The Skill Center is unique in its variety of courses offered previously on a smaller scale last year. Remodeled as a result of a bond election, the building was formerly the Inland Navigation Company and has been renovated to suit the need of classrooms and shop areas. The Skill Center is based on the concept that students can learn the various skills by doing them as they are taught. This is the first year in the program and it will be another five years before it can be labeled a success, according to Mr. Robert Taylor, Administrator of the Skill Center. A unique thing about the Skill Center this year is that classes participated in learning experiences by practicing their newly-learned skills byjoining in the actual planning and remodeling of the Skill Center itself. x Tw' SE ii -K Bill Miller QSM. They made up for this loss by winning the next two games: beating Canby, 28-6, and Mollala, 13-O. After these wins The Dalles was continually shut down until they upset their arch rival, Wy'East, with a score of 14-6 This game became the highlight of the season and softened the blow of the other losses. The Dalles Indian basketball team completed their most successful season since 1953, compiling a record of 16 wins and only 6 losses, They finished both halves of Wilco League play with identical 8-2 record, giving them a 16-4 league record and a third place finish. The nucleus of this year's team will return for the 1971 season. thus, another fine team is expected next year. Two seniors, Del Bradford and Kris Thomsen, Junior Ed Sandoz. and Sophomores Ron Stover and Jim Willis, were the five which played the majority of the time and were so instrumental in the team's success. The Dalles' longest winning streak of the season was stopped at 7 games when Jesuit, the Wilco League champion and eventual runner-up in the state tournament, defeated them 57-53 on the lndian's home court. This was the only home court loss The Dalles suffered in ten contests played at Kurtz Gymnasium. Perhaps the biggest win for the young Indians came in the first half of the season when they defeated the number five team in state rankings, the Reynolds Lancers, 62-59 in an overtime thriller before an overflow crowd at The Dalles High gym. The most disappointing defeats had to be the 45-44 loss to Silverton which kept them out of the first half play-offs and their loss to Reynolds in the final game of the season which removed them from second half play-offs and a chance to participate in the state tournament. It is apparent that basketball at The Dalles is definitely on an upswing as the 31-13 record over the past two season's so indicates. The crowds at the home games were almost always near capacity and the community and school support given this year's lndian team was most gratifying. It is hoped that Coach Paul Poetsch's building program at The Dalles can be climaxed by a trip to the state tournament in 1971. Out of a cave man crawled To hunt through the warm spring. To live in nature's grasp Like every living thing. His sons would build a hut And seed and grow wild grain, Working against the land While praying for the rain. The sun crawled on its way Giving its warmth and light And not seeming tojudge That which moved in tis sight. The sons of sons tamed beasts And built their walls of stone. And they began to trade, And metal replaced bone. The new sons wrote their thoughts To share the things they knew. They worked with art and war As their city-states grew. The sun continued on lgnoreing all it saw lt raced on to the west Yielding not to man's law. As man conquered his world His numbers soared still higher. With his science he built Machines that ran on fire. He killed the game for sport And cut the timber stand. He clogged the air with smoke His wastes filled stream and land. The sun fled ever on Perhaps it dared not look. When man reached out his arms, The very heavens shook. The land and sky grew foul: Man's numbers filled the earth And wars racked continents As babies starved from birth. Man's hand held the atom To use in peace and war He could not breathe his wealth Nor could he feed his poor. -John R. Q., is slfaii' 595 it DHS was quite fortunate in having Jan Soloy represent us as a summer AFS Exchange Student during 1969. Jan lived with the Alfred Burki family in Bern, Switzerland. Mr. Burki and his wife Elizabeth, both architects, have two daughters, Regula, 19, and Judith, 15. While in Swi'aerland,Jan spoke Swiss, German, and French. Jan enjoyed everything about her trip, including a six week vacation in Schwazenburg. The 1969-1970 AFS Exchange Student was Ute Becker. Ute, a very energetic brunette from Cologne, Germany, lived with the John Kerege family during her stay in The Dalles. Ute was a member of Ski Club. FHA, and Honor Society. She was quite active in sports, participating in powderpuff football and basketball, playing volleyball, tennis, and swimming whenever possible. Ute was interested in DHS government and attended class meetings as well as Student Council meetings. She had no particular favorites as far as teachers and classes. She enjoyed them all. Ute left The Dalles to arrive in Germany July 17. Behind her she left many friends at DHS. Gnaouation RIGHT: Mr. Glenn Betschart, Dr. Milton Skov, Larry Kelty: BELOW: The Rev. The commencement speaker, chosen by the seniors, was the Rev. Terry Stillman, associate pastor of St. Peter's Catholic Church here in The Dalles. His address, titled The Kingdom of Downtown, examined various forms, life styles. and values of today. He said youth would achieve lofty goals when it overcomes pessimism that pervades the adult world. Salutatorian John R. Miller led the Pledge of Allegiance and Mike Carpenter sang, Let There Be Peace. Gary Brown, senior class president. introduced the speaker. Mr. Turnbull presented the class and Dr. Milton Skov, acting school board chairman of district 12, presented diplomas. The benediction was given by Cheri Sweeney.
