Life wifhin fhe walls of fhis maiesfic sancfuary of knowledge, is a new experience for a group of new, lively sfudenfs. Time Marches On! ! ! ln I939 fhese growing youngsfers begin feeling af home in fheir new school. ln facf fhe roufine of high school life becomes a vifal parf of our daily exisfence. In fhe disfanf horizon, furbulenf, dark clouds gafher over Europe. Time Marches On! l ! l940 marks fhe invasion of Roosevelf High, a minufe arsenal of democracy, by refugees in whose eyes are reflecfed fhe misery of war-forn Europe. War falk has repercussions even in our own classrooms. Time Marches On! l l l94l finds our counfry, our schools, war-conscious. The deafhly specfre of war has succeeded in casfing ifs grim shadow also over fhe happiness of our beloved nafion and we are realizing fhaf we are headed probably for fhe darkesf period of our generafion. Time Marches On! ! ! l942 gives a flaffering porfraif of fhe once-awkward youngsfers, now blooming info charming, courfeous, young men and women. When we firsf enfered fhis insfifufion, our childish menfalify did nof permif us fo see beyond a limifed horizon, and we merely sef gradua- fion as our goal. Today, affer four years, fhe goal for which we sfrove has been reached. Our efforfs are finally crowned by success! Buf whaf now? Shall we confinue in fhe pursuif of knowledge or shall we choose a career in some ofher field? Be if one or fhe ofher, we are, neverfheless confronfed wifh one of fhe mosf difficulf fasks ever handed down fo a new generafion. ln all our sfruggles, successes and failures we shall always look back wifh pleasure fo our dear, old Alma Mafer. The music is powerful, buT lilTing. Men, The world over, march in Time To The music of The drum and bugle. Such is The music of The manl known as The March King, The greaT John Philip Sousa. ln This couhTry, such marches as STars and STripes Forever and Hail To The Chief keep our boys' TeeT in sTep. Their courage is high as They leave Their homes. BUT-alThough They do noT smile as Their hearTs beaT in rhyThm wiTh The drum, Their ThoughTs are of vicTory and oT a happy TuTure. The marTial sTrain, wiTh iTs maiesTic inspiring rhyThm, is making Their blood Tlow more hoTly, Their courage and TaiTh in The TuTure burn more Tiercely. BuT-Thel Time will come when men will lay down Their arms and TyranTs will cease To rule. Then we shall have music! We shall hear a new music! lT will be The music oT peace, of courage, of The dreams come True, and desires Tulfilled. This music will be as lilTing as a Viennese vfalTz, or a Cole PorTer melody, as sparkling as a gypsy dance, and as scinTillaTing as The music of our SouTh American neighbors. ,IT will beaT wiTh a rhyThm as sTrong and as vibranT as The pulse of The men and women who will make The world a place of peace. And, under all iTs moods There will be a sTeady Throb. As George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue resounds wiTh The pulsaTion of a greaT ciTy and iTs inhabiTanTs, This will resound wiTh a similar Throb- bing. The Throb will be The pounding oT giganTic machines, noT operaTing Tor The desTrucTion oT mankind, buT Tor iTs beneTiT. IT will be The consTrucTion of mighTy dams and reservoirs Tor power, noT oT Tyranny buT of liberTy. lT will be The inner Throb in a man, as he labors To supporT himself and his Tamily, noT a laruTal masTer. IT will be The Throb of men's hearTs giving Thanks Tor peace and freedom. IT will be The Throb oT a joyous, Thankful world.
