Well, coming down to earth, did you ever see such a good-looking nurse and patient as those in the upper right corner? . . . Right below these two Florence Niqhtinqales is a shot of the typing room. Taking care of those beautiful, unobtainable typewriters is important. 7 During the air raid drills, which are intended to prepare us students for an emergency, l serve as a special guard on the lower floor. We guards, with the help of the floor supervisor, do a pretty good job of getting l,3OO Howeites in the right places at the right time .... Almost any old article you could dig up could be contributed to some sort of a salvage drive. Some of my friends on the TQWER and HILLTOPPER staffs are in the top picture salvaging metal from old engravings. l helped in this drive and Helen pushed the glamour salvage for old lipsticks, compacts, and hose. Mom had some old stockings which l contributed. Time was that if l'd pulled old stockings out of my pockets in the hall, the fellows would have called me Powder Puff Howe for weeksfbut times have changed .... Loew, the Dean ot Girls, who has a friendly word tor Howe looys as well as girls. 41' The women teachers around Howe are grand, and the men teachers are really swell guys. Of course, this is sort of hard on the blame it on the teacher type of pupil, but that kind of a student is a ierk anyway. Nine of the teachers are now in the armed service, and it has been hard to keep up with all the faculty changes. The teachers who carne in lanuary are shown in the small picture, while the rest of the faculty is pictured at teachers' meeting. At the Wednesday meetings discussions of school problems, policies, and What has Herbie Howe done now? are in order. Nine new teachers joined the faculty in January. Yes, indeed, lune Mad was really something and that something was gay, romantic, and funny. Penny Wood did a lot of growing up in those three acts, and she did it in a very surprising fashion. As assistant director and chief property man, l feel that l have enough theatrical background to state that it is my authoritative opinion that any one of the actors could easily com- pete with Skinner, the Barrymores, and the Lunts. Of course, the fact that back stage work was done effi- ciently, contributes to their success. Hi-Y boys keep Service File The Hi-Y Club engages in such worthwhile activities as compiling a Service File of the addresses of Howe boys in service and collecting Howe Towers to be sent to these boys. Clean speech, clean sports, clean scholarship, and clean living is the creed by which we Hi-Y boys live. Attending a Hi-Y dance at the Y. M. C, A. is a pleasure I enjoy every month. We Hi-Y's also had a lot of fun sponsoring the Heart Hop. Mr. Virgil Heniser is sponsor. Horizon girls sponsor glamour salvage Helen was one of the most ardent collectors during the silk and glamour salvage campaign, sponsored by the Horizon Club, senior Campfire Girls organization. Although she put many old lipstick containers, compacts, and silk hose in the boxes they had decorated and placed out- side the office, she is still glamourous enough for me. The girls also collected toys which could be made over for poor children at Christmas. At the last meeting of the Childcare course, Helen and her club members presented a play, the Angels. Because of a possible man shortage we invited girls to join our club. Oi course, Helen was our first recruit. Mr. Raphael Wolfe is sponsor. Howes librarians reign in l27 Every day is library clay at Howe, and Helen and the other members of the Library Club are always on hand to answer Information P1ease queries. The girls shelve, catalogue, and repair the older books and prepare new books for circulation. Miss Marthanna McWhir was sponsor during the fall semester and Miss Betty Reed in the spring. l-li-Tri's have a busy year The Girl Reserves have had a busy year sponsoring the glamour salvage campaign with the Horizon Club, collecting materials for a recreation room at the Iapanese Relocation Center in Arkansas, and making scrapbooks for the U. S. O. canteens in Indianapolis. Miss Malvin Morton of the Y. W. C. A. is sponsor. 