History in the making is hardly intelligible. As the time process helps to produce it, so it helps at length to interpret it. Here at Thiel there is much history in the making, in the life of the institution, in the lives of its sororities and frater- nities, in the lives of its professors and students. ln the pages following we have tried to capture not alone a fixed picture of all that Thiel may mean at the instant of publication, but in larger measure, to pre- sent a living portrayal of the interacting forces and personalities which character- ize the Thiel of today forging forward to the Thiel of tomorrow. Jane, posing before the photographer, has a pretty face and an engaging smile. That repre- sents a true part of her, but not all. We see her with some of her friends, in the cast of a play, in the swimming pool, or cheering at a football game. We see some of her professors, some times posed, trying to make the impression which they feel worthily reflects the dignity of their calling, sometimes caught off guard, and re- vealing a real sense of humor, a kindly charity, a broad sympathy, an appealing humanness. This is alla part of Jane at Thiel, a part of you at Thielg this is your Thiel as you will be happy to remember it when your sons and daughters come here, following in your steps. As to the fisherman, his battered hat, veteran of many excursions with rod and reel, represents the spirit of his sport. so that he clings to it with almost weird affection,-so it is the little here, the little there which makes up life at Thiel, which we have attempted to claim for you, hoping that in days to come these are the things which mean Thiel to you. With this halting at- tempt to make understandable a thought really too deep for words, we set before you this volume, expecting it to speak for itself, hoping that you will like it. czmw 74.
