We i322 l-loweites have in the l-IILLTOPPEB a memory bookhot this year at Howe, bringing back to us the tremulous thrill ot our formal dances, the fun oi after-school activities, our exhilarating excitement at basketball games, or the glow ot pleasure we felt when enjoying our theatrical performances. This l-HLLTOPPER is a review of the past to keep for the future. N ,:3!' T: vw 225' if-San 4 T. ,:L M QQ' -J. . 'Q 'ZITI gi ESEQ XSS: 22552: EQ 'Ein- . Fu. Halls once more were lortqhtened by new fads and joe lanquaqe, which only We could understand. Cur principal, Mr. Charles Macliay Sharp Cleitl, ably assisted by Mr. Clarence R. Clayton, the deans, and the oitice force, competently handles the business affairs oi the school. His quiet humor and understandinq nature have made him a friend to teachers and pupils alike throughout his nine years at Howe. Academically our education is broadened by English, foreign languages, social studies, mathematics, and sciences. We ponder the question of Whether to sit or to set, to lay or to lie, and learn to parlez to the music oi amo, amas, amat, or hago, haces, hacef' Our future statesmen prepare for government in the Atomic Age, While those of us who are planning careers similar to Einstein's, wrestle with the problems of trig and solid geometry, and our scientists are initiated to the odors of hydrogen sulphide and formaldehyde. This valuable material is giving us a background of yesterday in preparation for tomorrow. ' ., Hz,-J' Our study of the fine arts not only provides us with a background for the future but also with many pleasant hours among the classics. The commercial artists prepare to outline the advertising campaigns of tomorrow, While our fashion editors of the next decade concoct even more faloulous fashions. lWe lf-loweites who have music included in our repertoire enjoy classes of music appreciation or the vocal and instrumental organizations. 'Through these fine arts We develop culture, as we learn to use our talents more skillfully. ,L W I X ik S SSH , b 1 an E S s 2 s S S E s E SE W., 1452 55 if HX, L LL :EE v 1 W .1 N x ' 3 522 JH, . Gut of its classes come the craftsmen of tomorrow, Workers in Wood, metal, and type. For those of us who Wish to enter the marts of trade, there are secretarial courses, typing, shorthand, and business. These studies develop a pride in accu- racy and neatness in our business men and Women of the future. Those of us who look forward to careers in homemaking find fascination inthe preparation of Well- balanced meals and in the art of sewing. ln these subjects, l-lowe is a training station for tomorrow. No one who attended l-Iowe in the fall of l946 will have forgotten the loss of our beautiful trees and the piles oi logs that were the result of the splurge ot tree cutting. The trees had Phloen Necrosis-a disease-and in order to save the other beauties on the campus, the diseased had to be cut down. Now at the side of our gym door tt V . , we discover, not logs, but new trees. Although these trees are but saplings now, within the next generation they will have grown stately and strong, thus ably rep- resenting the war dead of Howe in whose honor they have been planted. K.--M ., HoWe's Don Coval and Franklirfs Ierry Crossman vie for the ball in the opening jump in the Howe-Franklin game. Two bits, tour bits, six bits, a dollar! -can be heard coming from the gym or gridiron at TCI-IHS almost any Friday or Saturday during the football, basketball, or track season. Enthusiastic spectators, and determined players maintain l-lowe's reputation oi good slflortsmanslfiip in Indianapolis sports circles. , THE FOOTBALL SEASON AT HOWE Only three returning lettermen, Iack Iohns, George Spradling, and lack O'Neel, journeyed to Frankfort, Indiana, with the rest of HoWe's grid team for the initial game in our fourth football season. The Hot Dog boys were met by a fighting-till-the-gun Howe eleven, and at the close of the game the score stood at the U to U mark. Howe fans groaned when a clipping penalty was called on the Hornets, after half- back Iohnny Edwards had completed a long pass to Roger Kennedy, end, who crossed to pay, dirt. Fullback lack Iohns led the Hornets' sting, when he scored two touchdowns in the third quarter in the Howe-Manual encounter on Sep- tember 27. Both attempts for conversion failed, and the Redskins were triumphant by a score of I3-12 in one of the most disappointing games of the season. Another tie, O to O, was the score of the Howe- Westfield game, though the Hornet footballers really outplayed the opposing eleven. West- field muffed an excellent chance when Ballard Clark of the Shamrocks couldn't hold on to the leather passed to him on Howe's three yard stripe. For the second year Howe bested badly the Giants of Ben Davis: this year found the scoreboard appearing 20-O for the Hornets at gun time. It happened first on the purple and white three yard line. A punt from the Giants was blocked by our gridsters, and Roger Ken- nedy fell on it in the end zone. VA golden toe, lim Stutz, converted for the extra point. ln the fourth quarter Dick Baker made a beautiful run with a Ben Davis punt to the Giants' eight, and lack Peaslee crossed for an- other touchdown on the very next play. Southport rooters donned their mourning clothes after Howe defeated the Cardinals' elev- en 7 to 6. An aerial attack forced the Southport team far into their own territory, and when the hosts punted, it was recovered by Howes' Ver- million who crossed to tie the score. Repeating many past performances, lim Stutz gave us that vital winning point. Falling for the first time against the Howe rough and