SALTMAN CAROLINE SCHNEIDER BERNARD UNGER AdminisfrofiveAssisfc1nf Administrative Ass'f Dean of Boys Deon of Girls DMI ISTRATQR DEDICATION The 20th century has been rocked by two World Wars, shocked by Hitler's mass extermination of millions of innocent people, and iolted into acute awareness of the nuclear bomb threat. Now, to the ever-growing list of man's disillusioning acts towards his fellow man, we can add yet another inhumane deed-the murder of the three civil rights workers, Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney. As the Long, Hot Summer of 1964 began, it was obvious to everyone that the road to equality for the Negro would be a consistent uphill struggle. Yet we all hoped that anger and bigotry would not flare up and consume in such an irrevocable way. Three youths, along with hundreds of others, had gone to work in Mississippi as part of the Civil Rights Movement. Two were white, one a Negro, all had the single goal of furthering the cause of the Negro. But what motivated them? What was the drive, the urgency, that beckoned them to such a tragic destiny? Perhaps one of the three had felt the restless call that centuries before had brought his ancestors to a new and unexplored land and was now calling him to the untrodden soil of equality. To another, life might have been a dark wall, casting only vague shadows. For him the Civil Rights Movement might well have been the faint beginning of daylight which would scatter the shadows and doubts. Yet another could have been in- fected with a true desire to lift the suppression which has for so long ruled the Negroes' way of life. Whatever their separate motives may have been, these three boys- fiendishly killed, then buried in a common grave-now are eternally bound together in a common memory. One will never be remembered without the memory of the other two close at hand. Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney were Ameri- cans in every sense of the word. They died in an effort to make a reality of America's greatest ideal-that all men are created equal! To this worthy ideal and to these young martyrs, we, the graduating class of 1965, dedicate this Senior Saga. Charlotte Fischer N-L MARLA D ewes cf! We drift back to our younger days and think about the mischievous, innocent children we were, and how since then we have developed mentally as well as physically. Many factors are responsible for this noticeable development. Among the most prominent of these has been the impact of our high school years. A great transition occurred upon our entrance into high school, because it was at that time that we reached the major period of our maturity. During the past three or four years at Theodore Roosevelt, we have nurtured our minds with a wealth of information, a large portion of which we will soon forget. But more important than the academic knowledge we have acquired, we have gained much practical knowledge to help us under- stand our fellow man, and to make some of the involved problems life brings with it easier to solve. The wonder of taking on life was the basis upon which was erected an individual. Our personality, character, mannerisms, and opinions grow firm and stable, as we move closer to maturity. Our high school years were largely responsible for the opinions and personality traits we now bear. Upon graduation from high school, we face the future and decide how to use the information we have acquired. There is a world waiting to greet us, upon whose creation we had no influence, but whose continu- ance and further growth rests in our hands. It is we who make the de- cisions that may, and should prove monumental. In future years, as we sail along the sea of life, rough though it may be, we will cast a momentary glance back at the shore of adolescence, and we will be able to review our development and see the reasons that moti- vated us to act as we did. Our high school memories now become another chapter in our Book of Life. As we prepare'to set sail, we, the graduating class of 1965, are proud to have been a vital part of Roosevelt's life, as Roosevelt has been a vital part of our lives. MATILDA JOHNSON SAGA OF OUR DAYS CHAPTER ONE As we walked through the halls of Roosevelt for the first time, many thoughts filled our minds. We realized that we would be spending the major part of our next four years here and we hoped we would like every- thing about the school and readily be accepted. We saw many strange faces, and searched the crowds for at least one familiar one. We felt lonely but soon understood that most of the other new students felt the same way. We became much more comfortable as the days turned to weeks and the weeks became months. We were introduced to many clubs, among them, the Spanish Club, the Newman Club, and the Hebrew Culture Club. The boys were invited to ioin the Fencing Team, Rifle Team, and many others. Time flew by and then the big day came. We got our first High School report card. For many of us the results determined how much allowance and how many dates we would have during the next few months. Typical reactions heard through the halls were, lt's impossible! I don't believe it! He failed me! This term brought another proud event into Roosevelt's history. Our principal, Miss Mary Clare Callan, was awarded the 1961 citation by the United Cerebral Palsy Association. The entire school took great pride in this honor. lt seemed that the former Pep Squad wasn't too peppy at basketball games, so they were given a boost and called boosters. Now, our boosters give a real boost to our team at basketball games. Our