In Memory John Fitzgerald Kennedy ' T IS NATIUN, UNDER EDD jr! 'ma LoNo msronv of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility-I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it-and the glow from that fire can truly light t.he world. Kennedy on lanuary zo. l96i All enthusiasm was suddenly snuffed out for Texico students on November 22, 1963, when the announce- ment came over the speakers in all rooms, Presi- dent Kennedy is dead. It was to have been a big day in school with a pep rally and a motor caravan to the first out-of-town basketball game. All this was cancelled. Students forgot that this was quiet day at school, that they were not supposed to talk until they let go with yells at the pep rally. In the hallways, they clustered in groups and talked in hushed tones, stunned by this drastic deed. For days afterward they clutched at every written word about their President, and spent all the time possible listening to radio and T.V. reports. Like all Americans over the entire nation, Texico students could say only in fragmentary sentences, Oh, no- , It couldn't be- , I won't, lcan't believe- . And so the biggest story of this or any other genera- tion fits into the theme of the 1964 Wolverine, The Big Story. Texico students will never forget the day: the man, John F. Kennedyg or the horrible deed, ,,k,yV.. 1 It is the hope of the staff, that after many of the de- tails fade from memory, Texico students will always be able to recall the concluding statement in Presi- dent Kennedy's Inaugural Ad dre ss to the end that they will carry on his fight for peace. And so, my fellow Americans: Ask not what your country can do for you- ask what you can do for your country. This gave them an idea--Texico High School is a little school with a big story. The only difference is that the little girl didn't know what to do with the big toy, but staff members know what to do about the big story.