47 lfffr Z f- 3 I Lonqudge ond literature are lite At our Latin Club meetings we learn about the customs of the people when Cicero was a kid. Don't get the idea that someone gets up and reads Roman history to us from a book for three-quarters of an hour every week. We learn by actual practice, The Romans used to celebrate their Saturnalia at Christmas time and now every year our club celebrates this Roman holiday with a ban- quet. But you must be a well-dressed Roman before you will be admitted. The proper attire is a long white toga, but a reasonable facsimile in the form of a sheet and a few well-placed safety pins is satisfactory. Thus we spend an afternoon lounging, eating, and talking like the Romans. Miss Thelma Cooley is sponsor. Two other activities which we sponsor are the monthly Latin newspaper, Cornu Latinum, published by members of Miss Narcie Pollitt's advanced Latin classes, and a clinic of club members, who aid pupils like me. Si, si senorita instead of being a Roman lady Helen turned Spanish on me. Although l'm a Latin through and through l have to admit that she makes a wow of a Spanish senorita. This club at Christmas celebrates the Posada, following as accurately as possible the Spanish customs, such as the breaking of the Pinata, which is a clay jar filled with gifts. l-lelen says that the club activities aid her in the study of the language because they give her an insight into its background. Even though the membership of the Vihota Club is restricted to junior girls, the activities of this organization affect even me. Without the Vihotas I wouldnt be able to eat ice cream, candy, and popcorn at the home basketball games because these delicacies are sold under the sponsorship of this club. To make a good thing even better the money l pay for my ice cream goes to buy some worthwhile article for the school. Already these arn- bitious violets have bought furniture for the Dean of Girls' Of- fice, the popcorn machine, and war bonds. However, the club is not only worthy of an E for efficiency but socially it has also been more than successful. Besides the allegirl dances and assemblies, the girls give all-school social affairs. Perhaps the most notable contribution from the Vihotas, however, is the Violet Queen, who reigns each year at the Birthday Pageant. Cartoonist Pesut drew some pictures of me representing my many activities, Editor Woerner and Associate Editor Kroll organized the staff, Sponsor Mrs. Ruth Marie Griggs thought up gigantic lists of things to do, and the rest of us did our best to keep up. Then came fall. Our first problem was finance. However, the Staff's business agents di- rected by Business Manager Ioe Weaver solved this problem by selling nearly 1,200 books. Supplementing this were the profits from the Stardust Ball and the Brown and Gold Dance. The autumn season could be called the great picture-taking period for our staff photogf raphers, Bob Stitt and lim Bayly, together with Mr. Charles Porter and Mr. Sam Pidgeon, pro- vided us with shots of everything and everyone at Howe. Under the supervision of Picture Editor Dorothy Bay, the pictures were taken. Bill Woods mounted the prints with his trio of feminine assistants, lane Clark, Thelma Ellis, and Virginia Reese, and sent them to the en- gravers. Each of the individual sections had to be carefully planned. The management of the class section fell to Lucile Rennard, Homeroom Editor, and Natalie Borreson, Senior Editor, while Ruthanne Gossom and Marjorie Metcalf struggled over the club and activities sections re- spectively. Bob Beed and Bob Bowles directed all their attention to the sports division, and Associate Editor, Ellen Kroll, tackled the introductory pages. ln lanuary several seniors left the staff and Mary Frances Patterson and lack Bennoe were added. February was a month of mixups. Everyone was doing everything all at once. ln fact by the middle of this month we were in a muddle. However, we finally finished and the com- pleted dummy was sent to the printer in March. ln early spring he sent us 1,200 copies of the 1943 HILLTOPPEB which we now pass on to you. Deadlines in o daze Before Bob Woerner had decided that l would be indispensable on the staff of the '43 HILLTOPPEB, l had been doing some special reporting for Editors Harvey and Iohnson of the HOWE TOWEB. Every other Monday one of their staffs starts to work on a new issue of the bi-weekly paper. I spent Mon- days and Tuesdays covering my beat, writing whatever news stories seemed promising, thinking up clever features, collecting items for my column, and planning photographs and cartoons. On Thursday, deadline night, the Tower was packed with staff members checking their stories and writing last-minute copy. The atmosphere literally seethed with excitement as the typewriters pounded and bursts of laughter and grief alternately flooded the room. Before leaving for home we page editors collected all the articles which were to appear on our respective pages and arranged them in an attractive layout. The printer sent the proofs