first term at Roosevelt was coming to a close. lt had been an event- ful term which gave us an idea of what our life at Roosevelt would be like. We were all looking forward to inter-session, and then to our new classes. Inter-session was like a second Christmas vacation, because we lucky fresh- men had no Regents to study for. ISAAC MUNDZ ROBERT PASCUZZI S A G A O F O U R D A Y S CHAPTER TWO After a week of retirement and the ioy of not having any Regents to worry about, we anxious freshmen returned to the most popular game among freshmen everywhere, ''Merry-go-round-the-hallways. It seems that after a whole term at Roosevelt, finding rooms would be an easy task, but there were still a few exceptions. The tension of being in a new school had worn off by this time and we were able to look forward to the many events the spring term would bring. Roosevelt is very well-organized and the students who are active in dif- ferent groups keep the other students well informed of the school's activi- ties. This was made apparent to us the first time we read the school newspaper, The Square Deal. It may not rival the New York Times, but it was considered good enough for a first place rating at the 38th Annual Columbia Press Association Convention. We have the enioyment of reading it once a month. The first weeks of the spring term passed quickly. Winter was ending and the first signs of the new season were showing themselves. During our Easter rest, we started to study for mid-term exams, which were to follow soon after our return to school. Also about this time, news of the coming Boatride was being publicized around the school. We had heard so much about this annual event and we were all looking forward to it. On the morning of the event, we awoke full of excitement. The trip to the boat was strange and confusing, but we arrived in plenty of time. Upon boarding the boat, we met our friends and formed laughing, talking, happy groups. Arriving at Playland, we dispersed in all directions and spent a few hours taking advantage of all of the rides, occasionally stopping for a soda, or a hot dog, or candy, or ice cream, or pop corn, or cotton candy, or something else. The next social event we awaited was the annual Spring Concert given by our music department. Once again the performers outdid themselves. About this time, the thought of final exams became eminent and we began some serious studying. These exams were necessary evils and we met them in the best way we could. Great expectations filled us on the last day of school. We received our report cards and then thought about summer vacation. We had grown to love Roosevelt in the short time we'd been here, and were proud to call it our school. Coming into Roosevelt was like getting up in the morning and and going through a busy and exciting day, and the end of the year was like going back to sleep again In our dreams we prepared ourselves for j . ff Q nother day, and the beginning of another year. Thoughts of what the following day would bring were vivid in our minds. For all of us who passed through the doors of Roosevelt for the first time, there was a strange feeling of bewilderment and excitement. None of us knew exactly what to expect, but we all wanted to meet others who felt the same way. Our third term at Roosevelt was the scene of many events. Our little adopted boy, Jai-Sun Kim, whom we got through the Save the Children Federation, wrote to us from his home in Seoul, Korea. New faces ap- peared at home, too. Mr. Arnold Moss, Mrs. Katherine Helfer, Miss Martha Scriven, and Mrs. Karen Kornhauser joined the Roosevelt faculty. Mr. Jacob Cohen was promoted to the well-deserved position of Chairman of the Mathematics Department. We witnessed the debut of the Leaders Training Club. Barbara Spencer became a Junior Olympics winner when she outran her competition in the forty yard dash. She is among our many athletically inclined students. As the term progressed we were made aware of the many social activi- ties that were offered. That year, the Halloween Hop proved to be a huge success. Many of our students showed great enthusiasm towards school events and clubs, and this encouraged shy sophomores to become an active pa rt of Roosevelt. It was at this time that the Square Deal interviewed some well-known celebrities. Eddie Fisher was interrogated backstage after a performance at the Wintergarden, and Robert Reed was the other performer who was -questioned by our roving reporters. Our first real introduction to the talent our school posesses was at the annual Christmas Assembly. We were very impressed at hearing the differ- ent vocal groups and the instrumental accompaniments. SAGA OF OUR DAYS CHAPTER FOUR Well, there we were, fourth termers, after a week's between-term vaca- tion. For a maiority of us, it was quite an experience to get a whole set of new teachers after only one term. But new teachers weren't all we had in store for us that term. To start the semester off on a note of togetherness , the Human Rela- tions Club, under the skillful direction of Mr. Leo Lieberman, sponsored our first International Buffet Dinner during Brotherhood Week. ln the spirit of brotherhood, parents, teachers, and students sampled the foods of many nations. Another new experience at Roosevelt was a Valentine's Day Dance, at which time everyone enioyed the good music and the decorations in the gym. Here we were to meet the future members of our clubs, teams, honor societies, T.R.O. Council, and the scholarship and celebrity winners of our senior class. But more important, we were to gain friendships