The History of the Class of 1954 On September 4th, 1950, eight meek, bewildered, freshmen walked into -the assemb- 'ly hallg 'high school was being held in the court house in those days. They were James Barker, Loy Dean Mercer, Charles Smith, Bob Arnholt, Hazel Florea, Alice Ann Knepper, Mfadaline Bryant, and Walter MacDonald. The freshman -and sophomore classes were combined and we had' Mrs. Miller as our sponsor. The most exciming thing that happened to us that year was the initiation which was held in the hay- loft of Harold Robinsons barn. The seniors gave us a treat of watermelon when the in- itiation was over. The next year Alice Ann Knepper moved to Beaver Crossing, Nebraska where she is finishing her high school education this year. Bob Arnholt started his sophomore year of high school at Bassett, Nebraska. He is a senior there this year. Oveta Cloe start- ed with our class, brit after ia few weeks she went to Lincoln to go to school. Walter MacDonald dropped out of school during the year and entered the service for Uncle Slam. Carol Ewolrdt, who had been attending the Hyannis high school for her fresh- man year, and JomAnna Nelson, who had attended Ansley high school, came to Thed- ford to start the 10th grade. Mr. Carl Smith was our class sponsor and the following our officers: President--Loy D. Mercerg Vice President-Carol Ewoldtig Secretary- JoAnna Nelson: Treasurer-I-llazel Florea, Student Council Memlbers4-Loy Mercer and Hazel Florea. The junior year of the clam of 1954 began in the long awaited new High Scl-1001 buildin-g. The following memlbers enjoyed that privilege: Loy Mercer, James Barker, Charles Smith, Hazel Florea, Carol Ewoldt, Madeline Bryant, JoAnna Nelson, and Mary Howard. The last three members dropped out of school the second semester. We chose Mr. Shipman for our sponsor and elected the following officers: President- Hrazel Florea, Vice-President-Charles Smithg Secretary-Loy Dean Mercerg Trea- surer-JoAnn-a Nelsorig Student Council Members-Hazel Florea, Loy D. Mercer, and Carol Ewoldt. We had a lot of 'fun putting on our junior play, Just Ducky , after which 'there was a 'box-supper. All of the members of the class participated in the activities of the high school, but our next BIG event as a class was the Junior-Senior Banquet. Since this was the first J unior-Senior Banquet held in the gym of our new high school, we spent days, yes weeks, in planning for the banquet and put much time and elfort in decorating. The members of the senior class of 1954 are: Loy Dean Mercer, James Barker, James Weber, Charles Smith, Hazel Florea, and Carol Ewoldt. James Weber had been attending the Logan County High School. We chose maroon and gold for our class colors and: the doulble- yellow rose for our class Itlower. Our cl-ass moftto is, There is power in cooperation. I For Baccalureate, May 16th, 'and Comrnencement, May 19th, we wore maroon gowns and caps with maroon and gold tassels.
