In fact, your guess was as good as ours. But, after perusing encyclopaedias, travel guides and previous records of Cook's Tours, we found that Thetis was a beauti- ful Greek legendary goddess Cbelieve it or not-this is from Homerb who lived in the sea and protected all who traveled by sea. She was also the mother of Achilles, the great hero of the Trojan war: Getting down to hard facts we found that Thetis Bay is located in Southwestern Alaska and that it received its name from a revenue cutter that res-' cued the Greeley Expedition in l884 after two other rescue parties had failed. Thetis Bay is the south arm of Tebenkof Bay, and according to information pried from the navigators, it is an excellent anchor- age for protection from storms. The USS THETIS BAY was launched at l2l9 on 16 March 1944. The sponsor was Mrs. Rico Botta, and her Matron of Honor was her daughter, Miss Phyllis Botta. They are the wife and daughter of Captain Rico Botta, who has had a long and dis- tinguished career in naval aviation. He entered that branch in its fledgling days when we were in the first World War. He has been flying planes or has been connected with the aviation field 'ever since. His was one of the' planesf entered in the famous, Iohn Rodgers Flight'to'the Hcigvaiian Islands in the early 2U's. A . -r muon RELAIQ ...r':':.'.:,tt:.,S:fm.'2... ll!! Al ,Q-A . , xx , . . v Q, MA' mga, mg - 'Yin hs CAPTAlN DONALD E. WlLCOX, U.S.N. With twenty years of experience, ranging from Aide and Flag Lieutenant for Admiral King to acting in an advisory capacity for the British Fleet Air Arm, Captain Donald E. Wilcox came to the Thetis Bay when she was just CVE 90. Everyone's fears as to the type of person the Skipper would be were readily qualmed by the handsome and soft-spoken four- striper standing before the crew, reading the orders that provided for his taking command of the new addition to the fleet. During the nine months that he had command the high regard that was first had for Cap'n Don never ceased. His reserved self proved a great asset to the men particularly while sailing through the dark waters of the Pacific. Under his able guidance the ship gained the distinction of being the most Widely traveled of all transport-carriers for a period ot nine months. His Wonderful job done awarded him with a shore billet at Floyd Bennett Field, New York. - -,....,...,..,,. - r.l...4,,,,.c. -- 11:4 4-fe f ef- ' CAPTAIN BENIAMIN E. MOORE, U.S.N. The barnacles had more than begun to gather on the hull of the Thetis Bay. She Was no longer a new ship but one that had conquered many horizons and delivered many necessary supplies to the out-lying forward bases of the South Pacific. To this experienced ship came the former executive officer of the USS FRANKLIN, Captain, then Commander, Ben- jamin E. Moore, a short person in stature but great in the ambitions to retain the distinction that the Gay Ninety had gained. He applauded the work well done and, in a truly traditional manner, had hopes of doing better. He achieved that goal. Upon the ship's return to the States new orders that would tempor- arily change us from a transport to a replenishing carrier for the Third Fleet, that was then making its menacing attacks on the Iapanese home- land, were received. His experienced hands guided our anxious hearts safely through the North Pacific where it gave us inexplicable joy and pride to be, knowing that we were then actually a part of the final stabs that rewarded us with victory over our assailants. OUR PRAYER O most mightly and gracious good Father God, Thy mercy is over all Thy works, but in special manner hath been extended toward us, who Thou has so powerfully and wonderfully de- fended. Thou has showed us terrible things, and wonders in the deepg how both the winds and seas obey Thy commandg that we may learn, even from them, to obey Thy voice and to do Thy will. We come to Thee in days when swift tragedy abounds, when worlds are shaking as before coming judgments, when civilization itself is tottering, when in the balances of God so many are being weighed and found wanting, when the reali- ties which make life worth living are facing quick destruction. Make our lives real and purposeful, rich, and pure, and good. l-lelp us to choose aright a life full of blessing to ourselves and our fellows, to right the wrong and to make the crooked paths straight through Iesus Christ our Lord.
