PROLOGUE Park School is a complex world of all sorts of people. In it everyone gains some- thing in addition to scholastic achievement: a knowledge of his fellows sprung from the informality of Park. Here lies the most diversified and liberal education possi- ble, for each person has some new and special gift, either familiar or strange, to do- nate to our world. Individuality reigns supreme, democracy flourishes in this tiny corner of a bountiful fatherland-a tiny replica of that world-famed, yet little- known culture, that state of mind and quality of action characteristic of America which is so little understood by those who do not come in contact with it. One of the best qualified people to describe it, we feel, is Carl Sandburg, noted for his portrayal of the great and tiny daily incidents occurring over the broad expanse of our continent. He states that it is the people, all shapes, sizes and varieties-it is the people who make this country what it is. Of these, Sandburg writes, as we would of the people at Park. The people tr a myth an ahstraetzon And what myth would you put zn place of the people? And what ahstractzon would you exchange for thu one? And when has ereatzve man not tozled deep zn myth?
