In its history Thiel College has been extremely fortunate in the caliber of Christian men who have come forth to lead the institution. The office of the president has become a symbol of the college's highest ideals, standards, and goals, he represents the college to the community at large and his long-range plans, his foresight, his ideals and his personal life not only influence directly the life of the college, but also determine the effect the college will have in the widening circles of its program. Thus it is with a great deal of anticipation and optimism that the Thiel community looks forward to the presidency of Dr. Chauncy C. Bly, a man whose accomplishments and abilities, which recommend him for this position, are exceptional. A relatively young man, Dr. Bly was born in Hanon Province, China, Where his parents were serving as missionary teachers. ln 1927, the Blys moved to Northfield, Minnesota, where Dr. Bly was graduated from high school, following his graduation he attended St. Olaf College, from which he was graduated with honors in 1941. Since that time Dr. Bly has furthered his education by earning his Master of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees at the University of Rochester, by completing the requirements for his Ph.D. in experimental pathol- ogy and radiation biology, and by working towards the reception of a medical specialty certiicate from the American Board of Pathology. The presidentis field of interest led to his being appointed to several im- portant posts, such as graduate assistant at the University of Rochester, intern assistant in pathology at Strong Hope Memorial Hospital in Rochester, the Atomic Energy Commission Postdoctoral Fellow of the National Research Council in medicine at the University of Rochester, and one of the first American Cancer Society Scholars in cancer research. He has also held positions on the faculties of the Schools of Medicine of Rochester, Illinois, Kansas, and Duke Universities, where he not only taught but continued his research and wrote profusely. Dr. Bly's interest in his church assures Thiel of a dedicated Christian leader. ln addition to his numerous activities in his home congregations, he has served on the executive committee of the Central States Synod, the executive committee of the Lutheran Laymen's lvlovement, the Board of Foreign Missions, the Board of Lenoir Rhyne College, and the National Lutheran Council in the division of college and university work. Dr. Bly resigned his position at Bowman Cray School of Medicine at YVake Forest College in North Carolina to assume his duties at Thiel College in March. Under his excellent guidance, leadership, and infiuence Thiel, indeed, can look to the future with a great deal of enthusiasm and optimism. 9
