The coun- cil also had an added iob of revising the constitution this year. To welcome the new members of the second-semes- ter council the first semester students sponsored a luncheon followed by entertainment. Ztakm The quiet, efficient manner of the ushers that the guests at the auditorium saw at all major school per- formances did not iust happen. These girls were care- fully selected and trained in their many duties. lt was not all work, however, for Ushers had the opportunity to see and hear the many fine artists pre- sented by the Community Concert group. One of the high-lights of the year was the formal initiation held for the new girls. The officers were President, Olivia Tharalclson, Vice- President, Margaret Preston, Secretary, Marilyn Emer- son, Treasurer, Dawn Kniesteadt, Sergeant-at-Arms, Gar- land Wilhelm, Advisor, Miss Gates. ,. To finance their club the boys were kept busy selling popcorn at every game. A club picnic climaxed the year's work for this important service club. The group made a trip to Portland in March to visit newspaper plants and also to attend a musical program. Formal initiation and a banquet for ten initiates were held April 3 at the Bank Hotel Din- ing Room, with Mel Olmstead, Steelhead photographer, and Mr. Shropshire, Tilli- cum printer, as guests. Just a few of their activities included serving a dinner to the school board-budget committee members, prepar- ing a sack lunch served in the school manual training shop for the Kiwanis, and selling mums at the Hood River foot- ball game. Social events scheduled were a formal initiation in of,-4 January, Mothers Tea, and a spring picnic. This important facet in our organizations had a calendar filled with varied activities. ln the fall they attended the State Fair and Pacific International Live Stock show where the iudging team placed third in the state and tenth among Northwest teams from Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Prior to this the team won first at the Milton Spring Show, sixth at The Dalles Stock Show, second at the Multnomah and Deschutes County Fairs, and first at the Washington and Umatilla County Fairs, for one of the best records in the state. The District Parliamentary Procedure contest in the Blue Mountain League was held at The Dalles, February 7 and 8 with our chapter of F.F.A. playing host. To get in some good practice before the contest, parliamentary procedure was exemplified by this organization for the Chenowith Grange, Co-operative Farmers Union, and the Kiwanis Club. The team, composed of Mickey Ranslam, Chairman, Merle Henkle, Vice-President, Bob Ranslam, Secretary, Ken Kramer, Treasurer, and Don Anderson, Reporter, was awarded first place and Bill Root won second place in public speaking for the chapter. A shop contest was held in the spring with rope and wood work, soldering and welding being judged. The Hi-Y began its career with vigor this year by going to a Hi-Y Legislation meeting at Lewis and Clark College in February and also by send- ing two members to the State Legislation at Salem in April. One of their many proiects was to hold panels at dif- ferent members' homes to discuss certain problems per- taining to high school students. The wonderful banquet, prepared by the mothers, started the festivities with Dick Bishop, class president, as master of ceremonies. The tables carried out the theme with Aladdin's lamps filled with spring flowers used as part of the decorations. To enter Aladdin's cave,fKurtz Gym in disguisej, the magic words Open Sesamef' were spoken. The rock door rolled back to reveal an enchanting scene topped by a pink cloud. The wall panels illustrating the story of Ali Baba intrigued the dancers. One of the centers of attrac- tion was the bubbly fountain which added reality to the picture. The night of enchantment, looked forward to for four years, came to an end much too soon. This was to Marshfield in a semi-final game of the state tournament, one of the greatest ever seen on MacArthur Court. Having completed their regular season unscathed with 22 consecutive wins, Sarp's boys traveled to Pendleton for the district play-off and a state tourney position. The tribe swept two games 87-63 and 44-43. The first was a typical racehorse contest and in the latter, Pendleton's stalling tactics failed. Lundell led scorers with 29 points for both games. Eugene and the state tournament: Our first game was in the morning against Ontario. The Indians appeared to have the iitters while the Tigers were determined. Final score: The Dalles 63, Ontario 61. In the second round we met Albany who had two boys 6'7 tall and was favored due to our miserable showing in the first game. The boards are still hot from the running display put on by the fired-up Indians. Albany's Bulldogs were out-rebounded and simply run off their feet. Final Score: The Dalles 76, Albany 71. The Marshfield game was a thriller all the way. The Pirates had a higher field goal shoot- ing percentage, .449 to .310, which could explain the game in a figure. The crowd was practically hysterical during this once in a lifetime. Final Score: Marshfield 75, The Dalles 71. The Indians bounced back from the Marshfield game and simply pulverized the outclassed Dragons. Final Score: The Dalles 84, Dallas 44. Top Honors: John Lundell lecl the tournament scorers with 71 points. Bill Moore tied for the tourney rebound lead. The Indian team set a new four-game scoring record with 294 points. The relay team of Ron Froebe, Mickey Ranslam, Roger Bourland, and Bob Hyde set a new 440-yard relay record at the Hayward Relays and placed fifth in the state meet 880-yard relay. Milt Richau and Gary Haynes qualified for state in the iavelin and high jump respectively but failed to place in the meet. They still had a fine ball club and a season record of only three losses. We started out in impressive fashion by drubbing La Grande, Wyeast, and Columbia Prep on our own field and Hermiston there. Lundell pitched a one-hitter and Morrison threw a two- hitter against Hermiston. Then came the crucial Pendleton series at the Round-Up grounds. ln two heated contests the Redskins split with the eventual district winners. Then came two heart-breaking losses to a fighting Baker club. The altitude and one game played in the morning didn't help the boys any. After beating Mac-Hi, four senior hurlers CWalsh, Moore, Morrison, and Lundellj twirled a no-hitter against Wyeast, Seven errors allowed the runs. Lundell, Moore and Stuart led the club in hitting with Lundell and Morrison pitching good ball. Lundell received the American Legion trophy awarded on basis of character, ability, and sportsmanship. is 1 mwv ' The girls' tennis team had an active year and qualified one doubles duo for the state meet. New ideas and plenty of enthusiasm led to beautiful and clever decorations, with a large painted windmill as the center of attraction. A white wooden bridge led across a moss banked stream, and tulips added color to the scene. Refreshments were served ancl coats checked by fresh- man and sophomore students dressed in Dutch costumes. Hard at work on the final touches. ome of the couples take time out to enioy refreshments 9. f A DONNA LEE ROXY ANDERSON NEILA NOVAK OLIVIA THARALDSON CONNIE SHIMP CAROLYN HOWARD Among the activities of the newly organized Girls' League was the selection at each meeting of a GirI of the Month , chosen from the senior class. From these senior girls, one was to be chosen as the first Girl of the Year. Late in the spring a semi-formal dance was held, with all the decorations lending them- selves to the theme of Toy Land. As the final climax to the big evening, the Girl of the Year was announced. Selected for the honor was Margaret Preston, the No- vember choice. MARGARET PRESTON af fwwzz. ft 35 -s -Q,-sv Time out tor refreshments. r cb'l5 Bw!! The evening ot April ll proved to be a big and eventful one tor the members of the Senior Class. lt began with the annual banquet, prepared by the Senior mothers, and ended with the ball. Upon entering the gym, the students saw decorations which cleverly carried out the theme of Memory Lane. At one end of the floor was an old fashioned swing, and in the center was a huge scrapbook containing pictures ot the Class of '53, Some of the students were surprised and pleased to see former teachers serving punch at an old wish- ing well.