ready forward wall were the Warren Central Warriors. Bob Woods scored first, and a pass was made from' Edwards RSITY FOOTBALL to Bill Locklear who made the goal untouched. Sacred Heart fell next in Howes' winning streak, but she was destined to be our team's last victory. ln the closing two games Howe lost to the Silent Hoosiers 7-O when veteran Frank Kaiser crossed for the only touchdown of the game, in the final game the Hornets couldn't swallow the bitter pill offered to them by the Ripple Rockets, and we were beaten 19 to U. Two T. D.'s each placed Roger Kennedy and lack Iohns in the high point men positions. lack O'Neel, center of the Howe team, was awarded the 400 Club's most valuable player award for 1945. On October 3 the reserve gridmen staged a 14-12 defeat over Broad Ripple. South Side Manual looked easy prey, a fact which proved to be true when the Howeites scored 13 points to the Redskins' O. Warren Central came next on the list to be mowed down, and this time a score of 26-6 Was recorded. On October 28 the Hornets, meeting the Southport Cardinals, carried home a decisive 12-U victory. Then the four game Winning streak that our reserves had built was broken by a 15-6 score in their last encounter with Wash- ington. Freshman football Coach Roscoe Pierson's footballers failed to Win but one encounter out of five in their' 1946 schedule. After a disappoint- ing season in which they met stronger, more balanced city teams, they ended their schedule on a more promising note by defeating the War- ren Central boys 12-O. ln their first goal battle with the Ripple Rockets, the Hornets found them- selves seven points short at the end of the game. Manual Was next to vanquish our Frosh 7-6, and then We faced a sturdy Southport eleven which overcame us 13-6. Our last contest was a crush- ing defeat of 19-O administered by the Continen- tals of Washington. Coach Yeager replaced Mr. Lewis Crilfoy, now serving on the Butler University faculty, who had coached a more than successful version of Howe basketball for six years. The '48-'47 squad faced teams which were rated among the very top in the state, and there- fore, the Hornets lost more encounters than they won C7 wins, 9 lossesl. For the first time in Howe's history it was found that all members of the team worked equally well together, and therefore Coach Yeager employed the entire team instead of the customary first five players. On November 30 the Hornets flew Technical High School's way to engage them in battle and Tech was subdued 36-33. At the half mark of Ll948-47 the game Howe led l9-9, though the Big Green rallied in the second half they were stopped by the united efforts of our cagers. The Hornets were definitely on the move as they vanquished the Washington Continentals 34-28 and the Bipple Rockets 43-32. Our team suffered its first loss at the hands of an accomplished Franklin team and its second the next evening to Ben Davis who edged us in the fourth quarter of the game. Greenfield fell easily when Howe put on the steam to blast their hopes 46-28. The Howe Holiday Tournament with Howe, Bedford, Ieffersonville, and Broad Bipple par- ticipating was held for the second consecutive year and our Hornets drew the tough Bedford Stonecutters which were rated as the state's third best team. We dropped this game by a 34-28 score but took the consolation game away from Broad Bipple to the tune of 46-4l. A low ebb of the season was reached on Ian- Elmer Summitt, Don Coval, and George Spradling watch Hugh Moreillon shoot for a foul. It is the Broad Ripple-Howe game in which Howe won 43-32. We righted an earlier wrong by defeating Lawrence Central 47-26, but'this was followed by another defeat by the hands of the strong Shortridge Blue-Devils fscore 33-305. Ansurpris- ing victory was gained over Bloomington on lanuary 31 followed by the maddening defeat that Cathedral waged over us with a 30-29 score. Perhaps the strongest team we faced and the most polished was Garfield of Terre Haute. They served us a crushing defeat of 65-30. Howe tired of this so they edged Southport 41-40. The sea- son ended in a slump when we lost our last three games to Shelbyville, Warren Central, and Manual, respectively. Led by our pepful cheerleaders Howe backed its 1947 sectional team to the utmost. The game was nip and tuck the entire four quarters. At the first quarter buzzer the score stood an even 13-13, but at the half the Warriors led the Hor- nets by a three-point margin C23-205. Hugh- Moreillon, George Spradling, and lohnny Ed- wards scored to place Howe ahead at different intervals in the last half. But when the deafen- ing crack of the final gun sounded Howe was trailing by one point. The Warren Central team had defeated us 36-35. It was a very crushing defeat for all Howeites, both team and students. The Howe Reserve team coached by Mr. Wathen Leasor won 12 encounters and lost 5. The team seemed and proved itself very well balanced. The Freshmen team lost its first five games but finally found its footing and won the last seven games scheduled in their season. The. team is coached by Mr. E. Franklin Fisher. RE SERVE A RESERVE BASKETBALL SCORES Howe 12 .............,.......................... Tech 21 Howe 27 ........ .......... Howe's spike team lost their coveted sectional crown to a strong Manual aggregation, but placed second in the contest with 20 2X3 points to Manual's 43 marks. Don Goodwin, Don Battery, Norman Dixon, and Dave DeWitte, who composed the speedy medley relay team, took first place in the lndian- apolis Relays held at the Tech oval. ln running the mile in this relay, DeWitte was clocked at 4:37.5 which lowered the previous medley time to ll:U6.l knocking l8 seconds off last year's time. Dual meets found the thinlies skipping the SONl946 traces to win three meets with Southport, Ben Davis, and Lawrence Central. ln a tri-team meet with Washington, and Gerstmeyer r of Terre Haute, Howe took second berth, and the remain- ing six dual meets were lost to stronger city competition. May 6, and the city meet rolled around once again. Although DeWitte placed second in the mile event and Dixon took fourth in the 880 yard contest, the team garnered only lO points while Tech bagged a grand total of 64 l X3 to win first place. Seventy-seven points placed Dave DeWitte's name in first position for the '46 season's high point man, and Norman Dixon followed hot on his heels with 72. Dave also secured the Dyer award for the best mental attitude of the year and he shared the captainship of the team with Bob O'Neel. The most valuable player award was presented to Norman Dixon. Manual, Broad Ripple, Warren Central, Crispus Attucks, Shortridge, and Wash- ington fell before the Hornet spikesters before the season ended, Only Anderson's state champs were able to defeat the Brown and Gold runners. Broad Ripple dimmed Howe's hopes for a city championship as the Hornets placed second for a fourth consecutive year. GOLF Our Hornet turf diggers launched their 1946 campaign by thumping Columbus l4Vz-V2. Next came a victory over Broad Ripple and Short- ridge in a triangular meet. By checking Tech, 23-13, our golfers gained statewide recognition. Shortridge came back and got a dose of the same medicine to the tune of 25-14 in a match short- ened to 10 holes. Ronald Roach came up with the round of the season when he turned in a bril- liant 76 in pacing Howe to its second win over Columbus, 20 V2-7W. Howe was forced to settle for second place in the City-County when Tech came up with a four-man total of 316, followed by Howe, 334, Shortridge, 370, and Lawrence Central with 387. When you see a Howeite with a block H, you know he is not an ordinary guy. Each and every one of these athletes has earned his letter by playing in half the basketball games, totaling fifteen points in track, or playing in half the quar- ters in football. These boys are organized into the Howe Lettermen's Club. Officers this year are Bill Locklear, presidentp Hugh Moreillon, vice-presidentg Tom Barnes, secretary-treasurer: and lohn Yoder, sergeant-at-arms. Their main activity of the year is a dance sponsored in cooperation with the G. A. A. at Christmas time. To these boys we owe Howe's 'success in ath- letics. , V Boys hold no monopoly on sports here at Howe. The Girls' Athletic Association sees to that. Every Tuesday the girls' side of the gym is just buzzing with activity where the sports- minded gals of Howe meet. Ping pong, basket- ball, and volleyball tournaments are just a few of the events held each year. A competitive gym meet is also on the program. Every female at Howe is required to take a certain amount of physical education. Any Tuesday after school lwhen there are no teachers watching? just open the door to the girls' gym and get an eyeful of the activities of the gal athletes. INTRAMURAL SPORTS Sports participation is not open solely to those experts who represent the banner of Howe in contests with other schools. Here at Howe every boy has his chance to attain athletic stardom. Each physical education class is divided into seven or eight squads. ln each squad there are usually from six to eight boys. There are three sports in the intramural sports program includ- ing football, basketball, and track. ln football and basketball the winning squad from each class engages in a tournament after school, with the frosh and upperclassmen being separated. ln' track the situation is entirely different. Each year the first week in Iune there is an intramural track meet. Any boy is eligible who has not participated in a varsity or freshmen track meet. In each class qualifications are held and 'two boys represent each class in each event except in relays Where one team represents a class. No boy may enter more than three events. As in the other sports the freshmen and upperclass- men events are run separate. The individual boys who win places are awarded ribbons. Although the war is over our physical educa- tion department, represented by Mr. Bowman, Mr. Kelley, and Mr. Yeager, still maintains a rigid program, stressing physical fitness. The students go through a regular program of exer- cising, rope climbing, pushups, chinning, and tumbling. All is not work, however, as basket- ball, football, and volleyball add a lighter touch. All these factors contribute toward making Howeites the healthiest in town. QS A GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION G. A. A. The paper we all anxiously await, our bi-weekly Howe Tower, is born amid the confusion of the Tower room. Under the super- vision of Miss Elizabeth Smith, who replaced Miss Betty L. Williams as sponsor of our staff at the beginning of the semester, it is sent to press by the editors, reporters and copy readers. The reporter writes the stories, and they are checked and proofread by the copy readers. The page editors plan their pages, fit the copy into the planned dummy, and vary make-up of the paper. Our budding journalists are required to have a semester of lournalism, English IVI, where they learn the fundamentals of news writing. The News Bureau is a group of eight people who keep the city and county papers informed of the activities of Howe. These students are chosen from the Tower and l-lilltopper staffs, and send stories to their various papers at least once a week.
