Superintendent of Schools, Panhandle, Texas, 1927-1952. Texas Wesley'an College, 19.32-. To The Members of the Senior Class and The Student Body of Texas Wesleyan College: The members of the class of 1942 who are able to remain and complete their degrees are indeed fortunate. We are proud of those members of your class who have answered the call to the colors and we pray for an early peace that they may re-enter college and complete their education. To all others who, for any reason, have been forced to withdraw from school, We recommend an early return. In this hour of national emergency, may the friendships you have known become dearer. May your Alma Mater, its faculty and friends, deserve your love and respect. LAW SONE. . .-.W '-+ ,L '4 ,, 5 Q ,', -1' z I? 1 ' - H . T- T' ffl Rt wzinisffzafion 4' WALTER R. TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SENIOR CLASS AND THE STUDENT BODY OF TEXAS WESLEYAN COLLEGE: In times of great catastrophe our minds go back into the past to find precedents to solve our current crises. REMEMBER Remember the Alamou was the rallying cry of the disturbed Texans as they were going through the disastrous period of the Runaway Scrapen prior to the decisive victory on the Bluebonneted plains of San Jacinto. REMEMBER Remember the Maine was the watch cry of the American youth of the ninety-eights as they were going through the Slough of Uncertainty preceding their important victory at Santiago. REMEMBER p Remember Pearl Harbor is our present inspirational motto as we push through the Dark Days ahead into that ultimate victory that crowns the forces of right and justice. REMEMBER It is our responsibility toiever find ourselves on the side of right and justice. The Ram gridmen won live of their six contests, suifering their only loss to the Yellow jackets of Howard Payne. The Rams scored 194 points against 139 for their opponents in the six conference tilts. TNVC scored 68 points more than their nearest rival, Howard Payne. Two Rams, Graham Kyle and tlohnny Hunter, were among the hrst four in the individual scoring race. All season the Xvesleyans won live of eight games, but two of these losses were against non-conference teams who proved too fast company for the Wfesleyans. The opening game was lost to Hardin-Simmons and the Rams closed the season by dropping a contest to the Texas A. 86 l. gridmen. ff: V JOE CONNWAY Played good ball .mll sem n s ,dV W1lh..,,,M W IQLMIZR ADDINGTON Another guunl taclilc QA! Wl ffroscmt WEIMAN All-conference end BUFORD MCCAULEY Great defensive guard JOE TURNER Fleet wing back RUEL HOFFMAN Field general W-16 Hardin-Simmons Cowboys took the Texas Wesleyaii Rams for a ride, 31-7, in the opening game of the 1941 season. Long passes accounted for most of the Simmons scores. Capt. Murray Evans, tossing, and Harry Burrus, receiving, was a combination that was infallible for the Cowboys. The seige began earlv in the first period, when Burrus fielded a -11-yard pass on the Rams' 10. The XY'esleyans' only score came after a pass from Johnny Hunter to Marcell Harrison worked for S0 yards and a first on the H-S 16. Raul Manriquez took the ball on a reverse for a first down on the six. Hunter followed with a pass to Manriquez in the flat for the score. The Rams opened the conference IIICC with a 16-6 win over the Southwestern U. Pirates on the rain-soaked Rosemont Junior High School gridiron. Late in the second quarter McMurrey, Southwestern guard, intercepted a screen pass from Hoffman intended for Graham Kyle, and galloped SS yards for a score and the Bucs led 6-0. The Rams turned on the power in the third quarter and jumped into the lead and were never headed. Hoffman took the ball over from the 10 for the first Wfesleyan score and johnny Hunter made the extra point to put the Rams ahead 7-6. Kenneth Moore took a toss from Hoffman and scampered over for the next TWC score, Parham broke through, minutes before the end of the game, to bar a pass down behind the Pirates' goal for two more Ram points. Two first period touchdowns gave the Wfesleyan gridmen a good start in their 29-6 win over the McMurry Indians in Abilene and enabled them to win their second Texas Confer- ence contest of the 19-fl season. The first marker was set up by Captain Buford McCauley when he broke through from his position in the line and blocked a punt on the 22. On the next play Hunter went across the middle for 6 points. Near the end of the first quarter Hunter tossed a pass to Marcell Harrison good for 35 yards and another Xveslevan touchdown, Alternating with passes and running plays in the second period, the Wfesleyans pushed the ball down to the two, from which point Hunter took Hoffman's pass in the end zone. Both the Rams and the Indians scored in the last period. The Wfesleyans were on the midfield stripe when Hunter faded back and tossed a long spiral to Capt. Joe Turner, who caught the ball oo the 15 and continued to the two before he was brought down. Kyle went over the right side of the line for the marker on the next play. The Indians came to life and made their