CHANDLER CDD-7173 HStandby - - - One Gun, OneSalvo - - --Plot Shoot . A On 22 March 1971, the. USS THEODORE E. CHANDLER CDD-7171 was providing vital Naval Gunfire Support to Free World Forces in the Republic of Vietnam, yet, while the firing of the guns was the priority mission of the day, another significant event was in the making. The CHANDLER was celebrating her Silver Anniversary as an active unit of the U... S. Pacific Fleet-ftwenty-five years of distinguished service encompassing three wars. Although the grueling demands of the gunline left little time for an appropriate celebration, preparations for a fitting birthday party continued throughout the day. That night the officers and crew were treated to a turkey dinner complete with all the trimmings, including a huge two-layer birthday cake. The food quickly disappeared as crewmembers applied themselves in typical Navy fashion. When the time came for dessert, the Captain, Commander Robert E. Connally, U. S. Navy, of Manasquan, New Jersey, sliced and served the cake. After everyone had been served, the Captain read the following congratulatory message from the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral E. Ri. Zumwalt, Jr.: Anniversary Greetings. I take great pleasure in extending best wishes to Captain Connally and all hands who will observe the 25th anniversary of THEODORE E. CHANDLER,s commis- sioning. This memorable occasion is a tribute to the dedication and professionalism of all those who have served in her over the years. Your recent operations in the Western Pacific were typical of your performance as a first line member of the Navy team. My best wishes for continued success.H Next, highlights of the CHANDLER's history were enumerated. All hands shared a feeling of pride knowing that they had contributed in some small measure to her honorable record. The CHANDLER's record has been excellent. For 25 years she has continuously met her commitments in peace or war. She has served in the Korean Conflict, been assigned to overseas duty in Japan on two occasions, and made numerous deployments to the Western Pacific in support of the allied effort in the Republic of Vietnam. She has taken direct hits from hostile fire and returned to unleash devastating gunfire of her own. She has participated in many fleet exercises and has been used for training tomorrow's leaders during several Midshipman cruises. Above all, she has proven to be versatile, reliable, and an extremely valuable asset to both the U. S. FIRST and SEVENTH Fleets. The brief respite from the rigors of the gunline ended all too soon for the crew when a call for fire mission interrupted the celebration. Quickly, the gun mounts were remanned andthe CHANDLER was ready to begin her twenty-sixth year of service as a member ofthe Pacific Fleet. HStandby - - - One Gun, One Salvo -- - - Plot Shootn.
