-4 I T7 l Qizi.. M ,W ibeckcafion Only a few short months ago, the peace and order of our world here at Theodore Roosevelt High School was threatened by the untimely death of our beloved leader Dr. John V. Walsh. However, our grief and insecurity were allayed by the fortuitous appointment of Miss Mary Clare Callan as our new principal. It was she who made possible for us, the graduates of Theodore Roosevelt, all the ioys and plans of our Senior Year. It was she who, with her added hope and courage, kept our world safe and orderly. I ln a few short years, we will think back with tender thoughts to this precious, fleeting time, and this book will be the key which will open the door and let us glimpse once more the past-forever lost. And so, it is only fitting that when we turn that key, we think of and remember the most prominent influence of that time-our principal, Miss Mary Clare Callan. We do not know what is to become of us, but whatever has been good and decent in us until now we give to you. To you we offer our delights and our despairs. To you we offer our painful fears and our poignant hopes. To you we offer our hopeless failures and our ecstatic success. Bound up in this book lie four of the best, most precious years of our lives. This is what we offer you, Miss Callan. Vivian Gornick MARY CLARE CALLAN PrinciPUl

Jeanette Sewell Davis Today! To us, the graduating class of February, 1953, the word Today spells Transition, for we are on the threshold of Past to the Future. Today we can look back with pride and a touch of sadness on our days as students of Theodore Roosevelt, and also forward to a new way of life. Today is the meeting place of the past we cannot re-live and the future we must face. But, in the excitement and magic of today, we must not forget our yesterdays. It is true that those were days of strife and occasional anguish, but after a while we forgot these things, for all our yesterdays were not unhappy ones. There were also many carefree and gay, and heartwarming yesterdays. Though yesterday's labor may have seemed wasted, today's harvest shows the result of our toil. Today's satisfaction at having achieved our goal in spite of many obstacles, would never exist if we had not striven yesterday to overcome these obstacles. lf we had not worried yesterday about our tomorrows, we would not be where we are today. For Today is the Tomorrow we worried about Yesterday. So, for all the graduates of this class, I say: l would not lose the yesterday For that would take today from me. N ylda Rivera
