Doon of Boys Dean of Girls THEODORE ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL -4 I T7 l Qizi.. M ,W ibeckcafion Only a few short months ago, the peace and order of our world here at Theodore Roosevelt High School was threatened by the untimely death of our beloved leader Dr. John V. Walsh. However, our grief and insecurity were allayed by the fortuitous appointment of Miss Mary Clare Callan as our new principal. It was she who made possible for us, the graduates of Theodore Roosevelt, all the ioys and plans of our Senior Year. It was she who, with her added hope and courage, kept our world safe and orderly. I ln a few short years, we will think back with tender thoughts to this precious, fleeting time, and this book will be the key which will open the door and let us glimpse once more the past-forever lost. And so, it is only fitting that when we turn that key, we think of and remember the most prominent influence of that time-our principal, Miss Mary Clare Callan. We do not know what is to become of us, but whatever has been good and decent in us until now we give to you. To you we offer our delights and our despairs. To you we offer our painful fears and our poignant hopes. To you we offer our hopeless failures and our ecstatic success. Bound up in this book lie four of the best, most precious years of our lives. This is what we offer you, Miss Callan. Vivian Gornick MARY CLARE CALLAN PrinciPUl ANGELINA ACITO Ilalian Cerlificales ww ROSE ADER Silver Scholarship Pin , ,X ., ' . Jeanette Sewell Davis Today! To us, the graduating class of February, 1953, the word Today spells Transition, for we are on the threshold of Past to the Future. Today we can look back with pride and a touch of sadness on our days as students of Theodore Roosevelt, and also forward to a new way of life. Today is the meeting place of the past we cannot re-live and the future we must face. But, in the excitement and magic of today, we must not forget our yesterdays. It is true that those were days of strife and occasional anguish, but after a while we forgot these things, for all our yesterdays were not unhappy ones. There were also many carefree and gay, and heartwarming yesterdays. Though yesterday's labor may have seemed wasted, today's harvest shows the result of our toil. Today's satisfaction at having achieved our goal in spite of many obstacles, would never exist if we had not striven yesterday to overcome these obstacles. lf we had not worried yesterday about our tomorrows, we would not be where we are today. For Today is the Tomorrow we worried about Yesterday. So, for all the graduates of this class, I say: l would not lose the yesterday For that would take today from me. Then, even if we were only freshmen, we were proud, because our T.R.O., with the financial aid we gave it, was supporting three war orphans, whom we accepted into our happy family. We can also remember the thrill of going on our first High School Boat Ride aboard the S.S. Americana. This day was made possible by our late and beloved Principal Dr. John V. Walsh and also Mr. Samuel Godnick. Summer time came with a two month vacation. When vacation time was over, we were eager to go back to high school. This time not with the feeling of a freshman, but with that of old timers. We remember that in that semester a trip was taken to Oyster Bay to honor the grave of Theodore Roosevelt. Although this is only a small portion of events we seniors recollect, they will remain cherished in our hearts for many years to come. The odor of paint came wafting from our gym, and the shining walls matched our spirits as we entered into the excitement of the first day. We soon found that extra-curricular activities had been discontinued, due to a situation cqncerning teachers' pay. Despite this fact, our dramatic class gave a delightful performance of the play Don't Feed the Animals.!' lt was a humorous comedy performed by our first rate students. Mr. Samuel Godnick and a group of student representatives attended the annual pilgrimage to the grave of Theodore Roosevelt at Oyster Bay, on October 27. Organized by the English Department, a Book Fair was held in our auditorium for the interest of us all. lt was with great delight we browsed around the stage trying to appear intelligent, as we looked at the many books. As our second year came to a close, we felt like old-timers as we went through the procedure of the last week of school. Although we had no memories of a boatride in our second year, we cherishedthose of the new friends we made and old ones met. As we left our new home for the summer, we looked to our future time at Roosevelt as more promising to ourselves and our school. Although extra-curricular activities had not yet been resumed, hope was in sight and Leo Scher and Ray Klein were heading the newly elected G.O. council. At the close of our fifth term, one of our teachers, Mr. Henry Saltman, received an award for saving a boy's life., Autumn was turning everything orange and red and we were now entering our sixth term. Extra-curricular activities were once again in progress and a new G.O. council, headed by Milton Markowitz and George Lazarowitz, was elected. We were all glad to see our newly organized basketball team on the court. The girls' swimming team and boys' track team were also organized. ln order to help the G.O. get funds, we sold magazines, the profits of which were used to provide uniforms and equipment for clubs. Symbolic of our times at Roosevelt, for students and teachers alike, and a thought for things to us in this poem. lNot originalll Life is sweet just because of the friends we've made, And the things in common we share, We want to live on not because of ourselves, But because of the people who care Its giving and doing for somebody else On that all life's splendor depends, The joy of the world when you've summed it all up, ls found in the making of friends.
