Preservation was one of First Division's primary concerns. They providing manpower for bridge Watches, Visit, Board and Search teams, boat crews, Sea and Anchor details and Underway Replenishment details. This is the division in which many first-time sailors begin, develop as Seamen and then mature into rated Boatswainmates or strike out into other professional ratings. With THACH covering over 25,000 nautical miles on its round-trip voyage to and from the Gulf, the Quartermasters had more than enough charts to correct and prepare. Port calls and stops for fuel in Guam, Australia, Thailand, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Singapore and Hong Kong were planned with precision. The Signalmen kept visual communications a viable part of THACH's tactical strategy dur- ing tactical manuevering, underway replenishments and bilateral operations.
