I THIS IS OUR SHIP U. S. S. THETIS BAY HER HISTORY IS AS VARIED AND COMPLEX AS HER OPERA- TIONS. ORIGINALLY COMMISSIONED AS CVE-90 EARLY IN I944, SHE BECAME KNOWN AS 'THE GAY NINETY' DURING HER OPERATIONS IN THE PACIFIC AT THE CLOSE OF WORLD WAR TWO. THETIS BAY STILL BOASTS A BATTLE STAR FOR HER PARTICIPATION IN THIRD FLEET OPERATIONS AGAINST JAPAN, IN ADDITION TO THE NAVY OCCUPATION SERVICE MEDAL, THE AMERICAN THEATRE MEDAL, AND THE WORLD WAR TWO VICTORY MEDAL. IN JANUARY OF I947 'THE GAY NINETY WAS PLACED OUT OF COMMISSION IN RESERVE. , IN SUMMER OF I956, EXTENSIVE CONVERSION WORK COMPLETED AT THE SAN FRANCISCO NAVAL SHIPYARD THETIS BAY PREPARED FOR HER NEW ROLE IN THE NAVY. ON JULY 20TH, I956, U. S. S. THETIS BAY REJOINED THE FLEET AS CVHA-I, THE WORLD'S FIRST AND ONLY HELICOPTER AS- SAULT CARRIER. HER JOB: TO DEVELOP TECHNIQUES IN THE CONCEPT OF VERTICAL ENVELOPMENT, WHEREBY COMBAT MARINES ARE TRANSPORTED TO THE OBJECTIVE VIA HELICOPTER. INDEPENDENT OF THE LIMITING FEATURES OF TIDE, SURF, AND AVAILABLE BEACH, WHICH HAD RESTRICTED AMPHIBIOUS OPERA- TIONS DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, A CARRIER GROUP COULD NOW STEAM ALONG AN ENEMY COASTLINE, LAUNCH ITS HELOS, AND LAND ITS BATTALIONS WITH PIN-POINT ACCURACY MILES BEHIND ENEMY COASTAL DEFENSES. OR SO THETIS BAY WAS TO PROVE. BY SPRING OF I959 THETIS BAY HAD MORE THAN ACCOM- PLISHED HER MISSION. A NEW FAMILY OF CARRIER TYPES BE- GAN TO APPEAR --LPH, LANDING PLATFORM HELICOPTER. IN MAY OF I959, DURING THIS WESTPAC CRUISE, U. S. S. THETIS BAY ICVHA-II YIELDED HER 'ONE AND BECAME HLPH-6, TO JOIN THE NEW TYPES OF WHICH SHE WAS THE PROTO- TYPE. 'film
