T a 1 o n Thomas Alva Edison Fairfax County, Virginia Thomas Alva Edison, from whom our school takes its name, is a man credited with many discoveries and innovations. One of the greatest inventions of this man is the elec¬ tric light bulb which is exemplified by this year’s cover. In keeping with Edison’s innovations, we have completely revamped this year’s Talon. It is now in chronological order according to the seasons. The book starts with summer and many preparations for school. Autumn is next with the beginning of the new school year, followed by winter with school in full activity. Finally comes spring, with commencement and the end of school. Other innovations include senior, faculty, and general directories. In addition to the directories we have tried to make it easy for you to find specific clubs, sports, etc. Therefore, at the top of each page, you will find an identification of the season and activity represented in that section. It is our hope that you will find this year’s Talon refreshing and memorable, and that this new format will serve as an example for further Edison publications. This active organization also tutored elemen¬ tary students and participated in Project Concern’s Walk for Mankind.” 1971-72 was an unusual year for the Key Club. Almost losing their charter and changing sponsors in mid-year hurt them badly. New elec¬ tions and better methods of choosing members put them back to normal. The Key Club did, however, partici¬ pate in Labor Day and collect for the March of Dimes. 88 This girls’ service organization was involved in many activities geared toward the general Northern Virginia area this year. Members participated in the Walk for Man¬ kind,” made presents for children at Fairfax Hospital, gave a Christmas party for the Mount Vernon Day Care Center, and held a bunny raffle and a carnation sale. Elise Hoj from Copenhagen, Denmark, lived with Lynn Harmon; Toshito Okamoto from Yokohama, Japan, spent the year with Scott and Traci Brown. Elise and Marty were sponsored by the Ameri¬ can Field Service (A. F. S.), and Tosh was brought to the United States through the courtesy of the Browns. The American Field Service is an organization which sends about 3,000 students from 65 different countries to the US each year. Each student is hosted by an American family and attends the area high school to see and experience a different culture. The main purpose of A. F. S. is to live their motto, Walk Together-Talk Together,” and emphasize the goal that through a better understanding among the young people of the world, we can reach toward world peace. Sponsored by the four service clubs at Edison, Keyettes, Key Club, Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y, the A. F. S. students give speeches at various schools, visit the Kennedy Center often, and spend a week in Washington, D.C., with a black family. 50 WINTER Japan: Toshito Okamoto Denmark: Elise Hoj Chile: Marty Contreras 151 STUDENT LIFE ORGANIZATIONS Staff; Row One: Mrs. Kulesher, Mr. Wisniewski, L. Edison in this, the tenth edition of the Talon , we have chosen to break away from the traditional eagle theme which has been used in the past nine editions. This break echoes this year’s theme, change. Just as Edison al¬ tered the world through his inventions, we have altered the face of the Talon. In the early fall, the yearbook staff sent out an opinion poll to the student body for suggestions on improving the book. The results were: a fall delivery, more candids, captions for the candids, paragraphs describing the organizations, and more color. We have complied with all these suggestions fully. It’s true the reader may have trouble at first finding the dif¬ ferent clubs, and the various sports aren’t combined in one section; but our purpose has been to present the 1971-72 school year as it happened, not in a stiffly organized manner. In the Nineteenth Century, a man named Thomas Edison created controversy and received criticism for his ridiculous talking machine, electric light bulb, and moving pictures. In 1972 the Talon will stir controversy and criticism for its unorthodox approach and purple cover. We hope that you will benefit from and come to enjoy this edition of the Talon as you have Edison’s inventions. If you have criticism, please be constructive and give the 1973 staff suggestions. Better yet, join the staff and lend them a hand. In closing, this year’s Talon staff wishes to express its appreciation to everyone in¬ volved in making this book a totally rewarding experience. 255 The 1972 Talon staff wishes to express its appre¬ ciation to the following people: for assistance, advice, and patience— Mr. Tom Young of Paragon Press for superior work and cheerful help— Mr. Robert Nichols and Mr. George Deal of LaMont Studios for six years of dedication to the students and staff of Edison High School— Mr. John Alwood for cooperation and constant help— Mrs. June Harrison and Mrs. Peggy Hatfield for assistance with Labor Day— Mr. Monroe Parker; Mr. Raymond Cwalina and the Jazz Ensemble; and Mr. Arthur Gil- lis; Tom Weldon and the Key Club for their generous financial contributions— Mr. Willis Clark and the Hi-Y Talent Show for cover design and art work— Tony Mathias for long hours at the typewriter— Marilyn Butler for contributions of pictures— Barry Bryan, Carol Dillon, Ann Gorneva, Kathy Mclnroe, Phyllis North, Dave Quacken- bush, Jeanette Sinclair, Stuart Sprouse, Pam Stachoviak, Elaine Thome, David Warner, and Mike Wayshner for all their help and support— the students, faculty, and staff of Edison High School and for three years of hard work— the moving force behind the Talon, our advi¬ sor, Miss Barbara Reeves
