DOWNS CONLEY MORTELL PHLLON VARSITY BASKETBALL REVIEW The Red and Gray opened its annual pursuit of the Tri State League basketball title December 9 1953 against Trinity Pawling in Washington and permitted the visitors to steal the game in the closing seconds 61 60 With only five seconds remaining the Beebe men held a seemingly insurmountable four point ads antage but Trinity Paw ling employ ing a full court press stole the ball twice for drive in scores and added one foul shot to take the victory Larry Downs topped the scorers with 34 points while Bob Mortell followed with 17 markers With the season recommencing after the Christmas vacation the team yourneyed to Berkshire January 13 where it won handily 57 48 Off to a slow start leading by only three points at the half 31 78 the Red and Gray pulled away in the third stanza ably assisted by Downs and Mortell who assembled 27 and 16 points for the day Appearing against the perennial League title challengers Kent on the Kent floor anuary 16 The Gunnerys ego was rudely deflated 69 57 The outcome was never in doubt for after the first quarter the visitors never narrowed the gap to less than four points Downs was again the leading scorer with 37 points Mortell being next with 10 They could not however match Kent s trio of Topham Drouet Hughes which amassed a total of 59 points Returning home anuary 70 the ct urt men smothered a small Hotchkiss team mostly under the boards to triumph 50 34 The losers how ever were in the ball game for the first two quarters trailing by only three at the half Restricting the visitors to only two field goals during the third period the quintet subsequently pulled away never to be headed again Once more the durable Dow ns led the scorer with 73 points while Mortell notched 13 romped to an easy victory with newly elected captain Dow ns registering 71 of his 30 points in the first half The next encounter found Mr Beebe s forces at Canterbury anuary 77 where they coasted to another easy win 63 47 The match seemed a fair one up until the inception of the third period when with Dow ns and Mortell totaling 74 points between them in this frame the contest became a rout Home again anuary 30 for their second game with Berkshire the Beebemen glided to a 58 39 decision thus bringing thetr record to a respectable 5 wins and 7 losses With Downs recording 10 of his 76 points in the first quarter and the Red and Gray defense led by 6 7 Bob Mortell holding the Green scoreless from the floor the winners were never passed Phelon and Mortell follow ed in the scoring with 10 and 9 points respectively With the Tri State League title x irtually at stike the team trax eled to Taft February 4 where it lost a squeaker 51 49 Because of the proficitncy of Dow ns Mortell and Phelon 58 y . . .- . , Xi 7 7 I Y 3 - ' 5 - , , , . - , . . . , . a 1 s ' - 1 3 -' 7 Y . . . . 7 5 y J ' - 1 ' , , - x 1 ' 1 ' . .242 M ! 7 wr-v-nr--.Q SLP-TER WILLIAMS VARSITY BASKETBALL REVIEW from the floor durrng the first half the men from The Gunnery were able to capture the lead 26 25 Following the 1nterm1ss1on Taft paced by Captain Lanny Baird pulled out in front by 7 only to watch the visitors come all the way back 49 49 Fifteen seconds remained Baird took a pass rn the pivot drove in and got off a short jump shot which went 1n cleanly to give Taft the ball game and its captain an 1nd1v1dual total of 30 points Downs registered 25 scores Playrng host to Westminster February 6 the Washington quintet gained a 25 10 lead in the first perrod and coasted from there to a 63 48 win Hotchkiss was the scene of the next fray February 10 There The Gunnery received a scare in the last quarter before triumphrng 44 47 Holding what appeared to be a safe 11 point lead entering the final frame the team all but dissipated that margrn and just managed to eke out a win As usual Downs was high scorer this time accounting for 23 points Avengmg their previous defeat at the hands of the Blue and White The Gunnery hoopsters trimmed Kent 64 47 February 17 on the home court Dow ns wrth 30 Morrell with 22 and Phelon wlth 8 led the attack wh1le Drouet garnered 76 for Kent The Gunnery crushed a weak Canterbury quintet 61 47 February 17 at Washington as Downs sank 25 of a game total of 38 points in the first half to help clmch the game Morrell followed him with 16 markers On the road once more the Red and Gray tackled a quick and alert Trlnlty Pawlmg team February 24 and were conclusively thwarted 67 47 The game became an absurdity after the first stanza and Down s 77 points Morrell s 9 and Phelon s 7 could not match the scoring of the hosts who were led by Coutures 76 markers The momentous day finally armed after many years of expectation as The Gunnery met Choate February 27 on the court of the new Memorial Activities Building The after noon was a success as a capacity crovsd watched Larry Dow ns make 37 points while leading his team to a 57 42 victory He was follow ed ln the scorlng column by Morrell and Conley who tallred 13 and 8 points respectively In the last fracas of the season March 3 The Gunnery succumbed 61 55 to Taft now the League champions As throughout the season Larry Down ns was high scorer marking up 25 for the day However these were of no avail for the Taft men seemed able to score from anywhere on the court Endmg the League season in third place with 7 suns and 5 losses the Varsity qulntet compiled an overall record of 10 suns and 5 defeats Axeragrng 777 points per game Captain Larry Downs amassed 416 points to lead the team rn scoring Running second to Downs w1th 12 3 per game was Bob Morrell who was elected captain for next year C fer-fm SCHAFER , 'X N I ' ' 1.
