It was also in that year the Edison Bears won their last district football championship. That is, until the Edison Bears defeated the Jefferson Mustangs 27-10 at Alamo Stadium to hand them their first district championship and playoff berth in 22 years. The victory gave Edison a 6-1 record in District 31-5A play. Sam Houston and Highlands also had one loss but since the Be-ars beat both Houston and Highlands earlier in the year their win over the Mustangs clinched them the district title. The Bears, meanwhile were 7-3 for the year and with the win they had the unenviable task of meeting the tough Churchill Chargers in bi-district. Bears give Chargers Scare. The heavily-favored Church- ill Chargers moved into the city championship but not before the Edison Bears threw a bit of a scare into the Team That Might Be King. Edison hadn't been in any sort of play- off in 22 years and judging by the way the Bears started, they were tight. ln the first half, Churchill was never forced to punt and Carlson completed eight of nine passes for 126 yards. That set the tone for the first half as Churchill ran up a 24-O lead. To Edisonls credit, the Bears could have gone into early hibernation then, but Greg William's team fought back to make things interesting when Edison scored twice in the third period to narrow the score 24-13. The mini-come back was even more impressive when you considered that the Bears went nearly the entire game with its backup quar- terback Joe Paveglio. The Chargers made it 38-13 with their last 7-yard scoring drive and the Bears got the final touchdown of the game, when Paveglio hit La Fargo on a 39-yard bomb that was tipped by Charger defensive back Chris Eichler. The Edison Bears Football season was a very exciting and spirited one. We feel that every player and coach should be recognized for their remarkable accom- plishments. District Champions 17