score in the last frame also. Wlieelei', McMurry quarter, got loose and ran for a touchdown, but the attempted conversion failed. Once more the Indians threatened but the drive on the Rams' five failed. A second non-conference team scored a win over the Rams in the fourth week of the 19-fl football season. East Texas State Teachers College took a 6-point lead early in the second period and held the advantage for the remainder of the game. In the second quarter Hoffman booted the ball to the Lions' 32. J. C. Meeks, red-headed Etex quarterback, re- ceived the ball from center, found a man in the open and tossed the ball 50 yards into the waiting hands of Cordray, who in turn flipped a lateral to Bogue, the latter then raced the remaining 35 steps for the score. The Rams threatened once just after the intermission with alternating pass plays and an unusually strong ground game, but the Wfesleyan drive bogged on the East Texas ten and the rest of the battle was back and forth between the 40-yard stripes. Everything was right for the Wesleyfaii eleven when they played Austin College at Sherman and as a consequence they came out on the big end of the 48-7 score. Elmer Addington recovered an enemy fumble on the Kangaroo 33-yard line to set up the first score. The ball was carried to the Austin 2-yard line on power plays before Graham Kyle smashed over. Wyatt Ringgold, Austin quarterback, circled the end for SS yards before he was pulled down on the Rams' eight-yard line by Red Ledbetter. An official off-side penalty against the Rams placed the ball on the three-yard stripe and from here Ellie Floyd went off tackle for the score, then kicked the extra point. TXVC came back to score two more touchdowns before the half ended. On the first scoring march during this period the Rams carried the ball from their own 30 on running plays alone to go over for the score. Graham Kyle went over for the score when he broke through center on the 18-yard line and outran the Kangaroos' secondary. The other drive during this quarter originated on the Rams' ZS with Ledbetter and Hoffman accounting for most of the gains. Hoffman made the score and Hunter accounted for the extra point. Three Ram scores kept the fans interested during the final period. Kyle made one of the markers and Moore took passes from Cohn and Hunter for the other two markers. It was the same old story for the Rams when they met the Howard Payne Yellow jackets in Brownwood on Hal- loween night. It was as if the spooks were really after the Wesleyans for the Yellow -Iacket jinx was working as usual and the TWC team went down Z0-7. The Rams played good ball throughout but they were unable to cope with the Jackets' spread formation, which netted two of the three HP scores. It was late in the fourth period when the Rams finally struck back and made seven points. Red Ledbetter churned over from the Jacket nine just before the end of the game. It looked as if the Rams took the fury of their defeat at the hands of Howard Payne out on the hapless Hill Billies of Daniel Baker. The Billies came out on the round end of a 60-0 score for their twentieth straight loss on the gridiron. Even though the Rams scored at will, the Daniel Baker eleven scored a moral victory, besting the Wesleyans in first downs 9 to 7, and threatened to score once, getting the ball to the 13-yard line on a five-yard penalty and line plays after recovering a Ram fumble on the 20. The Rams closed up their conference business with a 59-0 win over the Trinity University Tigers at Farrington Field to wind up in second place in the Texas Conference race tied with Abilene Christian College. Early in the first quarter, Graham Kyle threw a pass to Oscar Weimann, end, who maneuvered behind the Trinity left halfback, the all-conference wingman took the ball on the 20, and sidestepped one defender and outran the safety man for a touchdown. Kyle made the point. Three more touchdowns were pushed across by the Wes- leyans before the intermission. On the first score in the second period, Raul Manriquez, speedy little back, cut to the side- lines and johnny Hunter found him with an aerial which he took and scampered the remaining 45 yards for the score. Hunter accounted for the next marker, running over from the 15. Kyle made the other score in the third period. Texas Wesleyan lost its final game of the season to Texas A. 81 I. at Corpus Christi, 39-13. The Rams were out-weighted, but never out-fought by the superior team and after a shaky first quarter settled and played excellent ball the rest of the game. Ruel Hoffman, playing his first game since he was injured in the Howard Payne fracas, tuned in his best game of the year. Passing, running and kicking for plenty of yardage in the affair, and stopping many Javelina running attacks with his back-cracking tackles. Graham Kyle scored one of the Rams' touchdowns to mount his total to 54 points, the second highest in the conference. Captain Joe Turner and Kave King, both seniors, finished their playing careers under the Wesleyan colors. More action shots of the Rams . . . Students enjoying the games. Pre-season games included two wins over the Dallas Dr. Pepper independents and a single victory over the North Texas State Teachers College quintet. The Rams lost the other end ofthe double- header to the Eagles and dropped two games to the powerful East Texas State Teachers. The other two de- feats were at the hands of Lon Morris Junior College, in the first round of the sectional AAU tournament, and to the Stout Institute of Wiscoimsiia in the first round of the Na- tional Intercollegiate tourney in Kansas City. The Rams opened the sea- son after being touted for a second division berth by Texas sports writers, who could see very little possibilities of the young inexperienced Wesley- ans winning the title for the third straight year. Clifton 'Wi If I Q '20 f 1 A AWHGQ Texas Wesleyan had a hot week-end just before the end of the season, when they coasted to a 66-19 victory over the Austin College Kan- garoos after running up a 42-8 margin at the intermis- sion. The next night the Wes- leyans continued to wax warm and came within two points of breaking the con- ference scoring record for a single game when they de- feated the Trinity Tigers 79 to 31 in their final appear- ance in Fort Worth in the 1942 season. Even after winning ten consecutive games the Rams still needed to win one of their two remaining contests. It was under this pressure that Texas Wesleyan whipped the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets 46-42 in the first of the two tilts. The Rams' margin of vic- tory wasn't as great as the score indicated for it wasn't until the Hnal eight minutes of play that Gus Miller's boys earned a safe lead. The following night the Wesleyan five overwhelmed the Daniel Baker Hill Billies in the Hnal conference game of the season. It was the third straight year that the Rams ended the season with a per- fect record. Their string of consecutive conference wins is at 41. V TENNIS . . ,.. Got any new clothes ? How's the boy friend ? Such were the expressions that were heard on the first day of school. And, O, those Freshmen! They get greener every year. Did you hear about Louise Coe thinking campus- ology is the care and beautification of the campus? Yes, Poss is the groom, but who is the bride? No, the poor soul wasn't really getting married: it was just the annual New Student-Old Student Wedding. Doris Gathings, who recently had a shure-enough wedding, was the bride. We saw Jane Hardin frantically taking notes during the ceremony. When we inquired about it we found that she was getting pointers for her new book, What Is This Thing Called-Love ? October: There's just nothing like good ole Halloween to make you want to turn back the calendar and be a kid again. Everyone, including the faculty, forgot about trying to be dignified and had a hilarious time at the annual TW carnival sponsored by the YW and YM. Dorothy Coker and Bob Lemons stole the show for the evening with their South American dance number. There's just no end to the local talent we have around here. Dorothy Graner was crowned Queen of the Spooks as the climax to the carnival. You heard about that old woman who froze to deathg well, there were several of them on the Howard-Payne Special. Some thawed out sufficiently enough, though, to get within range of the cameraman just before the train pulled out of the station. There was no birdie for them to look at, so Mr. Matthis, Gracie, and D'Arcy just grinned out of the window at the icicles. November - December: Holidays occupied our minds during both these months. THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK o CONTINENTAL NATIONAL BANK I I THE romwunm NATIONAL BANKoUNION BANK at must co. I W L- ,,J MEMBER BANKS OF THE FORT WORTH CLEARING HOUSE ASSOCIATION January: Bill Marshall, State Secretary of the Baptist Student Union, fairly took the campus by a storm in his series of lectures. Frank Bounds and the rest of the students turned out 1002 . Well, this was a Metho- dist campus, wasn't it? We're in the army now! At one time, this institution was known as Texas Woman's College, and if all this keeps up, looks like history is going to repeat itself. Everyone is feeling the patriotic urge and trying to get into some branch of the service. Even the worms are joining the Apple Corps. And then there was the Blackout. And, gosh, was it dark? Whose idea was it to have it on Dead Night, any- way? LaJuana and Oveta were seen t'?J trying to slip out, but it was to no avail-thanks to the squeaking floors in dear Boaz. Mid-term Exams and time to lay aside our last copy of Who Blew Out-the Flame? and get down to some last minute cramming. Who's the guy that first thought up this exam idea anyway? Why don't we ever cele- brate his birthday? G-r-r-r. February: Are we having another blackout or is the moon just working over time? Nope. guess again Polly, it's just that screwy War Time and everybody is getting up an hour earlier. Well. you know, early to bed and early to rise makes a man some thing or other. Whose heart was broken? When? Where? Such were the questions Dr. Fix 'Em and Dr. Mend 'Em answered at the Heart Smashers Convention. Walter Turner, master of ceremonies, didn't spare the embarassments either. We knew John Luce could blush, but we didn't L know just how much until we saw Edith Record-trying to get him in that corset. 