STEPS TOWARD TOMORROW Published by The Year Book Staff The Plains High School The Athens City School District The Plains, Ohio VIEWS OF The Plains area was once farm land; then, largely due to THE COAL MINING INDUSTRY, IT GREW IN POPULACE. EvEN YET THIS IS A SMALL UNINCORPORATED VILLAGE. THERE ARE A FEW SMALL BUSI- NESS ESTABLISHMENTS, THE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING--WHICH EVIDENCES A FRONT MARKING OF !,1 922 --T HE COMMUNITY-SUPPORTED FIRE DEPART- MENT, TWO MAJOR CHURCHES, ALL LOCATED ON THE MANY NARROW STREETS. Almost every person in the neighborhood is acquainted with all THE OTHER PEOPLE, INCLUDING THEIR HABITS, THEIR ILLS, AND THEIR PETS . Now THE TIME.HAS COME WHEN The PLAINS WILL SOON EXPERIENCE ITS GREATEST EXPANSION. THIS WILL BE BROUGHT ACOUT LARGELY AS A RESULT OF A NEW HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH WILL COST APPROX I MAT ELY §2,225,000, WHICH WILL BE BOUND BY STATE ROUTE ThIRTY-THR EE , Johnson Road, and McDonald Road. This structure will house the HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF THE PRESENT ATHENS, ChAUNCEY, AND The Plains High Schools. This is to be one of the most mooern, CULTURAL, AND BEAUTIFUL HIGH SCHOOLS IN OHIO. THERE STUDENTS WILL HAVE FAR GREATER EDUCATIONAL ADVANTAGES. Standing on the sixty-two acre plot and looking toward Athens AT LEF T is State Route Thirty-three, beyond farm pond is a cemetery At right and horizontal is Johnson Road —looking easterly TOMORROW WHEN WE GLANCE OUT THE WINDOWS STROLL DOWN THE WALKS OR RIDE THE SCHOOL BUS In traveling North or South on the major ano eour-lano high- way, ONE WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THE BUILDING FROM A GREAT DISTANCE. It will be on the knoll-tops from where one may view the superb SCENES OF CULTIVATED FIELDS, KlLMER'S TREES, GOO'S HILLS, AND lighted Athens. Residents anticipate many, many citizens to migrate to this AREA, AND MORE AND LARGER BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENTS TO BE CONSTRUCTED The time is here for transformation from a little place to a modern city. Someoay one may affectionately say, I'd UK! to meet that OLD GANG OF MINE, OR I REMEMBER WHEN .... At the left is Johnson Road and in the left d is the Cottingham Mound. With each step we developed important traits such as responsibility, kindness, HONESTY, AND C0OP ER ATI ON--ALL OF WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL IN LIFE IN ORDER TO GROW. Those students who led our class were seventh—president, Jane Coon; vice presi- dent, Elizabeth Scott; secretary, Carla McDonald; news reporter. Mr• DAVID STRICKLIN AND Mr. HERSHEL BuRKE COACHED IN OUR EARLY YEARS • Historian’s Committee Constance Cain Elizabeth Scott James Wallace PHILOSOPHY We believe that every boy and girl in The Plains School is, potentially, a fine citizen, an EFFICIENT MEMBER OF SOME VOCATION, AN INTELLIGENT AND WORTHY MEMBER OF A FAMILY, AN INDIVIDUAL WHO KNOWS AND PRACTICES ALL THE RULES NECESSARY FOR GOOD HEALTH, A PERSON WITH VARIED AVOCAT IONAL INT- ERESTS, AND ABOVE ALL, ONE WITH A STERLING CHAR- ACTER . In oroer to develop these potentialities into REALITIES IT IS OUR TASK, AS A SCHOOL SYSTEM, TO PROVIDE AN ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH ALL STUDENTS WILL MEET SITUATIONS REQUIRING CERTAIN AND DEFINITE KNOWLEDGES, HABITS, SKILLS, ATTITUDES, AND APPRE- CIATIONS. We believe the aims as set up unoer the ABOVE HEADINGS SHOULD BE DETERMINED BY THE NEEOS OF OUR COMMUNITY, AND IN ORDER TO ATTAIN THESE OBJECTIVES IT IS NECESSARY TO PROVIDE EXPERIENCES THAT WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO THINK ANO ACT AS IN- DIVIDUALS AND YET WORK HARMONIOUSLY WITH OTHERS. We feel that by combining the good of the SO-CALLED FORMAL TYPE OF EDUCATION WITH THE TESTED AND PROVEN OF THE PROGRESSIVE SCHOOL, WE, AS TEA- CHERS CAN BEST AIO OUR STUDENTS, SUGGEST TO THEM, GUIDE THEM, AND ABOVE ALL, INSPIRE THEM TOWARD THAT POTENTIALITY, A FINE CHARACTER WHO CAN EFFI- CIENTLY LIVE IN THIS UNCERTAIN ANO COMPLEX SOCIETY.
