U.S. History, Economics, Sociology A knowledge of the histories, geographies, and governments of other nations as well as our own is important to Americans in today ' s strife-filled world. At Edison, students can further their knowledge of social studies by taking world history, world geography, U.S. his¬ tory, government, sociology-economics, and psychology. Juniors in American history courses utilized movies, textbooks, stu¬ dent reports, and debates to review the events and ideologies which have shaped American society. Meanwhile, as world history students traveled the centuries from the cradles of civilization to the space age, those enrolled in the world geography courses roamed the globe studying the terrain and its in¬ fluence on social and cultural patterns of life. From government courses seniors acquired an appreciation of the complicated workings of our government. These classes and some of the history students had the opportunity to see the movie The Making of the President , based on Theodore H. White ' s Pulitzer Prize-win¬ ning book about the I960 presidential election. The sociology-economics course was again offered to upperclass¬ men only, introducing them to the principles and problems of eco¬ nomics in the modern, complex world society. These Wall Street geniuses chose stocks to buy and they kept careful records of their progress. This provided an excellent opportunity to study the workings of the stock market. Psychology classes dealt with the individual and his needs in society. The lessons these courses teach are invaluable to a student if he is to have a thorough understanding of today ' s world.
