About the Book . . . ls there any better way to guide man's prog- ress amid the creation, to define the very act which allows him to assess and understand the universe, in which he is not a disconnected frag- ment but the complete image of the whole? By coloring and engraving man makes the creation visible, indicating both his identity with the cosmos and his distinctness from it. This act offcoloring and engraving is inseperable from the very act of being conscious. Therefore, what better ,symbol is there than the stained- glass window if one wants to get as close as pos- sible tothe human work as itCe34pa'ndsEcoYding to the decree of the Revelation. By stained glass, in terms of art we mean a window filling composed of an ensemble of small glass plates, coloured or otherwise inter- connected as in a mosaic, and painted to form an image. lt has been said that people are much like stained glass windows. They glow and sparkle when it's sunny and bright, but when the sun goes down only then is the true beauty revealed if there is a light from within. ,.fg' T ' ' ' ' ' ' ' 'TTTOEW3 Are All a tained Glass . . . Pep rallies always bring out the Bear in everyone at Edison High School. This year was exceptional, though, because our football team had such a spectacular season. Teachers, students, coaches, and even parents took part in the pep rallies. Cheerleaders did skits to entertain the screaming student body, while the Mar- ching Band featured some of its sounds and soloists. This year, Spirit and Pride was the main in- gredient at our pep rallies. We walked to every game with our heads high, and whether we lost or won, we knew we had something to be proud of Our Bears. Many Freshmen were involved in sports, :hool clubs, and class activities. Some participated in pep rallies, ent to school dances, and supported the Bears at all sporting zents. It was also in that year the Edison Bears won their last district football championship. That is, until the Edison Bears defeated the Jefferson Mustangs 27-10 at Alamo Stadium to hand them their first district championship and playoff berth in 22 years. The victory gave Edison a 6-1 record in District 31-5A play. Sam Houston and Highlands also had one loss but since the Be-ars beat both Houston and Highlands earlier in the year their win over the Mustangs clinched them the district title. The Bears, meanwhile were 7-3 for the year and with the win they had the unenviable task of meeting the tough Churchill Chargers in bi-district. Bears give Chargers Scare. The heavily-favored Church- ill Chargers moved into the city championship but not before the Edison Bears threw a bit of a scare into the Team That Might Be King. Edison hadn't been in any sort of play- off in 22 years and judging by the way the Bears started, they were tight. ln the first half, Churchill was never forced to punt and Carlson completed eight of nine passes for 126 yards. That set the tone for the first half as Churchill ran up a 24-O lead. To Edisonls credit, the Bears could have gone into early hibernation then, but Greg William's team fought back to make things interesting when Edison scored twice in the third period to narrow the score 24-13. The mini-come back was even more impressive when you considered that the Bears went nearly the entire game with its backup quar- terback Joe Paveglio. The Chargers made it 38-13 with their last 7-yard scoring drive and the Bears got the final touchdown of the game, when Paveglio hit La Fargo on a 39-yard bomb that was tipped by Charger defensive back Chris Eichler. The Edison Bears Football season was a very exciting and spirited one. We feel that every player and coach should be recognized for their remarkable accom- plishments. The Bears won district after a long and rocky 22 years. What is football season without pep rallies? It's a school with no spirit. But we had spirit, yes we did. Many teachers, parents, and students waited after school for the first pep rallies. Later in the season the time changed for the rallies. From the beginning during pre- season when we played the l-larlandale Indians to the end, when the final climax was against the Churchill Chargers, pride was apparent. The Edison Golden Bears stood proud and walked tall. Each and every pep rally became something to look forward to. By the end of the drive, the Student body had made over S1,100. All this money went to a good cause. lt went to purchasing lots of food to help many needy families in our own Edison community. Led by a great Bear offense and followed by an outstanding Bear defense was the right combination for a district title. The Bears great offense led by quarterback Victor Gomez, along with runningbacks Larry Retault, Sammy Gomez, and Keith Edwards are only part of the whole offense that helped with the district title. The Bears defense really stood out by stopping opponents with only short gains. The Bears started the season right by defeating Harlandale 14-0 in their first game. The next game against Madison was one of the best games of the season. It was a hard fought game with the Bears losing 21-6. Holmes