“Cias Wxstoro, A group of vide eyed and rather frightened children, ve were assembled in September 1940 in the first grade class room of The Plains Schools Under the guidance of our teacher. Miss Gochnaner, ve conquered our first scholastic barrier—learning to read. We made flover boxes, carefully selected the seeds to be planted, and then spent many hours caring for the flovers and veeds that grev Ve vere then ready for second grade: and after a brief vacation ve re- ported to Miss Sproul It vas this year that ve visited Mrs. Luckado to see some of her Indian products Under the sponsorship of Miss Sproul ve gave our ovn imitation of The Hev York Philharmonic, vhich sounded more like Spike Jones. Our final year in the primary department began vith Miss Walstrom taking us on an excursion trip to the city of Athens Ve constructed a post office and sold defense stamps to add our bit to the defense effort Ve also built a doll house and took it to the Children1 s Home, vhere ve exchanged it for the mmps Our fourth year of school found us facing the questionable privilege of tramping up and dovn the grade school steps several times daily This year, after Miss Alta Cooper had in- structed us in Parlimentary Procedures, ve elected officers. And by the end of the year ve had added multiplication tables to our growing list of scholastic accomplishments The follow- ing year ve met vith Miss Elliott, who helped us make shadov puppets vith vhich to entertain the other students Also we gave a play and read stories to those who could read even less ablely than ve Miss Siva Cooper took us under her wings in the sixth grade. Ve added a large sum of money to the reoreation fund through a paper drive. Christmas time found us ng part in the Christmas pageant. Ve concluded our elementary school life vith a commencement exercise When ve crossed the street to assume the dignity and obligations of Junior high school, ve were met by Mrs. Maccombs, who was succeeded by Mr. Smith in the seventh grade. Mr Calvin introduced us to shop, and Mr. Swearingen presented the physical education to us Though noisy in the assemblies ve vere honored scholastically Ve vere also honored when Vaughn Howard and Janet Stalnaker vere elected Prince and Princess at the Tall festival. Miss Cone held the reins during our eighth year, vith Mr. Davis over all of us In spite of all the activities, the parties, the outings, and the problems, ve came to graduation day Mr Haynes, superin- tendent of the Athens County Schools, vas our guest speaker. During our first year as high school students, ve became acquainted vith Mrs Skaith, our advisor, who was later replaced by Mrs. Eddy. Mr Zednick, a former collegiate wrestler. Join- ed the faculty as coach and shop teacher Mr Evans began an instrumental music program vith vonderful ideas for a band Ve concluded the year vith a velner roast Mr Stauffer stepped upon the scene as our advisor in the tenth grade Miss Baker Joined the staff to teach vocal music and Mr. Humphrey assumed the duties as the school head We were taught banking and effi- ciency by Mrs Hose In the eleventh grade, Mr Stauffer helped us sell emblem tags, sponser programs, and a dance to replenish our fund Jon Tipton Elaine Swank vere elected King and Queen. Mr Wood Joined us this year as physical education instructor This vas a busy year as ve participated in assemblies, programs, a minstrel, and ve sponsored a Junior-Senior banquet and dance And now ve have reached our senior year of school Mr Evans surprised and pleased us by becoming our class advisor. This year, Mr Shoemaker Joined the faculty as a social science teacher, Ve started the year vith a big bang by getting into many activities, particularly the band shows and an operetta Before Christmas we sold cards and stationery. Quinton Meek and Janet Stalnaker were elected Prince and Princess at the Tall festival
