A review of the happy experiences of a people who at dusk were only students, but at dawn will be the citizens of tomorrow Published by The Senior Class of The Plains High School The Plains, Ohio Preface This publication, DAWN TO EUSK, illustrates the memorable days lived at The Plains High School. One sees the dawn of creativeness and the dawn of eager- ness in the facial expressions of the students. One sees them as they participate in the extra-curricular activities, as they recite in the classrooms, and as they function individually. One sees students as underclassmen, and further yet, others as Seniors who are nearing the dusk of their school days. And still further, one sees the administrative personnel who teach and guide these citizens of tomorrow. May the students of The Plains High School go forth to enjoy the dawn of a new day. As these bright stars enter into life, may few, if any, fall; but instead, may the entire personnel of our school be substantial meteors and reflect the learning of the teen- age level. Their philosophies will penetrate various societies. May the students of our high school light the path of life, promote the welfare of mankind, and experience happy lives throughout eternity. To these ends may they be guided by the Supreme Ray of Light. ii I Pledge Allegiance... Activities Guardians of our Flag Our Creed I believe in The Plains High School; in its traditions and achievements; and in its continued growth and service• In this belief, I will endeavor: To develop character by being honest, ethical, moral, dependable, and courageous; To display courtesy, and respect the rights of others, delving into both viewpoints of any situation and to cooperate; To achieve excellence in scholastic attainment; To value mental and physical health; To use my leisure time in constructive recreational and cultural activities. All this to the end that I may promote a worthwhile life under divine guidance. Not only will I uphold these policies, but I shall use my influence to lead others correctly. 2 Anxious for the Bell SUMMER 1959 Planning the Schedule Acquiring Knowledge of Punctuation Introducing Keys to Our Adults Dispensing the Plastics 3 ■Martha McDonald Contestant for Queen at the Parade of the Hills Brenda Wallace Contestant for Queen at J-T Fall Festival Queens and Kings Sitting: Eugene Brundige, Josephine Vessalo, Julia Michael, Gregory Michael. Fran the usual eight- pound bundle, we slowly grew, inch by inch, size by size, until we reached the chronological age when we could attend the first grade at The Plains Elementary School. In that grade, there were twenty-two of us who are still members of our class; they are, Danny Adams, Louella Brooks, Robert Bryan, Larry Caler.dine, Dale Carr, Sue Coon, Basil Cullison, Robert Davis, Larry Horn, Edward Hornsby, Linda Koon, Martha McDonald, Karen Michael, Ralph Porter, Janice Rowland, Sheila Rutter, James Six, Rhea Smith, Robert Sofronko, Joseph Vessalo, Terry Walbum, and Kay Whetstone. The instructors who helped us to see the light in those years were (first grade) Mrs. Wilma Darnell, Mrs. Virginia Hayes; (second grade) Mrs. Camilla Weisenbach, Mrs. Frances Higgins; (third grade) Mrs. E!mina Beckley, Mrs. Eleanor Cummings; (fourth grade) Miss Alta Cooper, Mrs. Eleanor Cummir.gs; (fifth grade) Miss Irene Elliott, Mrs. Helen Paige; and (sixth grade) Miss Elva Cooper, Miss Irene Elliott. Under their guidance we learned to read, to write, to figure, and to complete numerous constructive activities. Our class visited the Brooks Shoe Factory at elsonville, and the Museum at Marietta. The group sponsored a hobby display and a pet show. We were guests at a tea; and then on another occasion, we had a tea for a younger group. All of us enjoyed picnics and parties, too. In our last year in the elemen- tary grades, we elected class officers and learned other phases of parliamentary procedure. We ceremoniously performed farewell exercises at the close of the sixth year. In those grades, Roger Porter and Sharon Peyton were added to our membership • Just turning teen-agers, we proudly strutted into the high school building. As we observed the older high school students, we felt like small children again. Here we had a different teacher for each subject. We hurried from English class to history class—from room to room. During our high school years, we elected the following officers; 9th, Roger Porter, presi- dent; Maurice Kittle, vice-president; Martha McDonald, secretary-treasurer; and Kay Whetstone, news reporter; 10th, Maurice Kittle, president; Donald Strole, vice-president; Kay Whetstone, secretary; Sue Coon, treasurer; and Linda Koon, news reporter; 11th, Donald Strole, president; Sue Coon, vice-president; Martha McDonald, secretary; Kay Whetstone, treasurer; and Michael Thompson, news reporter; 12th, Donald Strole, president; Sharon Sharpe, vice-president, Linda Koon, secretary; Sharon Peyton, treasurer; and Sue Coon, news reporter. Our members participated in many activities in addition to attending their regular classes. This year Roger Porter is the Student Council President, and last year Sue Coon was Student Council Secretary. Outstanding students were awarded merit pins, Athens County Honor Society membership, and perfect attendance certificates. Members of our class were active in the Future Homemakers of America, Latin Club, Vocal Groups, Concert and Marching Band, Prince of Peace Contests, and the Senior Play. Members were also on the football team, the basketball team, and the baseball team. The Homecoming Queen this year is Sharon Sharpe. Janice Rowland, Linda Koon, and Brenda Wallace are varsity cheerleaders. Previously, in our junior high days, Martha McDonald, Brenda Wallace, and Linda Koon represented us as cheerleaders. Everyone buzzed with money-making ideas to finance our trip to Washington. Amid all the activities, a few of us were slated for detention from time to time. In concluding, we wish to recognize the members of our Board of Education, our Executive Head, Mr. H. W. Humphrey, and our instructors: Mr. Robert Burson, Miss Beryl Cone, Miss Louise Diver, Mr. Frank Eschelman, Mrs. Vernah Gardner, Mr. E. G. Horsky, Mr. Alexander Lewis, Mrs. Adda Macccmbs, Mrs. Anna Rose, Mr. Richard Shoemaker, and Mr. Marion Wood, all of whom have so conscientiously guided us these years. The dusk of our school life is here and we are happily looking forward to the approach of a new dawn—a dawn which will bring us many wonderful and pleasant experiences. It is our desire to enter this vast world and unknown universe to serve humanity as substantial citizens tomorrow.
