenclads of Tech. The home team outscored the Hornets in the first half, 14-6, capitalizing on a Howe fumble to score their first touchdown in the first period. Late in the second quarter the Greenclads hit pay dirt again, but a touchdown pass from lohn Edwards to Tim Stutz tallied six points for the Brown and Gold. Howe came back in the second half with a pass to Stutz and an end run by Bob Wood, both good for touchdowns. At the final gun Howe stood ahead by a 19-14 margin. ln the Hornets' second game, Wood scored three markers, and Edwards one, to defeat the Frankfort Hot Dogs, 28-O. After Howe kicked off, 1ay Gould nailed a Frankfort kicker behind the goal line and Howe went into a 2-O lead. Those who have joined the select group of let- ter wearers are members of the Lettermen's Club. Boys from all varsity teams are listed on the club's roster. Each year in cooperation with the G.A.A., the Lettermen's Club sponsors the Winter Won- derland Dance shortly before Christmas. The feature attraction of this year's dance was the floorshow presented by the Lettermen's corps de ballet . FIGHT! TEAM! FIGHT! The cheering spirit at Howe football and bas- ketball games is partly due to the enthusiasm of our cheerleaders. All are members of the Cheerleaders' Club which trains and prepares them for cheering at the athletic events. Fresh- man, sophornore, and junior members lead the yells at freshman and reserve games: and the senior club members direct the cheers at varsity games. This year the club purchased new uniforms of brown slacks and gold blouses for the varsity cheerleaders. Under the sponsorship of Miss lean Westphal, the members learn poise and good sportsmanship. The Cheerleaders' Club is pictured on the second following page and the varsity cheer- leaders are shown above. G. A. A. BUBFOBDS BEST 'l'he steady marching rhythm oi music is a tamiliar welcome sound to l-loweites' ears as they till the seats and bleachers tor all-school assemblies throughout the year. The Howe Band is the source ot this music and playing tor assemblies is only one of their activities. Under the very able direction ot Mr. Bobert Burtord, it has greatly improved from year to year. This year the band is at its best with titty-tive members who have been very busy all year playing tor various programs. Some of their activities this year were the May Pageant aiiit the Armistice Day Parade. Special projects were playing at Billings Hospital and the Veter- ans' Hospital and their Evening ot Music. Of course they are a familiar sight to our football fans as they march for all home games. Led by the drum majorettes, Barbara May, Doi- ice Smith, Marcella Bosebrock, loan Stevenson, Dorothy Mosiman, and loan Mclviatli, the band makes an impressive appearance marching down the field in their Brown and Gold uni- forms. Members of the B band are used to till vav cancies in the A band, and in this way the high quality ol the band is maintained. w Q 'F J Q ' , L at ..., Jam, ? igfgz ,Fw Xu e , f Hffew ' ', , T 4' -J' - E 1 4 W: D 0 11 Q Q' , e x .. STANDING-'Charles Bronstrup, Ross Gooch, Alice SHEPARDS The ,orchestra has become outstanding in the music department. Directed by Mr. Iohn Shep- ard, they have provided pleasant music for school activities time and again. Playing for the Senior Class Play, the oper- ettas, Footlight Revelers' plays, and assemblies are only a few of the orchestra's activities. They share honors with the choir and glee clubs at the annual Music Festival in the spring. The organization is also a very important part of the vespers services at the close of the school year. The playing of Pomp and Circumstancen is familiar music to every graduating Howeite. The All-City Orchestra Festival, the most im- portant project of the orchestra, was held this year at Caleb Mills Hall on April 25. Each city school had an orchestra present. Beginning with the smallest school orchestra, and ending with Hatcher, Patricia Christenberry, Frances Matthews, Beverly Hendrickson, Marilyn Waltz, Ruth Barr, Mary Miller, loyve Mitzner, Sue Hodgin, Mr, Iohn W. Shepard, Robert Craig, Dana Crapo, Homer Pence, Kent Pierce, Richard Keppler, Richard Smith, Walter Black, Donn Mills, Claude Rinehart, Kathryn Porter, Mildred Bailey. SYMPHONISTS the largest, each group had approximately twenty minutes in which to perform. The Howe orchestra numbers were: a selection from Tann- hauser by Richard Wagner, and a special ar- rangement of the first movement of the Haydn Concerto in D Major, with Barbara Weesner as the piano soloist. The purpose of this festival is not for grading or criticism, but for the enjoyment of all city high school orchestra members. This year, as in the past, the Howe orchestra performed very well. Awards for service rendered to the music de- partment are presented to orchestra members for six or more semesters of participation. ln addition to his duties as director of the orchestra, Mr. Shepard also instructs beginning and intermediate classes in strings. an Situ, Q ...Q sift, N 1 C ml! 4-5: f YV .Vu 6 M.
