We live encircled by the university. For a few brief years it is our home, our work and our play. Yet, seldom do we pause for any period of time to determine the nature of the element in which we exist. Within the university ' s walls, with what do we see? Is the light of knowledge that of a golden, unclouded sun? Or do we see through the dim glow in the shadowed void of Plato ' s cave? No one can really know which exists as our reality. Are we figures or shadows? If we are shadows, will we ever leave unfettered to learn of an en- lightened world? We of the university cannot We forgot that the university is a closed circle, a retreat isolated from the many other worlds. No, to limit its scope is not to denote failure; to- tal comprehension is impossible. The university is an interlude ... a space in which to move from ignorance to knowledge, from childhood to maturity, from darkness to light. It is a space of many images and many reali- ties, but no absolutes. To mirror the university ' s reflection is to refract turmoil and passivity, im- portance and frivolity. To glance at these images of the institution we have known, is to restruc- ture our realities and our fantasies ... to return to that circle each of us must eventually leave . too soon and too late.