to us on the following Tuesday in order that the proofreaders could check for typographical errors. The printed articles were pasted on the layout sheets, which were then sent back to the printer. When the TOWERS were distributed to the students on Friday, l arn certain that niy feeling of satisfaction in the finished paper was representative of the feeling of every staff member. Besides there is that unique feeling of pride which ccrnes from seeing your own articles in print. , Tower Staff I STANDlNGeEvelyn McConnell, Mary Beth Denny, Karolyn Gould, Ieanne Mae lott, Ieannette Ballard, lack Huston, Dorothy Smith, Bob Bowles, Ioan Bruck- man, Lucille Broelcing, Mildred Marshall, Ellen Aldag. Carpenter was added to the staff of the News Bureau as a correspondent to the IRVINGTON REV IEW, and Phil Lasley took Bob Reed's place for the TIMES. Sometimes accompanying the articles of the News Bureau are pictures taken by our student photographers. Members of the photo staff also provide the HOWE TOWER with pictorial versions of the main stories. Taking pictures is not just a snap of the shutter as I found out last winter when I tried to take a snap- shot of Helen. In fact when my attempt was developed, it was so unlike the subject that I was really afraid to show it to her. However, I had Bob Stitt take a candid shot of Helen which I presented to her. That's when she decided to be my steady. In my freshman and sophomore years, I was a representative from my English class to the Cub Club. I arn not eligible for membership now because it is strictly an underclassman organization. During the fall semester Ellen Aldag and Mary Frances Patterson, Cub Editors on the HOWE TOWER, sponsored the club and in the spring Donna Flowers and Doris Mayer took over. In the upper right-hand corner, I present our sponsor, Mrs. Ruth Marie Griggs. Instead of listing all her responsibilities, attempting to enumerate her many tasks, and using ten-letter words to describe our appreciation of her guidance, I find that it is sufficient to say that there is but one Mrs. Griggs and no one else could take her place among us. 53 4- infer! on fiafcffej . . . Before a pupil may become a member he is required to pass a voice test, consequently our choir is composed of only the best vocalists at Howe. With the help of the P.-T. A. We choir members were able to secure robes. When we sang for organizations outside Howe, the money allotted us for transf portation went into the choir robe fund, and we paid for our own transportation. Howe is about drained of firsts, but we students in the choir have in the past year not only purchased our first robes, but have also sponsored our first dance, the Harmony Hoedown. We used the money from this dance to buy music for assemblies and special programs. This year the choir has had a definite patriotic trend, and although we do not neglect Bach, We have included in our repertoire songs, such as He Wears a Pair of Silver Wings and White Christmas. The officers, who were elected by the choir in the fall, are Bill Magnuson, president, Dick Moody, vice president: Bob Warden, secretaryg Mary Beth Underwood, treasurer: and Herbie Howe, sergeant-at-arms. Next came a second act full of the music of my child- hood. From the features of this act l would say that rny childhood was very sweet indeed. l nearly fell off my chair when Helen came out on the stage with her ac- cordion 'cause she looked so beautiful. However, l suc- ceeded in doing no more than hitting a B instead of a B flat, for which I received a very disgusted look from Director Weiscopf. During the year we won the City Track Championship, defended our Sectional Track Title, won the Tech lnvitational Golf Tourney, and were the runner-up team in the Sectional Basketball Tourney. All these sports were under the management of our capable coaching staff composed of Mr. Lewis W. Gilfoy, varsity basket- ball coachp Mr. Samuel T. Kelley, varsity track and cross-coun- try coach: Mr. Ray Bowman, freshman basketball and track coachp and Mr. Fred C. Lemley, golf coach. Mr. Kelley took over the duties of Mr. George P. Farkas, athletic director and coach, when the latter entered the navy in Ianuary. Before Chief Petty Officer Farkas joined the fleet, his Hornet thinlies won the l942 City Track Championship, thus becoming the first city school to defeat Tech since the meet's inaugura- tion in l934. ln conquering the former champions, Howe took five first places and scored in every event except the half-mile run for a total of 65 V2 points. Our blue ribbons were won in the l00-yard dash, 220-yard