The staff realizes that a book cannot equal the breadth and depth of the personal impressions gleaned by you, the individual student, It is not a living thing and it can only reflect your sentiments. However, if some day in the near or distant future you pick up your copy of the Endymion and chance upon a photograph which recalls a cherished moment, then your college yearbook will be a success. This publication does not attempt to be all encompassing, it is merely a compro- mise rather limited in its scope. After you have graduated you may return to Thiel for a visit, but it will never again be the same. The moment that you receive your diploma, you know that a door has closed forever on one period of your life. As an undergraduate, you have already discerned change taking place. You have witnessed the con- struction of new buildings, you have observed the changes in the programs of study and even in the overall attitude of the students. Yet, despite this lack of permanence, you will always see Thiel as you knew it. You may not recognize the campus in the future, but the Enclymion staffs endeavor to capture this year in words and pictures will remain immutable. This is a chronicle more for the sentimental future than for the critical present. Specific instances are pleasant to remember, but they will serve the purpose of enriching your general impression of a wonderful experience. Besides the academic aspects of college life, the Endymion presents the organizations which supplement and enrich the curriculum oHered the student. From the all- encompassing activities of the Student Union to the informal discussions of the Lenten study groups, these organizations form the nucleus of student strength and cooperation. You alone have been the life blood of these activities, they could not exist without your interest and assistance. The various campus organi- zations are evidences of the student vitality and enthusiasm which strengthen Thiel and the alumnus pride in it. The important ingredient at any college is the individual, only he knows whether he will reach his peak through belonging to a group or through striking out on his own. However, the most important point of his college experience is that he does reach that peak. As you peruse this yearbook and recollect your college years, you are the only person who knows whether or not you have reached that peak. You have shared many wonderful moments with professors and with other students, and it is what you have put into your four years at Thiel College that will make the efforts of the Endymion staff a success or a failure. Bly MD., Ph.D. 8 In its history Thiel College has been extremely fortunate in the caliber of Christian men who have come forth to lead the institution. The office of the president has become a symbol of the college's highest ideals, standards, and goals, he represents the college to the community at large and his long-range plans, his foresight, his ideals and his personal life not only influence directly the life of the college, but also determine the effect the college will have in the widening circles of its program. Thus it is with a great deal of anticipation and optimism that the Thiel community looks forward to the presidency of Dr. Chauncy C. Bly, a man whose accomplishments and abilities, which recommend him for this position, are exceptional. A relatively young man, Dr. Bly was born in Hanon Province, China, Where his parents were serving as missionary teachers. ln 1927, the Blys moved to Northfield, Minnesota, where Dr. Bly was graduated from high school, following his graduation he attended St. Olaf College, from which he was graduated with honors in 1941. Since that time Dr. Bly has furthered his education by earning his Master of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees at the University of Rochester, by completing the requirements for his Ph.D. in experimental pathol- ogy and radiation biology, and by working towards the reception of a medical specialty certiicate from the American Board of Pathology. The presidentis field of interest led to his being appointed to several im- portant posts, such as graduate assistant at the University of Rochester, intern assistant in pathology at Strong Hope Memorial Hospital in Rochester, the Atomic Energy Commission Postdoctoral Fellow of the National Research Council in medicine at the University of Rochester, and one of the first American Cancer Society Scholars in cancer research. He has also held positions on the faculties of the Schools of Medicine of Rochester, Illinois, Kansas, and Duke Universities, where he not only taught but continued his research and wrote profusely. Dr. Bly's interest in his church assures Thiel of a dedicated Christian leader. ln addition to his numerous activities in his home congregations, he has served on the executive committee of the Central States Synod, the executive committee of the Lutheran Laymen's lvlovement, the Board of Foreign Missions, the Board of Lenoir Rhyne College, and the National Lutheran Council in the division of college and university work. Dr. Bly resigned his position at Bowman Cray School of Medicine at YVake Forest College in North Carolina to assume his duties at Thiel College in March. Under his excellent guidance, leadership, and infiuence Thiel, indeed, can look to the future with a great deal of enthusiasm and optimism. 