The team lost only two games while winning eight, and these were to the State A-2 champion lPrinevillej and the A-'I runner-up fBen- son Tech of Portlanclj. This is particularly impressive if circumstances are reviewed. The Indians weren't given much of a pre-season rating, they had a new coach, a light line, and few returning veterans. Coaches and boys worked hard, and an efficient machine was put together. The hard-fought battle with Prineville and the loss to the huge Mechanics were the only blemishes on their record. Two reasons for their success could probably be summed up as spirit and the ability to play all phases of the game well. The 92 D. Jones, L. Larson, F. Morrow, D. Kiser, S. Smith, M. Ronslam, C. The Cowboys displayed their state cham- pionship form on Amaton Field but were lucky to take a victory home. The bitterly fought struggle could have gone either way with the Indians coming back strong in the second half. Jones was blocked on this one as speedy Fred Hall picked up yardage. THE DALLES 25-PENDLETON 6. An alert band of Indians capi- talized on the breaks and pushed the Buckaroos all over the field. A rugged defense, which caused many fumbles, and a high- geared offense, especially through the air, provided the margin of victory. THE DALLES 24-CAMAS 19. Coming up with an impenetrable defense in the second half, the hopped-up lndians continued to display their winning form. With Hyde and Richau leading the attack on the ground, the team fought the bigger Papermakers off their feet. THE DALLES 12-BAKER O. Get- ting their first really important victory of the season, the Indians rolled on. Baker had a good club but were simply out-played by the hustling Dalles' boys. Jones made up for his missed tackle with a short gain around end against the Cowboys. Urness goes for a gain against Pendleton. Richau moves in to help. Urness scored here against Camas. The Tribe was extremely fortunate to win this game. The Tigers were a fired-up football machine operating on their own field and treated the Indians to a hard-hitting contest. Taylor and Page were lost for the rest of the season in this encounter and Urness was unable to play due to an earlier iniury. THE DALLES 45-HERMISTON 7. Bouncing back from the La Grande struggle, the Indians buried the Bulldogs to clinch the Blue Mountain League Title and a place in the state play-offs. The whole Indian team got in on the massacre. .Ierry Urness ran wild and Milt Richau completed II of I4 passes. THE DALLES 21-HOOD RIVER O. This traditional game, on a frosty Hood River field, was a rugged warm-up for the state play-offs. The Dragons were merely outmanned as the Indians swept to their eighth and final victory. THE DALLES 20-BENSON TECH 40. The end of another season. The Indians simply couIdn't cope with the beefy Mechanics in this quarter-final game. However, without a couple of bad breaks for us in the form of a fumble and a pass interception, it might have been more of a contest. 'IO1 The Indian ground attack rolls! Sa gm Although the deadline of this yearbook necessitates completion of this section before the end of the season, one thing is certain: These boys are good-and they could go all the way. The Indians have won 22 games in a row Kas well as their sub- districtj, making them the only undefeated team in the state, and giving them an undefeated regular season. They have ranked on top of the state sportswriters' poll all year and are classed as the top team in the state. To prove this they must win their district and go on to the state tournament during March in Eugene. Pendleton is the team they will play for the district title. The Indians have beaten them twice this season. Bill Moore and John Lundell are currently leading the team in scoring. Two top rebounders are possessed in Moore and Dick Haynes. Only two men have fouled out in all 22 games this season. We wish the indians luck! Final statistics and the season's outcome will be published in the Steelhead supplement. 102 COACH TED SARPOLA- Sarp DICK HAYNES Senior Forward OUR COACH- SARP An illustrous figure, Ted Sarpola grew up in Astoria where he gained all-state bas- ketball honors for three years in high school.