dash, low hurdles, high hurdles, and shot put. The Green and White had to be contented with a second-place tie with Washington, each team tallying 53V2 markers. High scorers and only double winners of the meet were Ralph Toney, who won both dashes, and Art Graham, who took both hurdles, each with twelve points. Dick Eichen- auer heaved the shot put for our other first place, ln defending our sectional crown at Washington's West Side track, our Hornets again captured five first place honors and scored a total of 4332 points, ll more than Washington, the runner-up. Six of our boys qualified for the state finals by taking a first or second place in one of the individual events at Washington. Those representing us at the state meet were Ralph Toney, dashmanp Art Alexander, half-milerg Walter Gilchrist and Art Graham, hurdlersg lim Wade, high jumper, and Dave Phelps, pole vaulter. Art Graham captured the first state medal ever won by a Howe athlete when he scored our only point in this meet by taking a fifth in the low hurdles. Besides our outstanding achievements in the City and Sec- tional meets, we won eight dual and triangular contests With- out a defeat and climaxed the season by beating Bloomington, Southern Conference Champions, 59 to 50. Bloomington had been undefeated until that time. Ralph Toney was high in individual scoring for the season with 78V2 points. Right behind him was Alan Crapo with 72. Hornets on the hardwood We Hornets finished our 1942-43 basketball season with the throttle wide open, racking up l4 straight triumphs before be ing defeated in the final game of the lndianapolis Sectional Basketball Tourney. By annexing the last eleven tilts of the regularly scheduled season and capturing the first three engagements in the Sec- tional, we compiled this longest winning streak in the history of our school. We also eclipsed any previous record of a Howe Basketball team when we finished the season with l8 victories in 22 starts. lack Buchanan, Hornet guard, cracked the old individual scoring record for one season when he swished a total of 198 points through the nets. The previous mark was 170 points, made by Bob Collins two years ago. Following Buchanan in team scoring was Bob Houck, who also passed Collins' mark with l79 points, and lerry Pfeiffer, who garnered l69 markers. Our team's four losses during the year were at the hands of Tech, Washington, Greenfield, and Lawrence Central and were all by four points or less. We later beat Tech in the Sectionals and avenged our defeat from Washington when we won a re- turn tilt with them in an overtime. We also beat the Continentals in the Sectional. Our loss to Lawrence Central in the Sectional came after we had beaten the Bears 42-29 during the regularly scheduled season. Greenfield, Anderson Regional Champ, was the only team we played which We did not manage to sting at least once this season. Crilfoy's cagers go to Sectional finals ln the l943 Sectionals our team rode clear through to the finish before drop- ping the final game to Lawrence Central, the l942 Sectional champs. ln reaching the finals we eliminated Decatur Central, Washington, and Tech, these last two tilts being by one-point margins. Our first game was with Decatur Central Friday morning, and we complete- ly outplayed the Hawks the first half to build up a 20-5 advantage. Coach Gilfoy substituted frequently during the second half, and we coasted in to finish on top of a 34-23 count. A half-time pep talk by our coach, Mr. Gilfoy, was necessary before we Hornets came to life to down Washington in the evening game. The Conti- nentals ran up an early lead and steadily increased it to a l5-4 margin at the half. However, we pulled up on even terms after trailing most of the third quarter and Dick W'hallon put in the winning two-pointer with eight seconds left in the game to give us a 28-to-27 decision. Our match with Tech the next afternoon was really the climax of our entire season. The Big Green had entered the tournament as strong favorites and had been rated by some sports writers as a threat to the State Championship. The match was a ding-dong affair in which the lead changed hands frequently, but we took over with about two minutes to go and held on until the final gun for a 32-3l victory. Lawrence Central had a little too much height for us in the final game and used it to good advantage, Pete Negley and Ed Lane controlling both back- boards. The Bears were hot and started the game by hitting six of their first seven shots, ending the quarter with a phenomenal .500 shooting average. We made a battle of the entire contest, however, and managed to stay within strik- ing distance most of the time, finishing on the low end of a 42-39 score. 