3 .X C fb s .1- ake . recautions ' ITS SMART T0 DRIVE SAN ELY And it's smart to use thrifty -'I'P- Gasoline and -TP- Aero Motor Oil in Your Car TRADE WITH YOUR I FRIENDLY -TP- DEALER J Going to Dallas? What we're referring to is the one-act play contest. They were all cleverly given and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Of course, we didn't quite catch on what the Senior play was all about. It was just a wee bit over our heads, but then, aren't all the finer things of life? March: How did you like Mary B. in Roberta's evening dress at the Junior-Senior Banquet ? And did you notice the way Vergie Sue kept limping around all evening? Oh, Well, could she help it if June Ragle's extra pair of evening slippers were size 6 instead of 7. Glamour on review! Nothing could better describe the beauties that paraded on the stage of the Fine Arts Auditorium as the Sweetheart Review swung into action. Corky Davis, elected as Campus Sweetheart, lead the parade-smile and all. April: There comes a time in the life of every sopho- more when he must go through certain agonies-and agonies they were, for the Fish were after them coming and going on this-Their Day. The Sophs weren't to be outdone though, so they did their share of the mfs- chief. What certain young blond kicked out what cer- tain Junior's window during the excitement? Hazel Higgins, better known as Bones, Tom Egan, Jerry Drury, and other loyal Sophs also got in on the fun and through some rare accident UI Virginia Lee Johnson, Juanita Moore, and Elizabeth Sargent didn't appear on the Fish program, but the Freshman president an- nounced that the show must go on, so with many sub- stitutes, a clever performance was given. The Sirens were blowing: people were dashing madly about trying to reach the air-raid shelter before it was too late. Many were mangled beyond recognition and others even ruined their best clothes. A figure clad in a pair of brightly-colored pajamas was seen darting into the tunnel. It was none other than Jerry Railey with a copy of the latest Esquire clutched tightly to his busom. Well, the signs did say to grab your valuables, didn't they, Jerry '? Such as this could go on forever, 'cause it has been a grand year. Adios for another year. AS EVIDENCE OF THE HIGH STANDARDS OF SCHOLARSHIP MAINTAINED AT TEXAS WES- LEYAN, WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING SUMMARY OF WHAT WE LEARNED IN CLASSES!!! English: Mrs. Lisenby informed us that Milton was a blind poet who wrote Paradise Lost: when his wife died he wrote Paradise Regained! Mr. Hughes said that the remarkable thing about Browning is that he wrote Poetry and Short Stories, and sometimes even wrote Literature. Mr. Leach noticed the frequent use of Shakespeare for quoting and suggests that he be given a tubular grave to make turning over easier for him. In Speech: Miss Beckett wants her students to be as capable as European diplomats. She recalls those who presented the claims of small nations at the Versailles Peace Conference: Dmoski presented Poland's claims, beginning with the 14th Century at 11:00 o'clock in the morning, and reached 1919 at 4:00 P. M.: next day Benes presented the claims of the Czechs, and he began a century earlier and finished an hour later. Romance Languages: Mr. Hughes stresses the fact that Je vous aime means I love you, in French. Nice, if the girl friend knows French. Miss Cowan's Spanish class has discovered that Si Si Senor means it's a good deal, in Spanish. Congratulations ..lIl1l, Slll'l'l'XS, Graduates! Good Luck for the Future! Mathematics: Mr. Matthis says the mathematical chances of getting a TW jacket like his are very slim. It seems he functions as star Drawback. Science: Mr. Ewing teaches his students that the scientific method is the shortest distance between two points: the only trouble is that it takes twice as much time. Miss Balthrop says that Biology is the most fasci- nating of sciences. Lots of queer speciments hang around her office as living proof. Social Sciences: Mr. Stuart revealed to his Eco- nomics classes that he has solved all the problems between capital and labor. I'll take all the capitalf' he says, and you can all labor. Dean Glick looketl into the future history of the world for the special benefit of his history classesg he prophesies the follow- ing world-shaking occurrances for next year: 1. Religious Education: Miss Smith advised, when in doubt, tell a story. She practices what she preaches, too. Education: Mr. Bowman disclosed the fact that Fenelon was the first man to see possibilities in coedu- cation: I. Q.! Have you heard of the young matron who bought enough flowered chintz to cover her sofa and herself too? Then there is the one about the woman who bought enough cretonne for draperies and a dirndle skirt.
