YESTERDAYS SENIOR HISTORY The Plains area was the place of the birth of MANY OF THEMEMBERS OF THE PRESENT SENIOR CLASS DUR- ING THE YEARS 19 7 OR 1 9 J-S • FROM THAT TIME OUR PARENTS CARESSED AND GUI 0 ED US UNTIL WE REACHED THE AGE TO ENTER SCHOOL. Of THE PRESENT SENIORS, SHEILAXX Sheila Buck, Jane Coon, David Cullison, Carol Golds- berry, Carla McDonald, Blaine Michael, Roger Peyton, Larry Platt, Dennis Six, Ralph Six, Davis Smith, James Wallace, Sherrie Wilson, Terry Wilson, and 'William Winner started the first steps of education IN THE FIRST GRADE OF THE PLAINS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. Under the guidance of our respected elementary teachers, Mrs. Mabel Hqwell and Mrs. Glenna Weatherby, secono grade; Mrs. Emma Beckley, third grade; Miss Alta Cooper, fourth grade; Miss Irene Elliott, fifth grade; and Miss Elva Cooper, sixth grade; we were taught the basic fundamentals in education and were helped in reach- ing ADOLESCENCE. AMONG THE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES IN WHICH WE PARTICIPATED WERE A Mothers’ Day tea, the baking of bread, a hobby show, a science exhibit, and a tour OF A DAIRY FARM. At THE END CF OUR SIXTH GRADE YEAR, WE TOOK WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS A BIG STEP . OUR CLASS WALKED ACROSS THE ROAD, LOOKED UP AT THE BIG BUILDING AND THEN ENTERED THE PLACE TO BE HOME FOR THE FOLLOWING SIX YEARS. OUR ACADEMIC SUBJECTS INCLUOED SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, ENGLISH, FOREIGN LANGUAGES, BUSINESS EDUCATION, INDUSTRIAL ARTS, HOME ECONOMICS, HISTORY, G EOGRAPHY, ANO GOVERNMENT. AS WE PROGRESSED STEP BY STEP WE PARTICIPATED IN VARIOUS ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS THE CONCERT AND MARCHING BANO, VOCAL MUSIC, CLASS PLAYS, VARIOUS ATHLETICS, MERIT AWARDS, LIBRARY SERVICE, STUOENT COUNCIL, ATHENS COUNTY HONOR SOCIETY, FUTURE HOME- MAKERS of America, the Silver Savings Bank, the year book publication, a pep club, AND A CAMERA CLUB. With each step we developed important traits such as responsibility, kindness, HONESTY, AND C0OP ER ATI ON--ALL OF WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL IN LIFE IN ORDER TO GROW. In concluding, we wish to recognize our parents; members of the present and previous Boaros of Education; Mr. H. W. Humphrey, local administrator, who also taught industrial arts; Mr. Marion Wood, principal, and instructor in physical . EDUCATION AND SCIENCE. THERE WAS Mr. RICHARD SHOEMAKER, WHO ALONG WITH TEACHING MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE WAS OUR GUIDANCE CCUNCELOR AND BUS DRIVER; MRS. Anna ROSE, WHC EDUCATED US IN THE BUSINESS AREA AND SUPERVISED THE SILVER SAVINGS BANK AND YEAR BOOK PUBLICATION. THERE WAS Mr. ROBERT BURSON AND Mr. GERALD INBOOY, WHO TAUGHT HISTORY AND COACHED. FOR VOCAL MUSIC WE HAD MRS. MARGUERITE FRANK, Mrs. Judith Mathews, and Mrs. Grace Hoffman. We learned art from Mrs. Vernah Gardner. For English we had Mr. Alfred Gendernalik, Mrs. Cherrye Lucas, and Mrs. Gladys Pierce. Directing the band were Mr. E. G. Horsky and Mr. Thomas Stubbs. Mr. Ray- mond Lee, Mrs. Adda Maccombs, and Mrs. Karen Wagner all taught mathematics at DIFFERENT YEARS.