9 Academic Dean Philip I. After having received her B.A. degree from Ursinus College which is located in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, her M.A. from Syracuse University, and doing graduate Work at Duke University, she assumed the re- sponsibility of being Dean of VVomen at Thiel. She continued her studies at Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University. As Dean of Wonien she was concerned principally with administrative and counselling duties. The responsibility for all Womeifs resi- dence halls and the programs developed Within them was hers also. Along with Dean Stoeber, she had general charge of all student activities and advised the Student Union, Council, and Senate. She compiled the college social calendar, was secretary of Thiel Forum, acted as chairman of the Thiel Center Committee and the Council on Convocations and Special Occasions. Dean Marple acted as liason between the college and the American Association of University Women in addition to being advisor for all foreign stu- dents, WSCA, Cwens, Les Lauriers, and Pan- hellenic Council besides holding oflice in many community organizations. It Was With much regret that the Thiel Board of Trustees accepted Miss Marple's resig- nation of her post on April 27, 1961. Although We are happy to see her have the opportunity to continue her studies, her absence will be a great loss to the Thiel community. The Endymion would like on behalf of the student body to ex- te11d a most heartfelt thanks to Miss Dorothy Marple and send with her our wishes for a successful future. Standing: Betty DeLong, Karen Benson. The Curriculum Study Committee was initi- ated last year upon approval of a recommenda- tion from President Irvin that the faculty con- duct an evaluation of Thiel,s education program during the 1960-61 academic year. The new recominendations brought in by the faculty- study committee, upon formal approval from the entire faculty of the college, should be put into effect as part of the new curriculum for 1962- 1963 According to plan, the study should ex- tend over a two year period-the iirst year be- ing devoted to study and the second to discussion of the committees report. A faculty committee composed of Doctor Roy H. Iohnson, chairman, Professor George C. Reese, Professor Emeritus Henry McLaughlin, and Doctor Philip Mitterling was appointed to head the study. .Mr. Joseph Werlinich and Mr. Earl Mezoff were made consultants. A sub- committee was also elected composed of two representatives each from the Science, Humani- ties, and Social Science divisions. Active student participation was felt to be necessary, therefore, six student leaders were appointed to serve as consultants to the com- mittee. They are: Karen Benson, Nancy Larson, Betty DeLong, Bonnie Yonkers, Jim Dingfelder, Howard Smith. To supplement the committee findings questionnaires were circulated among the students and alumni. As a final result of the curriculum study, students at Thiel will undoubtedly see a re- alignment of departments and requirements, the creation of new interdepartmental major fields, and the elimination of cooperative and special programs as well as changes in the college calendar. It gives recognition to those students who have been outstanding in scholarship and service to the col- lege during their freshman year. A local sophomore honorary, Cynelic, was initiated into the National Society of Cvvens in 1958 and became the Rho chapter. The colors are crimson and silver. The insignia is a small gold pin consisting of a crown and scepter. Cwens is a service honorary. Its service projects this year included helping freshmen Women move into the dormitories, offering tutoring services to the fresh- men vvomen, acting as ushers for assemblies, serving as aides for teas, and conducting tours of the college for prospective students. The Rho Cvvens earned money this year by baking birthday cakes, sponsoring an informal dance, selling boutonnieres at the Christmas Dinner-Dance, and having a booth at the Spring Carnival. An address by Professor I-Ieisenbuttel on the play I.B.v and a tea for alumnae Cwens highlighted the cultural program. The oiiicers are: Karen Shannon, president, Sandra Reigleman, vice president: Pat Daugherty, secretary, Lynn Nichol, treasurer. Miss Marple is the advisor. Les Lauriers Les Lauriers is a senior Womeifs honorary. It gives recognition to women who have shown outstanding leadership on campus and en- courages women students to strive for excellence in administration and participation in student affairs. Requirements for membership in Les Lau- riers are an overall 9.0 average and a specified number of points from activities in the following lields: honoraries, student government, social, religious, athletic, and class activities, and fine arts. The number of actives is from 10 - 20 per cent of the class and elections are held each semester. The activities of Les Lauriers include vari- ous cultural projects, senior Womens banquets, and providing help for the faculty members of Thiel College. It is the present goal of this organization to affiliate with a national honorary having the same ideals. Mengs Honorar Row 1 Cleft to rightl: Paul Kokenda, Roger DeCort, J. At a special convocation honoring the Right Reverend Otto Dibelius in November, the an- nouncement was made that Thiel College Was to have for the first time an Honorary and Leader- ship Society for Men. This organization which will soon become associated With the honorary Omicron Delta Kappa, Was the result of a recognition of the growing need for a men's ser- vice and leadership society comparable to the Women students' Cvvens and Les Lauriers. At the announcement of the society eleven men students were elected. These men were chosen from the men students at Thiel for their service and leadership to the college and student body. The students in order to achieve this honor had to be of junior or senior standing and rank in the upper 35 per cent in scholarship among men students, the membership is limited to three per cent of the total number of male students. Also the students had to have attained distinction in at least one of the following divisions of student leadership: scholarship, athletics, student gov- ernment, publications, and speech, music or drama. As can be plainly seen, the students elected represent a variety of interests