64 A record-breaking season Howe SU New Augusta Howe Fl Tech Howe 45 Warren Central Howe 32 Broad Ripple Howe 26 Washinqton Howe 33 Zionsville Howe 34 Greenlielcl Howe 35 Southport Howe 21 Decatur Central Howe 25 Washiriqton Howe 40 Shortridqe Left to riqht around the circle are! Green and fairway Socking a little White ball all over the landscape and trying to hit a hole in the ground with it had never been my idea of fun, but after watching our team practicing l, too, was bitten with the bug and Mr. Lemley, our coach, says l make a really good caddy. Our linksmen finished their season victorious in seven of eight starts, their record including two ll-4 wins over Short- ridge and a lUV27V2 defeat of Teach. We also captured the Tech Invitational Golf Tourney from Shortridge K337 strokes to 3619 in a playoff after a tie finish at 345. loe Wilson made the 18 holes in a sizzling 74 in the final game. ln addition to these wins we won from Southport 7-5 and beat Lawrence Central and Southport in a triangular meet 9 V2r2 V2 and lOV2-7 Vz, respectively. Our only defeat of the season was at the hands of Bloomington, 9-3. We also finished fourth in the La Porte Invitational with a team score of 358. Bill Hanafee was low medalist for the season. 68 x A pf' O'er hill and dale I saw some of the cross-country boys in practice one fall day and their easy stride as they covered the course excited a sudden urge in me to try for the team. I soon found out that covering our mile and eight-tenths course at any thing but a walk was really quite a task so I went in search of something a trifle easier on my wind. Even without my help our team managed to make quite a successful showing, winning all but two of their regularly scheduled meets and placing third in the Howe Invitational fol- lowing Tech and Manual to the finish line. The Greenclad thin- lies packed too much punch and finished way ahead of the field with 36 points. Manual scored 47 points and we garnered 50 points. Phil Lasley and Bob Banks received individual med- als for placing in the first ten. Our season record of five wins and two defeats bettered any previous record of a Howe cross-country squad. Sport a lo femme While l'm practicing basketball or track, my girl friend, Helen, participates in sports with the Girls' Athletic Association. She really has gone all-out in the national physical fitness program. Last fall While the weather was still favorable the girls prac- ticed archery under the instruction of their sponsor, Miss Mar- jorie White. Then came the volley ball season. Teams were organized and a tournament planned. Every Monday and Fri- day practice games were held in the girls' gym. l was a little disappointed because Helen wasn't elected captain of her team again this year, but she's a member of the best team anyway. ln the spring a girls' ping-pong tourney was begun and games were played after school. Helen was on top of a pyra- mid the girls made as one of their tumbling stunts, and was also on a basketball team. During the warm weather, Helen played second base on one of the softball teams and went out for track in a big way. ' When Helen first wanted to join the G. A. A., she had to earn fifty points by participating in a sport once a week for six weeks before she could become a full-fledged member. Last fall at an assembly program she and lU other girls received their first award, and 4 received the second award, showing that they had earned one hundred or more points. Now she's working on her second award. l'll really have to work hard to keep up with these women. G.A.A. A last page is supposed to wind up things, but I haven't even begun to tell you everything I could. It's all those little hap- penings that make Howe what it is. It's the kids hurrying to fifth hour lunch, it's the fun we have at basketball games, it's the moron jokes everyone tells, it's walking down the halls with your best girl, its something that you can't see or hear, you just feel it. IlVe seniors will take that intangible something with us when we leave this lune. Four years can give you a lot of memories if you are working in a defense factory, going to college, or serving in the armed forces. Helen was low a couple of weeks ago because as soon as I graduate I will become Private Herbie Howe. I tried to cheer her up by giving her my class pin and telling her that fbut why am I telling you what I told her? Well, kids, we dood it -the HILITOPPER staff, Mrs. Griggs, and I.