was the hardest pre-season game played. The Bears were overpowered and lost 37-8. The opening district game against Highlands was a very close one, but ended with our Bears on top 14-8. Opposite Page: Victor Gomez tries for long yardage. Tech proved to be worthy opponent for the Bears, but our Bears rose to the occasion and met the challenge as they defeated the Buffs 7-3 in a very close game. Against Burbank, the Bears took an easy victory, winning by a score of 30-O. Wheatley was the only team to defeat the Bears in district play. They won the game on Bear mistakes by a score of 14-6. The Bears recovered from that loss and in a breath-taking game they beat Sam Houston. The Bears and the Cherokees fought to the last second and as the smoke cleared the Bears came out on top 14-13. Now with the last game coming up everyone knows the Bears have a very goo-d chance for the district title. Now the Bears meet archrival Jefferson on the playing field and prepare for the battle. There is a feeling of excitement in the air and you can feel it. As the final second ticks off the clock the crowd rises and cheers not only the Bears but the District Champs as they defeat Jeff 27-10. 36 Football Hu kies Bite Bears Q 1 it ugh 3 mf R Opposite Page: Top: The great Bear offense lines up for another great play. Now the mo- ment comes that everyone's been waiting for, and as the Bears come on the field the crowd gives them a standing ovation. Although our Bears start off slow, they start to come back in the second half. They finished with a 4-5-1 record. All their Edison Lanier losses were only by a touchdown, which isn't much. The only team to defeat them by more was the Highland Owls. Even Edison Fox Tech against them the Cubs showed a great team effort. Outstanding players for the J .V. Football team were Edison Burbank Quarterback Mark Wallace, Split End Jaime Montemayor, Tight End Roland DeLos Santos, Runningback Oscar Pacheco, Edison Wheatley and Tight End Nick Paveglio. Some very exciting games this year were those against Houston Worthing, McCollum, Jefferson, Lanier, and Highlands. Even with all the disappointments this year the 1981-82 Bears Basketball team never gave up, and put out tremendous effort at all times and for these among other reasons, it was a team that Edison students can be proud of. Basketball Team. They ended this year with a 10-17 record which is really an understatement considering the skill and coordination the team has as a unit. Most of this year's team will be advanc- ing to play on the Varsity Team next year. This year's team had a lot of problems plaguing them this year, mainly their height. They also had a lot of pro- blems with injuries which cut down their strength considerably. The team's outstanding players were Mark Wallace, Bryan Myler, Roger Almarez, Thomas Espinoza, and Scott Cox. Coach Washington did an excellent job considering the circumstances. Their overall district record was 9 wins and 5 losses, These wins included defeats of Wheatley, Burbank, Sam Houston, Fox Tech and Lanier. Out of district wins in- cluded defeats of Edgewood, Memorial, and Southwest. The major disappointment of the season was the Spr- ing S.A.I.S.D. tournament. Many of the players grew stiff first round competition and as a result, the team finished fifth in district. The major highlight of this tour- nament was the number one boys doubles team of Joe Sandoval and Alex Hernandez who showed an outstan- ding effort in finishing fourth in district out of 16 doubles teams. With valuable experience gained in tournaments such as the fall S.A.l.S.D. tournament, the S.A.l.S.D. invita- tional tournament, and the Harlandale I.S.S. tourna- ment, and with all team members returning next year, the prospects for a successful 82-83 season appear good. Tennis 71 ocoer Team Looks Ahead This year the Boys Soccer team faced stiffer, more competitive teams. They ended the season with a 4-3 record. The team had some coaching problems and a lot of tough breaks that caused them to lose some very close games. Some outstanding players on the team this year were George Trujillo, Rodolfo Corielo, Javier Laguas, and Estevan Medina. This year's team will be returning to play next year. With this year behind them they are looking toward next year when this sport becomes part of the U.I.L. and then they'll have a chance to play teams from all over the city and then over the state. ChoirfBand Parents 109 The Few, the Proud, the R.O.T.C The purpose of R.O.T.C. is to teach leadership. Leaders are not born, they are trained, and in the R.O.T.C. they get that training. Good citizenship, self- reliance, and communication are very important as well as physical fitness. Before they graduate high school, they will know what it is like to have leader- ship, and to have some kind of dedica- tion, self-discipline and responsibility. They make it their job to take care of the flags and display the flags that not only represent their unit but their country as well. They participate in football games and other functions. The First-Aid team teaches members to treat casualties before