that would last us through our remaining years at Roosevelt and possibly longer. In March, we attended a Talent Show sponsored by Miss Elkin and the T.R.O., which was a grand success. Through the efforts of Mr. Sanford Wolf, as emcee and auditioner, the shy boy from across the luncheon table became a lively and talented singer, and the tomboy from study hall turned into an agile and graceful ballerina. We witnessed the birth of a new literary magazine which was christened Prelude, and was under the creative guidance of Miss Natalie Sheidlower. When published, it was acclaimed highly by its readers. Our Square Deal once again won first prize at the Columbia Press Convention. Everyone waited impatiently for the day which was soon to arrive. On May 'l5, 1963, we boarded the City of Keansburg, the boat which was to take us to Rye Beach. A marvelous time was had on the boat and at Play- land, and we began thinking about next year's trip. The fourth term would soon be over, but before summer vacation, we had to wrestle with Regents exams. We felt more in the swing of things and were looking forward to a year of many exciting ex- periences. All iuniors wanted to try their luck at the PSAT exams to be given shortly. We knew that although these College Board Exams were only practice, in a year's time we would be taking the real thing, so we tried to achieve the highest scores possible. This term brought with it many new assets to our fine faculty. Among the newly appointed teachers were Mr. Eisenberg, Mrs. Moscato, Miss Lipnack, Mrs. Wepner, Miss Ratner, Miss Sloves, and others. Mr. Leo Lieberman left our staff and assumed the responsible iob of Assistant Principal at P.S. 22, Bronx. Also, for a short time, Peace Corps members gained much experience by teaching and observing classes. Their sojourn at Roosevelt was to serve as basic training for their future assignments as teachers in remote corners of the world. Much praise was given to our own Darvels whom we heard at various school functions. Their first record, I Lost My Baby, was really great, and we all predicted a successful career for them. As autumn wore on, and the holiday season approached, one bitter November afternoon cast its dark shadow over the land. The stinging recol- lection of President Kennedy's assassination was imprinted firmly on our minds and spirits. The Thanksgiving season of that year was a saddened one, and we all gave thanks for having lived under his short, yet meaning- ful administration. Snow started covering our city and all the bright signs of the Christmas season soon filled shop windows. Between shopping uptown and down- town, we spent some time at home studying for mid-terms, which were soon to be upon us. With these tests completed, we watched a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas assembly, and at the end of the day, we wished our friends a Happy Holiday, and rested for the next ten days. After settling down, all of the departments regained their normalcy once again. Things started buzzing, however, in the English department, espe- cially around room 302, as Miss Natalie Sheidlower and her staff began preliminary work on the second publication of Prelude. They busily worked on Thursday afternoons to complete the magazine on time. Before we knew it, we had another vacation coming. With the comple- tion of finals, we looked foward to inter-session and thought about new classes, new teachers, and new problems we would soon be facing. There were many exciting events that charac- terized this term, and helped to make it as great as it was. We will always remember the gaily postered cafeteria and the vibrant campaign speeches of the political season, its outcome being the election of Joey Rosenblatt as our T.R.O. President. On the sports scene, the Foilers, our fencing team, won the Bronx Championship, and our Rough Riders went far in displaying their athletic abilities. The Fashion Show, whose purpose was to raise scholarship funds, was another outstanding event of our sixth term. We were serenaded by Roosevelt's own Beatles, better known as the Darvels and were entertained by our own girls modeling the newest spring fashions. We also watched some magnificent African dancing and listened to the Chorus and Dance Band. Quite a few of us sixers had the privilege of becoming Honor School or Arista members, its new leaders being Fran Blattstein and Allan Blitz. The Music Department presented its annual Musicana in June and a countless number of musical programs in the auditorium throughout the year. The Bicycle Club 'took a cycling trip to the World's Fair. lt was also during this time that the Biology Club sprang from the scientifically minded students, under the direction of Mrs. Karen Kornhauser, and became offi- cially known as Chapter 2236. Prelude piloted by Miss Natalie Sheidlower and the Square Deal men- tored by Mr. John Peters, both won second place at the Columbia Press Convention due to the efforts of their capable staffs. SAGA OF OUR DAYS CHAPTER SEVEN From the moment of our arrival at the gates of Roosevelt, we, the pres- ent seniors looked forward to and patiently awaited our seventh term. This marked a stepping stone in our lives, for being a high school senior is an experience never to be forgotten. Our particular senior year began on September l4, 1964. At this time, many of us had overcome the tedious part of our high school careers and were looking forward to the brighter side of things. Among the activities which are prominent in our minds was the annual Red Letter Day celebration in which a good number of