Our class came back, increased in number by one, and set a firm foot forward to do our best in this-our last year at Morgan. The magazine campaign started out pretty well but our interest in the Cotillion and the yearbook took up so much of our time that we-surprisingly-ended up last and put on the magazine party. After this was over and the talk of all the fun everyone had had died down we began to work on the Cotillion in earnest. Posters were made, decorations planned, and tickets sold. At last the big night came and it was a success-socially and financially. The music was wonderful. Then began the long and tedious work on the yearbook. Meetings, typing, pictures and many long hours were spent on it. Finally it was done and another success was chalked up on our list. Towards the end of the year we became joyful and sad. Many long minutes were spent talking over the experiences and fun we've had in the last few years. As our parting advice to the lowly undergraduate we say-work hard and enjoy yourselves for these are your golden years-the years you will always remember. L 1 THE BOYS GLEE CLUB The Boys Glee Club started off the year with a greatly enlarged attendance. They made recordings of several selections in order to study their singing. They sang for the Parent-Teachers Association and also for several school entertainments. Combined with the Girls Choral Club, they gave several selections at class day and graduation exercises. Again this year they joined with Sceneshifters and Choral Club in taking part in the school operetta, The Pirates of Penzance. CHORAL CLUB This year's Choral Club, which was the largest in the school, has made some creditable appearances. Under the able guidance of Mrs. Walker and Mr. Wahle, they made their debut at the first assembly of the year. They performed at the school Christmas Program and at one of the Parent-Teachers meetings. They attended the All-State Musical Festival at the Bushnell Memorial in Hartford and with the presentation of the operetta, The Pirates of Penzance, they completed an enjoyable and beneficial musical year. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council this year has made some very important and lasting decisions. We decided that the Valedictorian of the Senior class should receive a fifty dollar Savings Bond and the Salutatorian should receive a twenty-five dollar savings bond. A Junior Red Cross Council was formed within the Student Council and four of our members were chosen to serve on the Young People's Community Association Commit- tee. We've sponsored a clean-up campaigng a book driveg and a Community Chest drive, all of which have turned out successfully. Each council member pushed the clean-up campaign by drawing posters which resulted in a much neater school. The book drive was for the benefit of the sailors at the New London submarine base and because of this drive several members had an opportunity to visit the sub-base. This second year, the Community Chest drive was met with a generous response from everyone. Out of this many donations have been given to many worthwhile charities. The most important business of the year was a meeting with the teachers. VVe were able to discuss and remedy many of the gripes of the students. The 1949-'50 Student Council officers are: president-Thomas Howard, vice president-Caroline Steinson, secretary-treasurer-Alberta Soderstrom. FORUM CLUB This year the Morgan Forum Club was host to the semi-annual Shoreline Forum. This interesting and educational event, which was held at the Andrews Memorial, was largely attended by representatives from surrounding towns. The officers for the current year are as follows: Everett Hunt, Presidentg Roger Griffin, Vice President, Johanna Soderstrom, Secretaryg and Virginia Borst, Treasurer. Guided by its competent advisor, Mr. Drew, its members are now qualified to compete in any topic under discussion. The Forum is an all important part of Morgan's activities and it is broadening and enlightening to meet with pupils from other schools and discuss subjects of importance and interest to all. SCENESHIFTERS The Sceneshifters is a dramatic organization under the direction of Miss Horan This club has given the school and townspeople much enjoyable entertainment in the past The club began this year s activities by electing the following officers President Beverly Pendleton Vice President Caroline Stemson Secretary Shirley Kroupa and Treasurer Alberta Soderstrom At Christmas time the Sceneshifters planned and presented the Christmas Program which was held in the Grammar school on December 19th Soon after this a cast was chosen to present the skit The Ins and Outs which was put on at the Andrews Memorial during a school assembly The club also took an active part in the operetta The Pirates of Penzance the cast of which included members of the Boys Glee Club the Choral Club and the Sceneshifters With all the entertainments that were planned the Sceneshifters again succeeded in having a full and prosperous year IVY LEAVES The Ivy Leaves has just completed an exceptional year. Many issues filled with articles of interest to everyone in the school have been published. They began