While I was in a Europe, and - your President -sent' me a book- telling what had been done by the Society and reproducing. some lof the speeches that had been made. 'He also gave me the names of some of the distinguished men Who, in timespast, have appeared before this Society. It is a great array of distinguished names, and ,as I looked , overthem and saw how they represented different' elements of our national life and recalled different characterf istics of the early settlers, I wondered f if in the selection you .had not tried to find men, living, to- day Who inf some Way' Would remind- youof the great men among, the Dutch.
