In a most unique program, nearly one third of the crew participated in the navy's Program for Afloat College Education or Pace Pro- gram. Completely voluntary in nature, Pace classes were conducted daily underway in a wide variety of subjects under the expert instruction of Professors Tom Spencer and Tom Heffernan, civilian instructors from Florida Ju- nior College..'Demonstrating outstanding diligence and a strong drive to develop themselves educationally, partici- pating HARTmen not only contributed to their own perso- nal development, but to the more efficient and effective operation of the ship itself.