the year with an organization meeting under the direction of the new advisor Mr. Robert Hamil- ton. Nominations were taken for ofiicers and the following were elected: Editor-in- Chief, Ann Holbrookg Assistant Editor Myra Lee Dutrielleg Business Manager Joan Wall' and Exchange Editor, Ruth Schumack. Credit for the many and varied issues should be given not only to the members of the staff but to the many reporters and typists without whose help each issue would have been impossible. Special credit and thanks should be extended to Mr. Lindsay Fletcher whose poems have added much to every issue. PRESS CLUB This is the second year for this club at Morgan. It was established by the Seniors of '49 and carried on and ex- panded by the Seniors of '50. The first meeting was held and the officers were elected. They were: President-Carl Woodstockg Vice President- Thomas Howardg Secretary- Lee Correllg Treasurer-John Johnson. The first job was the print- ing of programs for all the basketball games. Then came tickets for the Senior Cotil- lion and in rapid-fire pro- grams and name tags for the Shoreline Forum, tickets for the University of Connecti- cut Glee Club, covers for the Courses of Studies for the next year, and many other odd jobs. The club took in many new members who will carry the club on through the coming years and who will try to better it in every way they can. -'L Ltd' MORGAN SEWING CLUB This year the Sewing Club elected at the first meeting the following officers: Presi- dent-Marilyn Holbrook, Vice President - Alberta Soder- strom, Secretary - Mildred Brainard and Treasurer- Sally Holbrook. They started off the year by selling tickets for a raffle for which the prize was a radio. This got their treasury off to a good start and they added to this by showing several movies. Their big project of the year was the annual Spring Fashion Show. The Sewing Club obtained the wardrobe of spring clothes from New York and had as models some of the girls in school. They also gave several food sales under the able direction of Miss Patricia Strange, their advisor. As in previous years, the Sewing Club took a trip to New York City in the Spring. OFFICERS . Carl Woodstock C Thomas Howard f. , , Lee Correll .. John Johnson HI Y CLUB The H1 Y met soon after school started and elected the following officers PTCSI dent Roger Griffin Vice President W1ll1am Champion Secretary Martha Griswold and Treasurer Marion Emack The flrst thing to be done was to have 1n1t1at1on for the Freshmen who were coming in as new members About fifteen Freshmen suffered The club held a dance in February which proved to be a social success although not a financial one A Saint Patrick s Day party was also held and everyone enjoyed themselves Three members attended the H1 Y Youth ln Government Program in Hartford Those representing the group were William Champion Senator and Martha Grxswold n atives and Roger Griffin Represe t The attendance has been rather poor this year the probable reason being that the H1 Y doesn t intend to sponsor their traditional Minstrel Show The attendance will probably increase next year w1th a class of about fifty freshmen entering Morgan MORGAN TGWER STAFF The Morgan Tower Staff under the full co-operation of the entire class and under the direction of the editor Carl Woodstock was a complete success. With the guidance of our class advisor Mr. Duguid we succeeded in making this issue of the yearbook more of a financial success than any other previous class. We sincerely hope that this book will recall to your minds the many cheerful days at Morgan. The Tower Staff is as follows: Schubert. and John Wilson. and Charles Kelsey Schubert. Good cooperation and hard work on the part of the girls won them a very successful season although not as triumphant as that of last year. Under the able coaching of Miss Strange, good sportsmanship and clean play prevailed throughout the year. Although five of the nine letter winners are leaving this year, Morgan promises to put up some keen competition next year. The new members, Abigail Comstock and Shirley Goodhue, were aptly taught the cheers by the following former members: Ly- dia Pardo, Beverly Pendleton, Jo- hanna Soderstrom, Betsy Dibble and Gertrude Platts. With their favorite cheer 4'Ash Can they decided to have a little Indian doll for a mascot. With the enthusiastic spectators to help them, they followed 'our' team through a very successful year. f ' - ' f , ., g..zAcQ--fa-217 M' 1 I H441 f-gf-95 f , , 'n 4. The main project sponsored by the A. A. Council was the annual magazine cam- paign. The profit received was spent in purchasing a tape recorder, an amplifying system and girls' and boys' basketball equipment. These were enjoyed by all. The basketball banquet was well planned by the A. A. Council and the delicious food was enjoyed by everyone. They presented interesting speakers and the basketball awards were presented. The Council leaves the largest treasury that has ever been held by an Athletic Council. 00 in Q1,33?ii'a Qwfgiffjwm-gin-W WW X f-J iffiiifwf GWQMWJZJZW ,Q JLMWQ ing? if wwf 'yr 700'0 Vfg7YC 9,1 Z V if - 4', , :L fy-7 P-1r'Pv9Dbff'Je 77, , v AW 2,25 if wwe -5 W ad?
