To further leadership, service and to prepare for useful cit¬ izenship was the goal for Thomas Edison’s Keyettes. A select group of girls, they mixed fun and fellowship as they served. Their numerous activities included tutoring -in Alexandria, skiing, putting on skits, surprising secret pals, providing adopted Dinny with funds and campaigning for charities. tri-hi-y Creating, maintaining, and extending were the guide lines for Edisons Tri-Hi-Y, a service club affiliated with the YWCA for interested and willing young women. Mem¬ bership was based upon student selection by a faculty and student committee. The society par¬ ticipated in social events in which culture was stressed. fhs A newly activated organization at Edison for students of French, its purpose was to stimulate the study of French, reward the high scholastic attainments and create a better understand¬ ing of French culture and civilization. The German Honor Society was a most active organization which selected outstanding students for achievement in the study of German. The society participated in many projects designed to stimulate appreciation of the German culture. Members attended plays, restaurants, and took field trips. Students who had achieved a 4.0 in their Junior year of math and 3.5 in their Senior year, received recognition by participat¬ ing in the Mathematics Honor Society. The society promoted additional interest, better understanding and comprehension of the many areas of this science. It featured student speakers, Tuesday tutoring, and field trips. Members: Pres., R. The German Club members shared many such oc¬ casions in this manner. The club sponsored an Octoberfest, Fashing parties and made a trip to Pennsylvania. 24 french club Bringing France and her customs closer to America was one of the goals of the French Club this year. Every other Thursday, the team competed in in¬ traschool matches with other district schools. debate society An organization designed to build debating skills and assist in public speaking found its members active participants in dis¬ trict league tournaments. Although confined to more active par¬ ticipation in the spring and fall, the team found its members ever prepared to resolve that; Congress should prohibit unilateral United States military intervention in foreign coun¬ tries. Anderson. 30 astronomy club The Observational Astronomy Society was organized with the intention of star-and-moon-gazing, viewing heavenly bodies, and attempting to learn of the world outside our own. Open to all students interested in any angle of medicine. Mediserve helped the community. Members stuffed Christmas stockings for hospitalized children, made afghans, knit sox, sweater, mittens and caps for the Alexandria chapter of The Red Cross. They provided a means of outlet and instruction to musical students, much to the benefit of the school and student body. Separately, each group has left its contribution. The Marching Band performed during halftime at football games and pep rallies, and marched in parades and competitions. Members of the Reserve Band, in training for the Symphonic Band, played at the joint Christmas Concert. The members spent Mondays and Tuesdays at a nearby stable and enrolled in begin¬ ning, intermediate, and advanced horseback riding classes. The team was coached by Miss Ezell; Evie Boyd and Susie Redfield were co-captains. The team attended camp this summer and was ready for a victori¬ ous season. If one did not decorate a hall, perform in the Follies, or build a float, he could wear his class’s color on the appropriate day. The week was climaxed by a bonfire on Thursday, a foot¬ ball game on Friday—which the Eagles lost to the J.E.B. Stuart Raiders, and a dance on Saturday night during which Sue Car¬ ney was crowned Homecoming Queen.
