Mercer, Theafora, Nebraska t As long as much of Amerf ica's best cattle range is fre- quently subjected' to raging blizzards, stirrup deep snow with the mercury trying to hide in the bulb, Highland popularity will continue to soar. There is not anyway to ward off those climatic con- ditions' consequently, for more comfort, llesure and profit, beef ralsers need to breed a hardler -strain of cattle that can .take it. The easiest, quickest and best way to get that job done is to infuse Highland blood into thc herds already there. Oth- ers have done it, are doing it. Why not you? Hardiness plays a mighty important role in cattle rais- ing throughout America. Even in the tempeiate areas. char- acterlstls sudden changes in weather conditions affect cat- tle tremendously, causing them to hump and shiver, or seek shelter where there is little or no feed or forage. Not so, the Highlander! These cattle will be out there pit- ching, finding provender where ordinary cattle would- n't even look for it-keeping fit and making .money for their owner. They were James Barker, Loy Dean Mercer, Charles Smith, Bob Arnholt, Hazel Florea, Alice Ann Knepper, Mfadaline Bryant, and Walter MacDonald. The freshman -and sophomore classes were combined and we had' Mrs. Miller as our sponsor. The most exciming thing that happened to us that year was the initiation which was held in the hay- loft of Harold Robinsons barn. The seniors gave us a treat of watermelon when the in- itiation was over. The next year Alice Ann Knepper moved to Beaver Crossing, Nebraska where she is finishing her high school education this year. Bob Arnholt started his sophomore year of high school at Bassett, Nebraska. He is a senior there this year. Oveta Cloe start- ed with our class, brit after ia few weeks she went to Lincoln to go to school. Walter MacDonald dropped out of school during the year and entered the service for Uncle Slam. Carol Ewolrdt, who had been attending the Hyannis high school for her fresh- man year, and JomAnna Nelson, who had attended Ansley high school, came to Thed- ford to start the 10th grade. Mr. Carl Smith was our class sponsor and the following our officers: President--Loy D. Mercerg Vice President-Carol Ewoldtig Secretary- JoAnna Nelson: Treasurer-I-llazel Florea, Student Council Memlbers4-Loy Mercer and Hazel Florea. The junior year of the clam of 1954 began in the long awaited new High Scl-1001 buildin-g. The following memlbers enjoyed that privilege: Loy Mercer, James Barker, Charles Smith, Hazel Florea, Carol Ewoldt, Madeline Bryant, JoAnna Nelson, and Mary Howard. The last three members dropped out of school the second semester. We chose Mr. Shipman for our sponsor and elected the following officers: President- Hrazel Florea, Vice-President-Charles Smithg Secretary-Loy Dean Mercerg Trea- surer-JoAnn-a Nelsorig Student Council Members-Hazel Florea, Loy D. Mercer, and Carol Ewoldt. We had a lot of 'fun putting on our junior play, Just Ducky , after which 'there was a 'box-supper. All of the members of the class participated in the activities of the high school, but our next BIG event as a class was the Junior-Senior Banquet. Since this was the first J unior-Senior Banquet held in the gym of our new high school, we spent days, yes weeks, in planning for the banquet and put much time and elfort in decorating. The members of the senior class of 1954 are: Loy Dean Mercer, James Barker, James Weber, Charles Smith, Hazel Florea, and Carol Ewoldt. James Weber had been attending the Logan County High School. We chose maroon and gold for our class colors and: the doulble- yellow rose for our class Itlower. Our cl-ass moftto is, There is power in cooperation. I For Baccalureate, May 16th, 'and Comrnencement, May 19th, we wore maroon gowns and caps with maroon and gold tassels. Class Prophecy We find ourselves gathered at T. C. H. S. in the year of 1964. 'Tis the loyal -and dig- nified class of '54, We look about to see if we are all present, no, someone is missing. It must be James Barker, little Jimmie . We see 'the clouds--iof dvustl--part and he arrives in his super, three cylinder, 12 passenger, customized, hot-rod It seems that Jake is now married and has several children. ,Ten to be exact. Now dhildren, let's all belhiave ourselves properly, this from MIS. Miller, our ex-sponsor, who is still quite sprritely and the 'terror of the freshmen. Charles Smith takes the rostrum and some order is restored. Charles has greyed slightly, due to worries over his ranch. His experiences with sharp dealers in high school have erraibledl Him to become a success. At the far end of tfne table we spy Hazel Florea, looking very prim and Hazel is teaching school for a career and has not had time for marriage. tConfitlen't- i-ally, she has her eye on the handsome young Sfupintendentl 'Do Haze1's right we come ufpon big Jim Weber. He is occupying his share, his FULL share, of the gathering. Mudh to our surprise he has become a used car and junk dealer. He has a large family I six foot and overl. His wife is not with him and we p suspect she is a victim .of overwork. Carol Ewoldt QMIS. Dubsl is the happy wife of a welleto-do rancher. We notice thuat the liife of 'the modern housewife is too hard. It tires one so to push buttons all day. Oh yes! There's Mercer over in the corner. He is wearing the same suit he graduated in. lIt has been let out a little around the waist.l He has earned htirnself a reputation for being miserly and his a. great deal richer than he lets on. He is driving a King Midget merely because it uses less gas than most models. He has never married! dlue to a deep-seated conviction that he ca.n't afford it As we cast one last look around we all join in the memory filled yell- 'Ray for the class of '54. Class Will We the senior class of 1954 do make this our last will and testament as follows: Loy Dean. Mercer wills his short hair cut to Dorothy Miller and his head of hair to Gorden Harrell. Jim Weber wills his height to Allen Jameson. Hazel Florea wills 'all her old boy friends to Mary Ann. She said, I have to lccep them around. Charles Smith wills his tradiing 'ability to Lula Anthony, and his physique to Myron Barns. Carol Ewoldt wills her driving ability to Ted Weber and Larry Jameson. - Jim Barker wills his correspondence courses to Lynn Schwier, and his inherent c-lumsiness 'to Miss Breck. Mrs. Miller hereby makes the following disposition of her valuable property. 1. After mudh discussion and arguing the students finally agreed to pay for the suits as thy had the electric seore board the year before. Practice started the first day of school with 'eleven players coming out. After two weeks of fundamentals and calisthenics we played our first game under the lights at Stapleton. Eeven though this was the first football game any of the Tro- jan squad had ever pllayed and the first a lot of them had ever seen, we managed to make one touchdown and stopped all but one of Stapletons conversion attempts. As Stapleton at tihat time was the top teamin the state tlhe students didn't feel too bad about the loss. Gathering experience as they went along the Gridiron squad went on to complete a hard foughft season of one win and five losses. 'Ihe main handicap to tihe team was the lack of subs-tittutes. We hope to see more players reporting out for football next year and expect a more successful season. Oponentn Stapleton 52 Hyannis 31 -LETTER. On September 23rd a representative from Lincoln who works for a company which makes band instruments, came to Thomas County High School to show us some band instruments. The parents as well as students were invited to see- the 'band demon- stration and several of the students got new instruments. During the football season the band , under the direction of Miss Breck, went down to the football field and played for home games. On November 16th the band gave a Smorgasbord and a band concert. The stu- dents sold tickets for tfhis. The proceeds were put in the band fund which was set aside for band uniforms. Work is being done by several individuals and small groups on solos and other musical numbers which they plan to take to the Sandhill Music Festival at Mullen on March 31.
