ARTS AND SCIENCES conservation, sanitation, or other governmental services, those from other divisions or departments wishing biology courses as a background, and prospective teachers of science courses in high school, or health and hygiene in the grades. DEPARTINIENT OF C H E KI I S T R Y AND CHEIVIICAL ENGINEERING, supervised by Dr. R. C. Goodwin, offers curricula leading to three degrees, Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering is awarded upon the completion of the requirements outlined by the Division of Engineering, also the degree of Bachelor of Arts or of Bachelor of Science, Chemistry liajor. Stu- dents get a diversified view of the field of chemistry or a well-rounded view of the physical sciences, depending on which degree they wish to receive. DEPARTIIENT OF EDUCATION AND PSY- CHOLOGY, headed by R. E. Garlin, furnishes the pro- fessional preparation in education and psychology neces- sary for the education of teachers, supervisors, and school administrators. Its primary function is to furnish the professional preparation in methods, preparation of ma- terials, classroom management, the fundamentals of ad- ministration and supervision and other professional Page 29 courses necessary for the adequate preparation of teachers. ENGLISH DEPARTIWENT, under the head of Dr. W. B. Gates, offers required freshman composition courses along with other courses in American Literature, Nlajor English Writers, Technical VVriting, Chaucer, History, Prose, Poetry, etc. DEPARTMENT OF F headed by Dr. C. B. Qualia, offers instruction in German, OREIGN LANGUAGES, French, Latin, and Spanish. Courses leading to the de- gree of IXIaster of Arts are offered in Spanish. DE PARTIVIENT OF GEOLOGY AND PETRO- LEIIKI ENGINEERING, headed by Dr. L. T. Patton, offers advanced work devoted to preparation for work in the petroleum industry, although the training is suffi- ciently broad and fundamental to serve for other geologi- cal professions such as state and federal surveys and other similar work. DICPARTINIENT OF GOVERNIXIENT, headed by Dr. VVm. Davis, aims to train and prepare men and women for responsible citizenship, intelligent voting, effi- cient public service, leadership in public affairs, the hold- ing of public office, and the organization of public opinion.

Mills, Donald Murphy. DEAN R. C. Gooowix DIVISIGN CDF The Division of Arts and Sciences has two important functions in Texas Technological College. First, it offers degree courses in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Education and Psychology, English, Foreign Languages, Geology, Government, History, Journalism, Klathematics, lllusic, Philosophy, Physical and Health Education, Physics, Sociology, and Speech. Second, the Division serves as a subject matter division for all divisions of the institution. No matter what cur- riculum a student may select, he takes some of the funda- mental subjects such as English, mathematics, history, physics, foreign languages, speech, and journalism as foundation courses. In addition to the curricula leading regularly to a degree, certain pre-professional curricula are offered, such as pre-law and pre-medical training. DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY, headed by R. A. Studhalter, offers courses to students working toward the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Arts Degree and for those classified as pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-phar- macy, or pre-clinical technicians or nurses. Dr. Blitz having troubles in his freshman music class. DEPARTIXIFNT OF HISTORY AND AN- THROPOLOGY, supervised by Dr. VV. C. Holden, offers courses designed to give a knowledge of the cul- tural aspirations of the past and of man's efforts to care for the material needs of society through certain economic structures and changing political organizations. The origin and development of present-day institutions receive major consideration. JOURNALISKI DEPARTINIFNT, headed by Cecil Horne, is designed to give a thorough training in the technique of journalistic writing and editing, a knowledge of the development of American journalism, and an under- standing of those principles which underlie the most ap- proved journalistic practices. One year's experience in reporting is required of all journalism graduates. hluch practice in news gatherings, writing, and editing is given. DEPARTKHCNT OF RIATHENIATICS AND ASTRONOIXIY, headed by J. N. liichie, provides es- sential training in the service science which underlies all technological progress and at the same time fosters habits of logical thinking which are basic to a well-rounded edu- DIVISION GF cation. In this field the student is confronted challeng- ingly with the problem of drawing exact and undebatable conclusions from given premises by use of sound thinking alone. The successful student of mathematics gains more than technical proficiency leading to opportunities in edu- cation, business, and industry. He gains also in the char- acter elements of confidence and self-reliance. The courses in astronomy are designed to impress upon the student a life-long realization of the vastness and majestic ordcrliness of the universe around him. DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC, headed by Dr. Julien Paul Blitz, offers a music major toward the Bachelor of Arts Degree and major in Public School ilfusic and in Band hlusic for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education. The department does not offer majors in voice and instrumental music but grants diplomas to those students who have accomplished the courses with distinc- tion. The Tech band, under the direction of D. O. VViley, plays at many athletic events as well as gives numerous concerts during the year.
