Awards The 1984 Awards Convocation was held in the University Center Theater. Selected by students for basic sciences faculty awards were Roger Markwald, Ph.D., Sue Gunasegaram, M.D., and David Potter, Ph.D. Clinical science awards to full-time faculty went to Peter Canizaro, M.D., and Paul Meyer, M.D. for Lubbock; J. Rush Pierce, M.D., Amarillo, and William R. Gaddis, M.D., El Paso. Also selected for clinical sciences awards were O. Lynn Avant, M.D., Robert J. Hays, M.D., Dorothy Ekery, M.D., David Eisner, M.D., and Mark Wegleitner, M.D. Mel). Crozier, Director of the Office of Student Financial Aid, was awarded the Administrative Excellence Award. Staff Excellence Awards went to Jane Carter, Jan Bolmer, and Olga Ortega. Senior students selected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society were: E. Joan Hardaway, Philip N. Henderson, James A. Manning, Jr., Robert L. Pinkston, Jr., Richard A. Rosen, Laura L. Sears, and Randy L. Stewart. Students selected to Alpha Omega Alpha during their junior year in- | cluded: Nanette L. Burger, William G. Coleman, Sheila J. Goodnight, David L. Lindzey, Stephen M. Manning, Lisa D. Santos, John E. Streit and Michael A. White. Receiving the Lange Publications Award for Excellent Performance in Medical School were: Philip Miehl, Noble Rainwater, James Earhart, Paul Munden, James Behra, and Dana Mann. Merck Manual Awards went to Lee Matthew Jones and Leo Altenberg. The Upjohn Achievement in Medicine Award went to Lex Brown. John Streit, David Barrett and Leo Conger received the Mosby Scholarship Book Awards for Scholastic Excellence. The American Medical Women’s Association Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Achievement Citations were awarded to Sheila Goodnight, Lisa Santos, and Nanette Burger. Lange Publications Awards for Excellent Performance in Medical School went to Yolanda Cowley Brady and Jeffrey Bishop. William Gaicen received the Dean’s Award for Highest Academic Achievement. Aurora Pajeau was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Joe Gonzales of Lubbock received an award as Outstanding Senior Student in Family Medicine and was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. | Departmental Awards were given to: Nelson Ploch, Anatomy; Terre Wilson, Dermatology; Bradly Bundrant, Biochemistry; Michael Nussbaum, Microbiology; David Coats and Mark Sanderson, Neuroscience; William Coleman, Pathology; Blake Avera, Pharmacology; David Coats, Physiol- ogy; Michael McCredie, Anesthesiology; Steve Manning and Terri Rock, Family Medicine; David Lindzey, Internal Medicine; Charles Risinger, Obstetrics and Gynecology; Gordon Schultze, Michael White and Randy Stewart, Pediatrics; Carl Utterback, Psychiatry; and James Craig Barnett, Surgery. The Gold-Headed Cane Award, symbolizing the art of medicine was presented to David L. Lindzey. Nursing Awards were presented to Robert Martinez for Excellence in Clinical Performance, Belinda Brice for Human Potential, Jan Rose for Outstanding Service to the School of Nursing, Jo Ronda Northcutt for Excellence in the Practice of Community Health, and Ruan Richardson for Ex- cellence in Writing. 31