medical personnel arrives. It's a specialized unit made up of R.O.T.C. members that are trained as First-Aiders. These members learn the difference between a tourniquet and a bandage and learn to apply materials such as these to special wounds that require them. The Orienteering team learns about map reading, and learns about compass skills as well. They learn to take on the world with outdoor activities and go on cross country trails by foot. They experience what it is like to be on their own, even if it is just for a few hours. They've worked hard this year and will, un- doubtedly continue to work hard as long as there is an R.O.T.C. They also set all light fixtures for plays and assemblies held for all Edison students. Mr. Cunningham teaches students to fix all sorts of radios and televisions, as well as basic electronics for later in their future. Paint 81 Body is another on the job training program. This program prepares students to learn how to repair damaged automobile bodies, uphol- stery, electrical and air condi- tioners. A student may wish to spe- cialize in any of the repair areas. However this is only a small portion of the repair job. In this program students also use all types of hand and power equipment including hydraulic jacks, pulling devices, filing, grinding and sanding. A student also learns to use the oxyacetylene torch as well as the welding equip- ment in the repair process. Edison Body Shop offers students a three hour pro- gram, for three years, begin- ning as a Sophomores through their Senior year. Baseball, Track, Basketball, and Volleyball teams also gave their opponents something to remember. May 28, the senior class of '82 celebrated their graduation at the Convention Center Banquet Hall ffl. The ROTC really got cracking at their ball this year. They shed their skins at the beat of the Air Force Band. The decorations, Donna Wong and her commitee took care of that, The band was The New Approach, spon- sored bythe Air Force. The cadets raised money for their great event by selling candles. Without a doubt the ball was a very successful one. Right top: Claudia Velazquez listens closely to what Sgt. Major Hendrick has to say. The stage band and choir also helped in their share of the entertainment. But it was Cindi Arnett and William Rodriquez who made the seniors once again realize how close graduation really was. While Cindi played the piano, Will sang the senior song, 'I Wouldn't Have Missed It For The World . All in all the show was a success, everyone realized that the seniors would soon be leaving good ol' E.H.S. This page: Left: Will Rodriquez sings sr. song. Top Right: Pat Vargas represents R.O.T.C. The senior class started working early in order to raise money for a May 7 prom at Turtle Creek. The class sold jewelry and did many other money raising activities. In order to have a prom no one would forget it would have to look pretty good. So it took only 7 seniors and a couple of sponsors to fix that. These seniors and sponsors were up early to help decorate the Turtle Creek Country Club, and were back up there by 7:30 for PROM NIGHT . The graduation of this year's senior class was held the night of May 28, 1982 in Banquet Hall vifl at the Convention Center. 350 restless seniors showed up for the long morning rehersal and by 8:00 p.m. the class was getting more anxious about graduating. Every member of this class was a winner in his own field whether it was athletic or academic. There were also those who had already reached the ultimate goal of total satisfaction. Will Rodriguez, accompanied by Cindy Arnett, sang the class song I Wouldn't Have Missed It For The World for the last time to the senior class. Both the class and audience listened in silence, overwhelmed with emotion. ln his address to his fellow classmates, valedictorian Robert Dalglish challenged everyone there to be Happy in Life . After the recognition of honor students, Mr. Henry Young presented the class to be certified. Diplomas were handed out by Dr. Willam Elizondo and Mr. Tom Lopez. Following The Class President Danny Uranga, the class moved their tassels from left to right. By the roar of the Class you realized how proud they were of themselves and what they had accomplished. At that time Phillip Lobo gave a motivating benediction. Next the graduates marched in the recessional with pride and joy in their hearts. Good times should be made to last, Haste, that notorious enemy of memories, turns awareness into forgetfulness. And, momentous experiences are over, A almost before they've begun. Fun times, unique times, become lost times . . . unless they achieve immortality between the covers of a book. t Some say yearbooks can make time stand still. They can. H What better way to capture memories than in between the ' framework of a book? The Spark Yearbook Staff of 1982 has tried to piece together a work that you will enjoy, one that will be most V rewarding. May every page that you turn bring back happy times, sad times, all the in between times, and memories, for these are all we have to remind us of antiquity. - Our Picture is Complete. .
