ESWS Pictured to the left are those HARTmen who completed the rigorous qualification for Enlisted Surface Warfare Spe- cialist CESWSD during the deployment. The designation of an individual as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist signi- fies acquisition of significant professional skills, knowledge and military experience in all areas of the ship vice only those associated with a man's particular field of expertise. This prestigious and relatively new Navy program involves formal qualification of only top performing petty officers with a minimum of two years duty in surface ships, including intensive study of damage control, maintenance systems and the ship's numerous mission areas. While shipboard lectures are provided, this voluntary program keys on self study, based on individual drive to attain the coveted silver cutlass breast insignia, signifying the wearer as truly being a cut above his surface warfare shipmates.
