THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER COMMANDER JOHN W. CROWE, USN COMMANDER CROWE ENTERED THE NAVY DIRECTLY UPON GRADUATION FROM MANHATTAN COLLEGE IN NEW YORK IN I94O. FLIGHT TRAINING COMPLETED, COMMANDER CROWE RECEIVED HIS WINGS IN 1941. AFTER SERVING HIS FIRST TWO YEAR TOUR AS AN AVIATOR ABOARD THE USS OMAHA EARLY IN WORLD WAR Il, COMMANDER CROWE NEXT SERVED IN PATROL BOMBER SQUADRON I28 WHERE HE PARTICIPATED IN A VARIETY OF AIR ATTACK MISSIONS, FROM ASW TO LOW-LEVEL STRIKE MISSIONS. AFTER THE CLOSE OF WORLD WAR II, HE SERVED AS AN INSTRUCTOR IN THE NROTC. NEXT DUTY WAS WITH PATROL SQUADRON 8 IN AR- GENTIA, NEWFOUNDLAND, AND GREENLAND, WHERE THE FIRST COLD WEATHER TESTING OF THE P2V NEPTUNE PATROL CRAFT WAS ACCOMPLISHED. AFTER A BROAD RANGE OF DUTIES FROM TEST PILOT AT THE NAVAL AIR TEST CENTER AND ATTENDANCE AT THE ARMED FORCES STAFF COLLEGE TO STAFF DUTY WITH COMMANDER FLEET AIR WING ELEVEN, AND DUTY IN THE PATROL DESIGN BRANCH, BUAER IN I957 COM- MANDER CROWE BECAME THE COMMANDING OFFICER OF PATROL SQUADRON FIVE. DURING HIS TOUR WITH PATROL SQUADRON FIVE, THE COMMANDER MADE EXTENSIVE ICE RECONNAISANCE FLIGHTS OVER THE ARCTIC REGIONS. IN AUGUST 1958, HE LED A SPECIAL SURVEY FLIGHT OVER THE NORTH POLE IN CONNECTION WITH FUTURE SUBMARINE TRANSITS UNDER THE ARCTIC ICE CAP. AFTER HELICOPTER TRAINING AT PENSACOLA, FLORIDA, IN EARLY I959, COMMANDER CROWE REPORTED ABOARD THE USS THETIS BAY IN APRIL TO BECOME EXECUTIVE OFFICER.