seniorsparticipated. One of the highlights of the program was a speech given by the elected senior president, Lillian Velez, and the vice-president, Lillithe Meyers. The senior play entitled Politics: Roosevelt Style was a smashing sensation and the skit presented by the celebrities was just great. Thank yous were in order for the teachers as well as the students who made this day one of complete fun and excitement. Still, we took pride in the more serious aspects of our seventh term. The induction ceremonies of Arista, and the election of the Honor School Council were attended with great earnestness. By far, the most important part of the fall term was that occupied by the Regents Scholarship and College Board exams. These tests became the deciding factors in the future of most of the seniors, and had to be considered with much seriousness. The inauguration of numerous clubs spread like fire throughout the school during our senior year. Among them were the Future Teachers'Club, and the Gardening Club. The long established clubs continued to serve the students as they had in the past. This term also saw a new Square Deal staff, its Editor-in-Chief being Henry Fasciani. The entire staff worked for a better newspaper and hoped to achieve it. IRIS COIIEN Stenography Honor Certificate: Minor R, Music. ,p-N. An outstanding event of this term took place at one of our assemblies when we were honored by the presence of Mr. Jonathan Bingham, a candi- date for the 23rd Congressional District, and Dr. Leon Nadrowsky, chair- man ofthe Physicians' Committee for Goldwater. They were two interesting and informative men. Outside the walls of Roosevelt, a hard fought cam- paign was taking place, as Mr. Lyndon Johnson ond Senator Barry Gold- water contested forthe i964 presidential election. Lyndon Johnson became the 35th president of the United States. Yet, there is something deeper than iust these events that brings special meaning to the word senior, The dictionary definition reads, more ad- vanced in dignity, rank, or office, and perhaps that is the answer. We have achieved a sense of belonging and a feeling of possessing qualities developed with the help of a devoted faculty. We have also learned the importance of the intimate friends we have acquired during our stay at Roosevelt. SAGA OF OUR DAYS CHAPTER EIGHT Winter snows turned to spring rains, and spring rains turned to summer's warmth. Days seemed to leave almost before they arrived. Time moved ever so quickly, carrying with it memories of our past three or four years at Theodore Roosevelt. Many events have occurred and many good times have been had by all. The dances, the trips, the performances of Roose- velt's students at talent and fashion shows, and many other occasions are now things of the past, never to be forgotten. Other unforgetables in- clude-failing tests, struggling through Regents, our beautiful cafeteria, and, May I have your attention please? Please listen to me, this is Mr. Saltman speaking. They all went to make up a very enioyable stay at Roosevelt. One of the events characterizing our senior year was Red Letter Day last November. This was one event all seniors looked forward to with great anticipation because it was the one day set aside to boast seniorship. The winter months brought a skating party which was attended by many of us and proved to be an exciting evening for everyone. Our annual Spring Concert was proof of the many hours of rehearsing that all band, orches- tra, glee club and chorus members had gone through to make their last public appearance in Roosevelt a successful one. The applause they re- ceived showed that they had reached their goal. June brought many thrilling events the first of which was our annual boatride to Playland. This is the highlight of any year at Roosevelt, but this year it meant iust a little more to the seniors. Since it was our last, we made it our best. Characteristics were a watermelon on the boat, scat- tered guitars, screams heard from the roller coaster, cotton candy, loads of fun, and more of the same. On the way home, each of us felt sad, knowing we would not be here next year to enioy the excitement of this wonderful day. We will never forget the feelings of happiness and nos- talgia we experienced on this day. Hug FAY CYMMER Arista: Honor School-5 termsg Scholarship Classy Scholarship Certificate. Our Senior Advisor, Mr. Robert Pioselli, outdid himself again by seeing that our activities were properly scheduled and carried out smoothly. The Senior Prom was an evening of sparkling color, fun and thrilling excitement for those who attended. lt was held on Friday evening, June 4, in the Georgian Room of the Americana Hotel. It now takes its place as a page in our book of memories. Our senior trip was the next big event which added to the experience of our senior year. We spent an exhilerating day picnicking at Rockland 'Lake State Park. All of us enjoyed the sports, the food, the fun, and being with good friends. The year was climaxed by the most meaningful event for any senior. This was Graduation Day, June 29. This ceremony has been our goal since we entered the doors of Roosevelt, and with a true feeling of accomplish- ment, we close the doors behind us. It was a beautiful day indeed. The ceremonies were held at the R K O Fordham, and, as we marched in, wear- ing caps and gowns of maroon, a feeling of pride filled each one of us. lt was not pride only in our school, but also in ourselves. Let us hope we will never forget this wonderful school that so strongly influenced the most important part of our lives.
