Track Track started directly after the State Basketball Tournament with 15 boys turning out. Five freshmen dropped out during the first part of the season leaving the following track team: Jim Barker, Charles Smith, Jim Weber, Loy Mercer, Jerry Cordis, Melvin Strunk, Ted Weber, Myron Barnes, Ronnie Blauvelt and Gordon Harrell. We have three returning letter men in Jerry Cordis, Jim Barker, Charles Smith and Jim Weber. Jim Weber lettered at Gandy last year. At the end of six weeks, with two meets under our belt, the team shaped up with Jim Barker and Melvin Strunk in the 440 yard dash, Charles Smith and Gor- don Harrell in the 880 yard rung Loy Mercer in the low hurdlesg Jerry Cordis and Ted Weber in the 100 yard dash, Jim Barker and Ted Weber in the 200 yard dash, Ronnie Blauvelt an Myron Barnes in the mile run. The mile relay teams consisted of Melvin Strunk, Charles Smith, Jim Weber, Jim Barker. The 880 yard relay team consisted of Jerry Cordis, Loy Mercer, Gordon I-Darrell and Ted Weber. In the field events we had Cordis and Mercer in the shotputg Jim Weber and Jim Barker in the discus throwg Jim Weber and Loy Mercer in the high jump, Jim Weber and Melvin Strunk in the broad jump, and Melvin Strunk and Gordon Har- rell in the pole vault. At the Ord Invitational Meet Jim Weber tied with three others for 3rd, 4th and 5th place in the h-igh jump. At the Conference meet at Mullen fthe 'team placed third, Jim Weber tied with two others for fourth in the discus throw. Jimi Barker tied for first place in the 440 yard dlash. Melvin Strunk placed se- cond in the 60 yard high hurdles. Ronnie Blauvelt placed fourth in the mile run. The mile relay team won the event with a record time of 412.2. The 880 yard relay team placed fourth. At the time we went to press we still had a quadrangular meet at Mullen, the district meet at Ord, and twe hope! the state meet at Lincoln.
