The Fabulous Fifties . . . a decade of growth, progress, and fun . . . ten years that transformed children into young adults soon to graduate from high school cmd step into a more mature world. Chosen as the theme of the 1960 Spark, the Fabulous Fifties is an excerpt of an era that has introduced luxuries and inventions undreamed of fifty years ago. Though advancement in America's production of ma- terial goods has ranked her tops in standard of living to the continuous amazement of other nations her granting radical freedom to her teen c1t1zens never ceases to astound the world Most American youngsters dance by the time they reach their early teens and are accustomed to mixed parties They attend social functions and interscholastic competitive events year round From the age of tlurteen boys run a close race with clothes for top spot in girls thoughts At first glance many people might think that teens of the U S are light headed kids with nothing more im portant to do than go go go-and in no special direction Students sometimes give such an impression but fortunate- ly high ideals and ambition are an integral part of teen life The teen set of 1959 60 contnbutes its share of foohsh unny incidents but it also holds Americas future 1n its ands Careful study reveals that tlus young generation IS not only not so bad as many think it but actually shows promise of producing scientists professors diplomats politicians and businessmen that will surpass those before them This generation may do exactly that the reason? ossunt quza posse videntur They can because they think they can l 4 f . .