and have in some way contributed as leaders in some area of college life. The activities of this new honorary will re- late to the objectives of Omicron Delta Kappa. The college as a Whole Welcomes this much needed organization and Wishes it success in its worthy endeavors. i I 14 SENIORS Seated fleft to riglitl: Bonnie Yonkers, Arlene Flowers, Sue Stineman, Letlia Morton. It has a three-fold purpose: stimulation of sound scholar- ship, dissemination of scientific knowledge, and promotion of biological research. Beta Beta Beta is the only active science honorary on the campus. Bios is the quarterly journal of the group. Regular meetings were held once a month, every third Wednesday. These meetings con- sisted of lectures, movies, research papers, or reports on projects. The membership is divided into two groups: the provisional member and the active member. To become a provisional member, a student must have completed at least 8 semester hours of biology and maintained an 8.00 or better average. To become an active me1nbe1', a student must be continuing his study of biology and have completed at least 10 semester hours of biology. An active member must maintain a B average in biology and an overall B campus average. The provisional members are usually taken into Beta Beta Beta after semesters, and at the same time, past pro- visional members are activated. Beta Beta Beta members take part in dis- cussion groups, banquets, and Held trips. It has become customary at the Beta Beta Betais an- nual Spring Banquet to serve turtle soup made from a turtle caught by the provisional mem- bers. The members also take an annual spring trip, this year to Canada. These trips last ap- proximately six days, and take place between the end of finals and graduation. At Thiel College, We students are very proud of the form of democracy that is evident on our campus. Set up similar to the national government, the Thiel Student Union consists of the Student Council - executive, Student Senate - legislative, and the Judicial Board - judicial. All students are members of the Student Union. The oflicers of the Student Union and their duties are as follows: The President presides over the Student Union and the Student Council and is an ex-officio member of Student Senate. He also appoints the student members of the student-faculty councils, and as a true repre- sentative of the students, he reports his plans for the coming year. The vice-president presides over the Student Senate, and when the president is absent, assumes his duties. The secretary of the Student Union and Council is an ex-officio member of the Senate. The judicial Board Chairman and the Social Chairman have many duties in addition to being members of the Senate. The Social Chairman prepares a social calendar for the term he is to be in office and then presents it to the Senate for approval. In addition to the Student Union officers, Senate membership is composed of a clerk and senators representing each social organization, each class, WSGA, TCF, dormitory presidents, Thielensian editor, students from the student- faculty councils, a male and female Independ- ent, and the Dean of WVomen and the Dean of Men as advisors. The Student Senate executes such duties as approving budgets, the Social Cal- endar, fund raising campaigns, and amendments to the Student Union Constitution as well as electing publication editors. Endymion The Endymion is the yearbook of Thiel College which is published annually by a staff made up entirely of students. Mr. David Neigh- bour serves as advisor to the staffs which include literary, layout, photography, and business each under the direction of an editor or manager. The entire publication is directed by an editor and an associate editor. Contained in the Endymion are pictures of the classes as well as a story in pictures of the activities of the Thiel community during the previous year. Feature articles are also Written on many important organizations, persons, and events. Thus, the Endymion serves as a diary and a memory book for students to remember their years of college. In the past it has been the custom for the book to be done by the junior class, but be- ginning with this 1961 book it has become an all-school project. Upperclassmen editors have both freshmen and other upperclassmen on their staffs who will be capable of taking over editor- ships in future years. Anyone who is interested and Willing to contribute his time and energy can ask to be placed on one of the Endymion stalls. Much Work is done by these staii mem- bers and others who work hard behind the scenes with little credit. The end of the year's work comes each September when the Endymion staff presents its publication for the year at one of the early fall convocations. In future years the yearbook stall hopes for a larger budget and a more com- plete book to meet the needs of the growing Thiel student body. Finishing the season with a record of four wins, two losses and one tie, DiFebo's team captured second place in the PAC. First place in the conference went to WVestern Reserve. The Tomcats got oil to a slow start, losing to the Albright Lions of Reading and the Blue Streaks of John Carroll. However, combining Hue offensive and defensive ball, the team made homecoming a great success by defeating Case Tech 42-8. In a bitterly fought contest the Tom- cats tied Grove City 14-14, and in later games were victorious against Bethany and VV. 81 I. The Allegheny game was perhaps the most ex- citing of the year. Migrating from Thiel were some 400 students who saw the Tomcats win 16-14. Captain for the squad and playing his last season for Thiel was Frank Stratiff. During his four years at Thiel he has received many honors and played fine ball. This year he was named Thiel's outstanding athlete, was named to the All-District Team, All-PAC Team and the All- Pennsylvania Team.
