The 1983 awards ceremony honored special achievements of numerous HSC students: (Above) A few of the new members of Alpha Omega Alpha: Fred Bishop, Johnny Bowen, Richard Briggs, Randall Frost, David Haymes, Bridget Heinen, Kevin McLeod, Robert Mills, Francis Mueller, Thomas Raetzsch, Wat- son Roye, Harry Wadsworth. (Middle) The Gold-Headed Cane Award, symbol- izing the art of medicine, was presented to Fred Bishop. (Bottom) The Award of Excellence in Nursing Practice was presented to Mary McCarthy Slater. Other awards included basic science faculty awards to Sue Gunasegaram, M.D., Carter M. Alexander, M.D., and Roger R. Markwald, Ph.D as well as clinical science awards to Peter C. Canizaro, M.D., Samuel F. Romero, M.D., Rolf Habersang, M.D., O. Lynn Avant, M.D., Joe N. Kidd, M.D., and Robert S. Urban, M.D. Mel Crozier was awarded the administrative excellence award, and staff excellence awards went to Jane Carter and Olga Ortega. The William W. Frye Award was presented to William H. Gordon, M.D., professor of family and internal medicine. The achievement award in anatomy went to Paul M. Munden. Dermatology awards went to Andrew Davis and Timothy Cornitius, earned in pharmacology and microbiology, respectively. Neuroscience awards went to Blake Avera, James Earhart, and Maria Johnson. Avera also received the award in physiol- ogy. Rebecca MacGregor received the CIBA award for community service. Judy Smith received the award in anesthesiology, and Marla Neiman and Marc Wimpee were named outstanding students in family medicine. John Morris, Johnny Bowen, and Mark Godat received the awards in Ob Gyn. David Haymes and Francis Mueller received the pathology awards. Pat Brown re- ceived the West Texas Children’s Foundation Award in Pediatrics. Michael Strickland received the Sandoz Award for psychiatry. Bridget Heinen received the Robert J. Salem Award in surgery. Fred Bishop was named outstanding student in internal medicine and recieved the Dean’s Award for highest aca- demic achievement. Randy Frost received the Upjohn award in medicine. Cheryl Mueller and Larry Baros received the Merck Manual Awards. Robert Mills, Kevin Browne and Michael Whetstone received the Mosby Scholarship Book Awards for scholastic excellence. Awards — 7
