Carl Spain Mont and Patsy Whitson BIBLE CHAIR DIRECTORS In September 1947, Carl Spain came to Lubbock to be the first director of the Bible Chair. He had formerly been a professor of Bible at Harding College. Through his efforts a firm beginning was established for the work at the Chair. In December 1951, Brother Spain resigned from his work at Lubbock. Mont Whitson, who had just completed his work for a Master's Degree in Church History at Butler University, was selected to succeed Brother Spain. Mont's leadership was a great influence in guiding the Chair to its present posi- tion. In May 1956, Mont moved to work with the College church at A. 8: M. Goebel Music, who had just re- ceived his M. A. degree from Abilene Christian College, was selected to take the directorship. Although there have been three directors, the Christian Architect is mainly concerned with the work of the Chair as it has been directed by Goebel in this, his first year in Lubbock.

Dear Christian Friends, Your lives have been an influence that can never be replaced nor rubbed out. You have not only in- fluenced the students at Tech, but you, by your life that you have lived while here in school, have paid dividends on the support that thousands of people have given to the Tech Bible Chair. May we quote a saying from H. Beecher to describe the influence that you exert. The blossom cannot tell what becomes of its odor, and no man can tell what becomes of his influence and example, that roll away from him, and go beyond his ken on their perilous mission. May I urge you to let the Bible Chair be your Home Away From Home. Never let the clouds of sin keep out the light of God, but always be an example in word, in manner of life, in love, in faith, and in purity, If we miss seeing you again on this side of the vale, may we see each other on the upper and better side some day. Sincerely a Friend, 7 3 Goebel Music

I2 uhle Tlnaw Developwxevn' In June 1949, the Broadway Bulletin' a.nnounced: The church has rented space foralarge classroom and study within a half block of the entrance to the campus, at 2406 Broadway. This is where Carl Spain began the organized Bible Chair work. During the school year of 1947-48 a total number of 564 students were enrolled at Tech who listed the church of Christ as their preference, and of this number some 110 enrolled in the ten courses of Bible offered. k In the fall of 1951, the Chair was moved back to 2406 Broadway, with the entire building, instead of only one room, at its disposal. Mont Whitson was the director in the new location. In September 1949, the Chair was moved to 2416 Main, where it remained for two years.
