ll0MEUOMl G THE SULLIVANS BELIEVES SHE SET AN ENGINEERING RECORD A modern-day example of engineering prowess is believed by her crew to have been established by USS THE SULLIVANS QDD 537Q. CDR. A. P. SCOTT, Com- manding Officer of the ship which just com- pleted a world cruise, including several months of combat off Korea, points with pride to the fact that USS THE SULLIVANS steamed over 54,000 miles during 217 days of almost continuous operation and accomplished all missions. At high or low speeds, in temperatures as low as 18 degrees and as high as 120 de- grees, there was always power when needed, Commander SCOTT said. The experience level of the engineering division was critical when the ship departed from the United States on 6 September 1952,,' Commander SCOTT added, but through pride in their work, training, and determination, as well as 'ingenuity, the men advanced in rate and experience. Other minor records which were also established while chalking up the 54,000 mile engineering operations record are: 1. Had no major or minor machinery derangements or breakdowns requiring out- side assistance. 2. Never missed a sailing schedule. 3. Manufactured 2,259,000 gallons of water, and NEVER went on water hours . . . even when in the tropics. 4. Rated one MM2, nine MMS, one BTI, one BT2, nine BT3, one EM2, two EM3, one EN3, one MR3, and one ME2. 5. Minimum of disciplinary cases fonly 10 Captains masts, low in interdepartmental competitionj. ' R 6. Never lost the electrical load. 7. Refueled 38 times, 18 of them under- way, and never ran over the fuel tanks. As THE SULLIVANS men say with mixed feeling, She isn't much for liberty, but she is a steamer. Are the natives friendly in this port??
